AP: Tiger Woods to Return to Therapy Following Friday Annoucement

The Associated Press has obtained a letter from PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem to the PGA Tour policy board that says Woods will return to therapy following his announcement on Friday morning.

The announcement coincides with a break in Woods' therapy that would allow him to read his statement, spend some time with his children, and then return to therapy.

Tim Finchem made mention of Woods' continuing rehab in remarks on Wednesday at Dove Mountain and the Accenture Match Play.

"[M]y sense is that this is part of his schedule and what he's dealing with and going through, but I don't know that,
 Finchem said.

Later he added, "I don't know what he's going to do after he finishes his rehab, you know, I think all of that is TBD."

The letter seemingly explains why Woods' agent Mark Steinberg indicated that this announcement could not wait.

well isn’t THIS interesting ? He’s not trying to overshadow anything, and he’s not ready to play, and he’s not ready to put up with the media’s nonsense just yet.

any bets that the question in the media tent on Friday will be “so, have you changed your stand on what Tiger did today ?” I hope at least one guy will say, “yes, I jumped to a conclusion because I let myself be swayed by you leaches in the media who only wanted to get me to say something on a subject I really didn’t understand. It looks like the man is taking his rehab more seriously than I gave him credit for, and I hope it helps.”

It will be interesting.

Speaking Out ?

None of them voluntarily spoke out at all. They had microphones shoved in their faces and were asked loaded questions. It’s not liked they chased after Jim Grey ( who looks silly in a golf hat ) down and said please interview me so I can tell the world my negative thoughts about tiger. sheeesh Jim Grey askes a lot of rediculous questions after boxing matches as well. I’m surprised he hasn’t received a beat down by now. LOL

voluntary because they are not required by the Tour to do those stand-up interviews after a round

What are you on about?

They do the interviews to be asked about their rounds. They get asked a couple of questions on this and then comes the inevitable ? which was all the interviewer really wanted to ask.

that’s what I thought – but I don’t understand your problem with what I said. pro said that none of them “voluntarily spoke out”. I just pointed out that the standup interviews ARE voluntary – they don’t have to talk to Jim Gray or anybody else with a microphone in their hand – regardless of the question…and they don’t have to answer any question asked.

I thought you were being pedantic

by WendyUK on Feb 19, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

they don’t HAVE to “volunteer” their opinions

there are media responsibilities that are NOT voluntary – players can be stopped at a station usually just off the 18th green behind the stands or around the clubhouse – and top players and leaders usually have to go to the media tent after getting cards signed and awards ceremonies.

I heard a guy on the radio here in Atlanta try to compare Tiger’s plan to make a statement to…believe it or not…Michael Vick. Vick had 2 YEARS in jail to think about things. It was a lot more than 3 months before he even went to court, and in that time he lied to the public, the Falcons ownership, his now former teammates…and worst of all, his mother – to her face – on camera.

Three months isn’t all that long a time – and nobody changes their life overnight the way a lot of people seem to think Woods should have.

I agree with Progolf

finally someone in the media stood up to Woods. you don’t get to say who can and can’t attend. it is either open to all who have credentials or none. besides, it was not a press conference. no questions were allowed. all it was was a robot reading a speech. no need for the media to be there.

FG – next time you have a party at your house, please let me know and I’ll spread the word on every corner of your town – then we’ll see how your mind changes on that subject. This was Tiger’s statement – it was never a “press conference”. Three invitations were sent to the GWAA – but that wasn’t good enough, so he doubled it.

Did you see room for 950 seats in that room ? What about the rest of the media that would have made the same demand ?

……besides, you made my point. it WAS NOT a press conference. so if you are the press, why go?

by freeze gopher on Feb 19, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t say it was a party – I used the “next time YOU throw a party” thing as an example…meaning that you throw a party and a whole bunch of uninvited “guests” decide to show up.

yes – Tiger CAN say who and who does not attend – he was the one making all the arrangements (it was his company).

You and I agree – but not with pro – it wasn’t a matter of just not showing up to a place they knew they weren’t invited – the GWAA was making DEMANDS on how they wanted the proceedings to be held, then threw a tantrum when Woods didn’t genuflect.

Back to the “you throwing a party” example – YOU decide on the food and drinks and music – then a crowd of uninvited people shows up demanding steaks and wine when you had beer and hot dogs as the menu…then they start yelling at you and calling you names because you weren’t running out to the store to buy steaks and wine ? I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t put up with them being on your property.

He said he let people down…..but I don’t remember him ever actually asking for forgiveness….I may have missed that. The only 2 “rumors” he addressed were the domestic violence and the performance enhance drugs, which he denied. Based on what he said, he may not be back for awhile, which would confirm his desire to save his marriage and fix his faults. I wish him the best.

