Introducing Trailing Tiger: A Blog Devoted Only to Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is most recognized athlete in the world.  He is - by far - the best golfer in the world.  It has been argued that Woods is bigger than golf.  At times, that has proven to be the case.  Despite what you may think of Woods, the emphasis placed on his every move (pre- and post-hydrant), SB Nation has created a blog dedicated to Tiger Woods.  It's called Trailing Tiger and it premieres today.

Today's reading by Woods of a prepared statement and the kind of attention that it drew definitely served as strong evidence for this site's existence.  The Golf Channel backed up its coverage of the season-opening event on the LPGA Tour to broadcast this.  ESPN plastered their programming with coverage of a prepared statement in a way that they typically on reserve for Brett Favre.  The major networks covered it, and I'm sure The Price is Right fans were mad to have their Drew Carey fix preempted for a contrived apology.

The idea for this blog brewed long before Woods' car accident, revelations of infidelity, and the birth of TMZ Sports.  Dan Shanoff planted the seed of this site with his creation of a blog devoted specifically to now-gone Florida QB Tim Tebow.  The notion of a blog devoted to a single athlete drew praise and criticism, but it created for a lot of discussion about how sports and athletes are to be covered.

There have long been complaints from golf fans that the media focuses too much on a single player.  Trailing Tiger will be no different, embracing the bemoaning from the masses and will make no apologies for its emphasis.

The reasoning is simple: Tiger Woods is a transformative athlete whose career has changed the sport of golf on a global scale.  After a decade and a half of his professional career, Woods is now on the decline.  He is in the second half of his career and it is very likely that his production will slip in coming years.  From a historical perspective, it is important to earnestly chronicle the kind of professional, social, and corporate impact that the remainder of Woods' career has.

Doing so without pulling punches can serve as a time capsule of these years of Woods' career.  Yes, TMZ will get some play.  But mostly the site will delve into Woods' on-course behavior and performance - provided his return to golf, which has not yet been announced.

For those of you that are sick of Tiger news, you'll know what site to avoid.  The SB Nation golf portfoli isn't changing.  Waggle Room will continue to serve as the hub for all things golf.  We will continue to provide two LPGA-specific offerings that are the best at what they cover.

As for those of you whose curiosity is piqued, stick with us.  Woods' career is inherently interesting and we hope that Trailing Tiger will serve as a living history of what is unfolding before our eyes.

ahhhh Ryan ?

How is this blog any different from his website www.tigerwoods.com blog. Except for the fact that they shut down that blog months ago because ALL the commenters were no longer all warm and fuzzy bandwagoners.

it's an open blog

No warm and fuzzy only bloggers here. It’s give and take. I agree with Ryan here. He can let this just run on it’s own. He can get back to talking about other GOLF stories. True golf fans should be happy about this. Good move Ryan.

That’s part of this. Waggle Room is a golf blog – all things golf. Doesn’t need to be dominated by a single player.

True Ryan

I for one enjoy the variety here and visiting other blogs links from this site as well, though this is the only one I have time to comment at. Keep up the good work.

how melo-freaking-dramatic can you get?

There was a time when I loved watching Woods hit golf balls. The pure artistry he exhibited when extricating himself from the result of an errant drive was worth the time and effort to watch. No longer.

GWAA showed a spark of independence in the last day. When Woods inevitably returns to the PGA Tour will that independent spark continue? If you think so, I’ve got bridge to sell you.

I don’t think that this spirit will hold, but I’m really cynical in general about change.

I’m still going to think/report Tiger in the same way as I did before the wreck. I think he’s a hell of an athlete with a lot of flaws and both of those realities should be explored.

I'm taking route em66 too, blogwise.

Before the scandal began, I was an avid Tiger fan, eager to watch him break Jack’s majors record. Now I’d MUCH RATHER see a classy guy like Jack keep his record.

When Kerry Packer was the man behind the Australian Open back in the 80’s, there “allegedly”, were some things that went on that none of the aforementioned gentlemen, would like made public. I say allegedly, because I don’t know for a fact if any of the stories are true. Glass houses and all that stuff.

By the way

Stevie Williams was noticeably absent from the scripted reading today as well. I called down to the club and was told that there were no sightings of him at all. ( it doesn’t mean he wasn’t there) , but it seems more than likely that he wasn’t from what I hear. I thought they were BEST FRIENDS ? No show of support in the room from stevie,, gee wiz man. I wonder if he will loop for someone else in the interum. who knows.

question to whom ever has an answer ?

Tiger said, " I would like to thank my friends at Accenture and the players in the field this week for understanding why I’m making these remarks today. And why was it today ? is my question.

In addition to that, he never once mentioned that he loved Elin. I guess the writers of the statement forgot that part.

Noticeably missing was his wedding ring as well.

Well, I found someone that I dislike more than Tiger….this porn star, represented by Gloria Allred on FOXnews now, is demanding an apology from Tiger. WTF is wrong with this world? Porn stars who abort their own babies and voluntarily come out with their stories in order to get their 15 mins of fame are now demanding apologies?

Elin may have asked Tiger to keep her name out of this

Tiger got himself into this mess, Tiger can get out without using a nationally broadcasted love letter to his wife as a crutch.

by TwoNuse on Feb 19, 2010 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

If she did, then Tiger ignored her….he made a big point about Elin not assaulting him on TG, which is a lie but it can’t be proven so he feels like he can lie about it with impunity. And you are free to believe him if you like but like the Who said…“I won’t be duped again”

There may be a few people

Elin would like to have excluded in future – like those who knew, connived and assisted in his philandering. That’s one of those nasty questions I would pose in Elin’s place and I would want them well away from him in future.

so she appears to be giving him a second chance, and I doubt he’d be going back to rehab. if it was all over. The wedding rings may be “on probation” for the time being.

Wendy, just for you...

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/02/exclusive-tiger-woods-wife-wont-commit-staying-married

“RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively that Elin and Tiger are still living in separate homes but had dinner this week two nights in a row. Elin still is not wearing her wedding ring and has not decided if she will stay in the marriage.
And while she has not spoken publicly about Tiger’s cheating, her absence at his press event Friday seemed to say quite a bit.”

call me Forrest...

…he said what he had to say and got out of the room…more or less. I was a little surprised at the “funeral home” setting – and the pace of the reading was pretty slow…but this is not a guy who makes a living giving speeches – especially speeches like this.

He told us what was on his mind – that’s all we can ask – the media be damned. (and he was pretty clear on that point, too)
He doesn’t owe anyone any answers about the women or his family – good for him.

He didn’t interrupt coverage of the Accenture at the risk of giving the media an entire afternoon to pick him apart…which they are hard at word doing as we write.

Could’ve done without the hug line at the end…it seemed pretty pretentious…thought it was pretty funny that Finchem didn’t get up.

This was good enough for me – and I hope he gets things straightened out.

And that’s all I have to say about that…over and out

While you waz away, Lots has happened.

The Saints won the Super Bowl.
Tiger admitted his transgressions.
Stub invented a BBQ Sauce.
3irons is now President of the TW Fan Club.
Inga and Cellinni no longer work at TGC.
I sold my business and now reside in FiJi and sell purple fedoras to the tourist.

And a new golf ball was invented that goes 462 yards and washes itself.

if you don’t mind a recommendation – take the ferry from Maui to Lana’i. There are 2 resorts with 2 really great golf courses – the non-golfers can have fun in Lana’i City or see some cool glyphs, or hang out on Manele Bay and watch dolphins and whales. The Koele course up on the mountain is gorgeous and the Manele Bay course is a Nicklaus design with all kinds of tough holes. The Ferry ride alone is a lot of fun.
