Chug Every Time Someone Makes A Par TPC Scottsdale's 16th
TPC Scottsdale's 16th is a sea of drunken, sweaty humanity. It's a golf mecca that the players on Tour experience just once per year. Thousands upon thousands of beer swiling people with cheer sheets, ready to explode when a great shot happens. The interesting thing is that there really is not that much to cheer about in terms of scoring at the famous par 3.
Since 2003, PGA Tour players have little better than a 1 in 5 chance to make birdie on the hole. After 2004, that percentage drops into the teens. As the number of seats and skyboxes has increased, the scoring has remained fairly static. With the hole fully enclosed now with seating and maybe more skyboxes on the way, it will be curious to see how players fare with the extra people.
After devouring the ShotLink stats around 16 at TPC Scottsdale, it only seemed appropriate to compare the play there to the other famous stadium par three on Tour: the island green 17th at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course.
As you can see (and would expect), scoring is more difficult at the island green. Every 7th player makes a birdie there. But, there are also way more bogeys and dreaded "others" than TPC Scottsdale's 16th.
In fact, in the last 28 rounds contested at the Stadium Course, only five of those rounds saw the 17th have an average score under par. Three of those rounds were in a stretch from the final round in '04 through the second round in '05.

Good stuff RB – but when you say there isn’t a lot of scoring to cheer, you’re forgetting that they cheer good tee shots regardless of the final score…and they have almost as much fun heckling a missed green. A good buzz doesn’t discriminate. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
And anyone who doesn't cheer or heckle gets
thrown under the buzz.
Aloha!
This is a beautiful place….lots of water…lol. We played yesterday and had a great time. I had a little trouble with the greens…..lots of grain. Shot 79 with three 3 putts and an OB, so it wasn’t too bad. A lot of fun. Everyone here is talking about the Saints….it’s amazing how excited they get when we tell them we are from Louisiana……we are Who Dat celebrities……lol

Having a great time. Lots and Lots of pictures. Mating season for the Humpback Whales….they are everywhere. They are magnificent…..and we don’t get tired of watching for them. We still haven’t seen one come up completely out of the water yet, but we are still hoping. My fantasy team did poorly yesterday, but I’m hoping for a comeback today.

I forgot to mention we played the Emerald Course at Wailea, about 6500 yards with incredible views…..I could get used to this. Jumpn….made my picks, but didn’t have a very good day today….hopefully tomorrow is better. Hope you’re enjoying the tourney.

I'll do what I can Red.
Busy day yesterday and was told over 135 thousand in attendance. Suppose to get real hectic here this weekend as it usualy does. I am working so not much time to see much of the golf “on-course” accept for the the 18th. Saturday, I’ll be on the course for the day. Last night I spent some time with Davis Love, Chris Stroud, Billy Mayfair and David Toms. David is a very very classy guy and it was the first time I have met him. Billy Mayfair had me in stiches as usual as he is quite the jokester. Villegas is looking good with his 62 yesterday. Glad I picked him in my fantasy team this week. I’ll try to report some things as I see them , but again I’m working today and Sunday.

Toms is from my area. He has played at my club several times. Everyone here is a big supporter of him and Hal Sutton. Sutton is a member of my club. Have a great day Saturday, watching the action.
