Natalie Gulbis Is a Dangerous Woman

Natalie Gulbis is a lovely woman and is said to be one of the nicest of the LPGA Tour.  From the handful of times she has responded to me on Twitter, I've felt the warmth of all 140 characters.  Charles Schultz said that happiness is a warm puppy.  He was an idiot.  It's receiving a Tweet from Natalie.

But Gulbis has a dark side.

She clearly is a sadist when it comes to her caddies.  This morning - well, east coast time - Natalie shared this photo of her at the HSBC Women's Champions.

Clearly missing a tee, she demanded that her caddy Greg act as her tee.  Natalie, it's only 269 yards!  Just lay up with an iron!  Or was Laura Davies not around to share how make a tee out of a small mound of dirt?

Good Lord, with the amount of orthodontic work that I've had to get this winning smile of mine, I would never risk it by having someone hit a golf ball less than 3 inches from it.  Even at a gentleman's club, snatching stuff out of my mouth is out of the question.

I digress, though.

This isn't the first time that Gulbis has engaged in workplace violence, as this video shows:

Note to self: it's always the pretty ones that are the most dangerous.  (Of course, we kid.  If that crazy NASA astronaut stalker lady is any example, the crazy ones are exactly the people you think they are.  And Natalie's great.)

I suppose new pictures of Natalie are always welcome

but it’s time she stepped up to the plate more. To be more famous for looks rather than her game makes for a very short career.

That’s the kind of danger a guy could get used to… :-)

Eas – that is true for most people, but Gulbis has made a hundred times more money off the course than she has on. I know she WANTS to win, but as long as she keeps her face in more or less relevant position on the leaderboard, she’ll keep the sponsors happy and her retirement account will continue to grow.

now wait just a darned minute...

When someone suggested the same thing about DLIII last week, you went ballistic. So, which is it?

what are you talking about ? someone suggested that DLIII could make more money as a model ? he wanted to use his caddy as a tee holder ?

how quickly we forget

You took exception when it was suggested that DLIII and others could maintain lavish lifestyles by finishing in the top 20, that they didn’t need to win. You just said it’s OK if Gulbis doesn’t need to win to maintain her lifestyle. Did you change your mind? The top 20 retirement plan is all good with you now?

I did no such thing. The argument was their drive to win. DLIII was a bad example because he has 20 Tour wins.

Check the numbers – DLIII aside (pick a better example) – finishing with a career full of top 20’s on the PGA Tour isn’t the same neighborhood as the same career on the LPGA tour.

Couldn't agree more court

If it is only money she wants, she is doing very well. Somestimes I get the impression a photo shoot is more important than practise, but it’s the times we live in.

To quote the great philosopher and criminal target shooter, “Dirty” Harry Callahan in “Magnum Force”, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” :-)

Gulbis didn’t have the game to beat Sorenstam or Park or Pak or Webb or the big names when she started out as a pro before her back went out…and doesn’t have the game to beat Ochoa or Creamer or Shin these days. She wasn’t going to really cash in with a career full of 10-30th place finishes and the occassional top 10 – and very few of those great champions were going to cash in as a model.

A GC show on Gulbis this morning said she's already made

$3 mil or $4 mil (I forget which). That’s enough to keep her in short skirts till her legs decide otherwise.

wasn’t that $3-4 million in LPGA Tour winnings ?

Agreed...and her back is a big setback.

But as a golfer, she should be judged as such. If the sexy side that seems to be a criteria to sell ladies golf, is 90% of that criteria, how can one take the game seriously ?

by Easingwold on Feb 26, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

well there you have it – as good as the women are, they will never be seen as being on the same level as the men. There are so many weekend golfers who hit their tee shots as far or farther than most of the women pros that the men don’t watch to learn even though the women play their courses in the 60’s and 70’s. Most of their courses are between 6000 and 6500 yards, which is seen as extremely short with very wide fairways, medium paced greens and hole positions mostly in the middle of the greens. Many of the women wear clothes that look like what you see at the local muni – not the “professional” look of the PGA Tour guys.

basically, the deck is stacked against the women EXCEPT in the “sex sells” arena – which is a real shame

A typical club man-woman ratio here is about 5 to 1

so I suppose women who play golf, such as Wendy who take it seriously, watch womens golf and on that basis the audience will always be smaller. I agree with you, it is a shame, because women pros play fine golf.

I’m having a vision…Royal Easingwold Golf Club…with a 5 to 1 ratio…women to men :-)

Ladies day is Tuesday

and it’s a great view from the clubhouse :)

Sarah Lynn Sargent, a marginal LPGA Tour player who spent a lot of time on the Futures Tour, would always make jokes about her male pro-am partners who thought they could out drive her.

is that one of the ladies you caddied for at the Futures Tour event up there ?

I played the Futures Tour pro-am and we all outdrove the player. Caddied for two pro-ams at the LPGA stop here in Atlanta – to the best of my memory, 3 of 4 outdrove my first player. The second one, only 2 could occassionally out hit the pro….Laura Davies..WOW is she long !

I don’t have that problem. I’m about 40 yards shorter than the shortest Tour player.

Yeah, I had Sarah in my group a couple of years ago. She also appeared on Big Break VI, but she got kicked off the island about 3/4 of the way through. I was crushed.

The caddie could've simply asked Natalie

whether she was wearing a skirt or a skort.

by TXQ on Feb 26, 2010 10:56 AM EST reply actions

TX,

from his position, I bet he could tell….Easing…I kind of equate her with the guys, who make great money every year, but don’t win…Bobby Watkins comes to mind…At least, she is way better to look at…You can see that she is grinding out there, but there is always at least one round that does her in….and are her back problems over?…STUB

Shes had a bad back

I’ll judge her golf after this year.
