Ian Poulter Flips Off the Crowd at TPC Scottsdale 16th, Responds on Twitter

Ian Poulter stuck it close at the par 3 16th at TPC Scottsdale.  With about seven feet for birdie, Poulter pushed his birdie try to the right.  Naturally, the crowd booed and some "USA!" chants erupted.  After Poulter holed out, he clapped to the crowd, then gave them a salute.

Not that I wouldn't do the same thing. I mean, I probably do that a few times per round - to the golf ball, to my playing partners, at my reflection in the water.

Poulter addressed the issue tonight on his Twitter account.

This isn't the first time that Poulter has been connected to some bird flipping.  In August, Poulter tweeted a picture of Justin Rose and Camilo Villegas flipping the bird in the skies.

What? They wanted a birdie.

I think he executed the birdie in fine fashion.

That was hilarious. Poulter had been having a blast with the crowds on 16 all week. That looked more like the bird flipped among friends after a little razzing.

Yeah, it wasn’t an angry bird flip at all.

I thought that was pretty funny, too. Come on TX – we’ve all said that same thing with a wry smile. :-)

Poulter was on my “crap” list because of the way he talked down to me trying to get an interview for local radio while playing here in Atlanta – but the last two weeks have changed my mind.

hmmm

Looked to me like he was flipping of the people at the Golf Channel. Can’t say as if I blame him. Was a good tournament overall and the charities did well as usual. What the heck happened to Sneds yesterday, gee wiz man 2 doubles and 4 bogeys after 3 rounds in the 60’s YIKES.

As Alan Shipnuck said to me, Sneds is fragile.

Winning is special...and tough

That tells you how much pressure there is on that level and not everybody can handle it all the time…which is what makes the guys like Mickelson, Stricker, Singh, and a small handful of guys who win every year very special – and guys like Tiger legendary.

Thought I might be right about picking Ricky Fowler

But the par 5 that he laid up on cost him. It wasn’t the layup that killed his chances so much as the poor 3rd shot.

Yeah, he made his choice but didn’t execute. If he had, we all would’ve called him gutsy like we did David Toms in ’00 at AAC.

I was thinking of Zach Johnson at Augusta the year he won, but your point carries.

by Charles Boyer on Mar 1, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Also just as good, though Johnson did it every time on the par 5s (which actually makes it more incredible)

not the putt at 16 ? Not the bad tee shots at 17 and 18 ?

he screwed up the layup. instead of hitting to 100, he hit to 83 yards which is in between clubs

Good point, but still that layup was a classic accident chain of events: one bad thing led to another. A missed putt could be the result of a poor shot, but really the layup sticks into my mind a little higher. YMMV.
