Amanda Blumenherst: 3 Tournaments, 1 Counts Before the 1st Major

Duke standout Amanda Blumenherst is in an awkward position to kick off her LPGA Tour rookie season.

The good news is that she was given exemptions into the limited-field events in Asia that start the year.

The bad news is that the money from those events will not count toward the money list since players exempted into limited-field, no cut events don't have their winnings count toward the money list.

As Beth Ann Baldry points out, that leaves Blumenherst and her fellow players not participating in Asia just one chance to get into the top 30 on the money list to qualify for the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Hey ROOK !

Tough bananas.

RB – what does this have to do with anything ? Blumenherst is a tour rookie. She had an outstanding amateur career, but that means absolutely zilch as a professional…unless your name is Wie, of course… Tours protect the veterans – that’s the way the game is played.

She’s going to make a good check in a tournament she really hasn’t earned her way into. If she plays well in the first three tournaments, don’t be surprised to see her in the Kraft Nabisco anyway.

(still – unless you’re a tour veteran – that’s a silly rule – either don’t allow the exemptions into these tournaments, or allow the cash on the money list if someone thinks you’re supposed to be in the field)

Court, I've heard of tough cookies,

tough toenails, etc., but you’re really going out on a limb with bananas.

I just think it’s bizarre that any player – not just Amanda – that didn’t get into the Asian events by qualifying has exactly one event to qualify for the KNC.

Understood, Ryan, but I think that's

off-topic from my bananas comment.

Now you’re arguing with the schedule. The majors are planned years in advance. The holes in the schedule couldn’t be helped – it is what it is. I understand your thought – and it would be nice for ALL the players not already in the K/N to have more opportunities…but you’re arguing with a wall.

don't worry about Amanda

Ji-Yai Shin got into one of last year’s early-season Asian swing events on a sponsor exemption and the money she won from her top 10 (or was it better?) finish wasn’t counted toward her single-season total. She still ended up #1 on the money list. Bottom line 1: if Amanda’s got the game, she’ll get into the KNC under any qualifying system. Bottom line 2: the LPGA needs more full-field domestic events before the KNC and needs to open up the Asian swing by getting as many full-field events in it as possible.

The event in question

Was Shin’s T13th in Thailand that wasn’t counted. Do POY points count from these events?

I do believe so.

I agree, she is a rookie,

and won’t have the same privileges as the older players….It’s always been that way…why should anything change now…are we going to change on a yearly, quarterly, semi-annual or what ever basis….leave well enough alone, the LPGA has enough to worry about…all is not strawberries and cream just yet…STUB

seriously ? Wimbledon is famous for serving strawberries and cream. YUM !! Back in 1980, I drove back home early from a family vacation to watch the Borg v McEnroe final because nobody else wanted to watch it. Fresh strawberries and cream for breakfast…and the greatest final in history.

I was a huge Borg fan. Only time I ever

rooted for a guy who didn’t have much of a personality. Sure was easy to root against obnoxious Mac. How his parents were able to attend his matches was perplexing.

remember the description of Borg in the media ?

“he says less with fewer words than anybody in history.” always cracked me up. the guy might not have been a quote machine, but he shone where it mattered – on the court. (wait – where have I heard that argument being made ?…it seemed so recent, too…) (lol)

psst – Mac’s parents are were New Yorkers, too

Connors was always my favorate

and with Borg and McEnroe there at the same time, tennis was never dull.