He sure does. I’d like to think he was sincere and I would like to see him back on the golf course soon. However, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him take the year off. Whatever you feel about the whole saga, it took guts to get up there and say what he did.

Guts? LOL….not taking questions is cowardly, and blaming the media for following Elin and his kids is just a distraction…the media would not be following Elin and kids if not for what Tiger has done, and he could stop them from following them anytime he wanted, just by opening up to the media, but no, he wants to assert his right to privacy, but he wants to deny the media their right to follow this story. BS….he’s an arrogant coward!

by niblic on Feb 19, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Do you really believe that the media would stop just because they could ask a few questions? You have a lot of faith – I’m a little more cynical than that I’m afraid.

Yes, I really believe that. I also believe that Tiger would never do it, so it’s all just speculation. But the fact of the matter is that the media wants Tiger; by Tiger disappearing and not answering any questions, which is his right, the media has no other recourse than to follow this story in other ways, like by following Elin to see if she’s wearing her wedding ring, which is their right also.

by niblic on Feb 19, 2010 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

No other recourse?

Wow. Just…wow.

I’ll be sure to use this defense when they catch me scaling the wall at Janet Jackson’s estate. You see your honor I want Janet, by Janet disappearing and not answering any of my phone calls, I had no other recourse by to sneak into her home and go through her lingerie drawer.

Actually, I didn’t say that, now did I? I said, and I quote, which for some reason you can’t or won’t do…
“the media has no other recourse than to follow this story in other ways, like by following Elin to see if she’s wearing her wedding ring, which is their right also.”
…note well, I didn’t say anything about breaking any laws, ie. by stalking or scaling a wall.
Now when will you be holding your press conference/reading your statement of apology to me?

my bad – I forgot that dieties such as yourself don’t understand joking around

Your damned right it’s your bad…(and just where exactly is the joking in your statement…“actually – it’s not the media’s "right" – there are stalking laws”?) If you really think that is funny, then you’re delusional. And then you compound your offense by saying…“I forgot that dieties such as yourself”…that is far more offensive than calling someone a “fucking idiot”…if Ryan had any scruples, he’d ban you from this site!

chip,
He could have posted what he said today at his website….when he wants to talk to the public, he should call a press conference and take questions. In the meantime, hire a grammar czar…

“Toward the end of his statement, Tiger addressed his marriage and said: "I understand the press wants to ask me for the details… if Elin and I will remain together… as far as I am concerned every one of these questions and answers are between Elin and I."

…between you and me, I’m too busy posting ar WR to continue to perfrom that service for Tiger, especially, pro bono.

by niblic on Feb 19, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

It was a start. It’s going to be a long hard road and I think he’s 100% correct in saying that the heart of it all is between he and Elin. It’s none of my business, nor do I want or need to know any more than I already do. I’m a golf fan, I want to see the best do their best. Like him, love him, hate him – he’s the best and I want him back playing golf.

http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/19/crisis-manager-michael-sitrick-tiger-woods-speech/

One of the biggest crisis managers in America says Tiger Woods’ address was a great 5 minute speech … problem is it lasted 13 minutes.

by niblic on Feb 19, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

which means

that he wrote, spoke and conveyed his own feelings in the speach. Doesn’t mean he was telling the whole truth or anything, but atleast he spoke in his own words. Nibs what did you think of his level of sincerity, and humility?

Smoke and Mirrors ???

Listen,…I maybe the toughest critic in here regarding TW, but there was just enough in his statement for me to think he’s taking responsiblity. That’s definitely a positive. Is he sincere about being sorry for his actions, or just about getting caught ? Well his words say he’s sorry, but his actions will be the difference maker, as he said. We’ll see. IMO if he comes back too soon, then that action will indicate he’s not sincere about undoing all the wrongs he’s inflicted on his family. People do not change overnight or in a few months. I’ve heard real change from destructive behavior takes 3-5 years. Now,… Woods won’t be out that long, but if he’s serious I’d say it’s 50/50 whether we see him at all this year. If he’s back in a few weeks, then this was all “smoke and mirrors”. He’s made the first step, and I hope he rebuilds what he’s torn down . But it won’t happen in a few weeks. So we’ll see what his future actions will say. I remain doubtful, but there is a chance based on what his “WORDS” were today……………………..Z.

you're still away,...choke on it !

He had to start somewhere

and in my estimation this was a VERY good start. Yes of course “the proof is always in the pudding”, but he said all the right things and I felt it was very sincere. I believe he meant what he said. He can’t change the past, but he can absolutely be better going forward. I look forward to watching his return (whenever that may be) and wish him and his family well.
