DEVELOPING: Tiger Woods Statement Set for 11AM Friday
Tiger Woods will read a statement at 11am on Friday from PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He won't take any questions from the press.
The first I saw was when Darren Rovell's tweet crossed my mobile. As it turns out, Bloomberg's Mike Buteau was the winner some 40 minutes prior, around 1:30p.
In a statement emailed to some members of the press, Tiger's agent Mark Steinberg said, "Tiger will make a public statement to begin to make amends."
Press conference is a bit of a misnomer. "A small group of friends, colleagues" will be invited. According to CBS News, the AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg will be invited. The Golf Writers Association of America will determine the pool of other reporters allowed to cover the event.
Woods last public statement was on his website when he admitted infidelity to his marriage. That was on December 11 - a Friday - and late in the evening. Critics accused Woods of making the revelation late in the news cycle so as to prevent the plethora of sprawling headlines about the news.
UPDATE 7:05pm ET: Tiger Woods has posted a statement on his website that mirrors the email communication sent to selected media. The statement in full:
Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11:00 a.m. EST on Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future, and he plans to apologize for his behavior.
While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that's what he's going to discuss.
His remarks will be open to a press pool for live coverage. It is NOT a news conference.
According to Mashable, CBS News will broadcast the reading of the statement on UStream at 11am Friday.

If this is
the way the scum bag is going to handle it, I can’t wait to yell in the middle of his back swing…what a jerk…you can bet the suits and agents have spent all this time writing this so called “apology”..he doesn’t have the brains…STUB
Rovell works for CNBC – surprised you don’t know him, D. (ducking) :-D
Fox and Buteau had it all about the same time…but FoxNews.com CORRECTLY filed it under “News and Gossip” – gotta love it.
Stub – They would have to rent out the stadium where the Jacksonville Jaguars play if they made this an open press conference. Think about it – this has been THE biggest tabloid story of the last year – and the biggest tabloid story connected to golf probably ever. The media will have connections to pick up the conference, but they will probably only have suck-ups like Dougie Ferguson and someone from xxx Golf Channel in the room. You figure 99.999% of all questions would be identical with the tabloid slime wanting to know if any of the women had an extra nipple and which onese were screamers.
Mark Steinberg says only a small group of “friends, colleagues, and close associates” will be allowed in the room.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Here's the toe-dip...
…and it’s looking like you might be right about the Tavistock Cup.
I thought I heard somewhere that the deadline passed to commit for the Masters. Is that true? If so, then I wonder when he’ll play (aside from the Tavistock Cup, if he does choose to play there).
Maybe this will all be illuminated on Friday. Then again, maybe any plans to return will be intentionally vague.
by Double Eagle on Feb 17, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions
No – committments are open until the Friday before tournaments.
Tiger is a past champion – he is on the list.
I saw something yesterday that TIger was at the clubhouse talking about the Tavistock Cup.
lol – vague is probably a good bet for most of what he will have to say.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Yeah, I knew about the Friday deadline, but didn’t know if the Masters had different requirements. I know he’s in for life, but I figured there was some kind of RSVP requested or required. I wish I could find where I read that. For all I know, it could have been some random tweet or blog post with no basis in reality.

LMAO@court hahaha
You got that right about Ferguson being a “suck-up”, I’d almost be willing to wager a few pasos that ole Fergy is getting an envelope once a month from TGC. LOL@ extra nipple and screamers. hahahahahaha Gawd I pay to see the look on TW face if someone ever asked that question. hahahaha
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Good lord - way to to Jim Gray !
Asking Finchem what Tiger is going to say. What an IDIOT !!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn’t sound like Finchem knows if there will be questions allowed – he passed it along to Tiger’s PR guy, Glen Greenspan.
And again – Gray asks questions that only Tiger can answer – turn in your microphone, Mr Gray – you’re useless.
Finchem is doing a good job being nice about these questions.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Finally some definitive breaking news on Tiger's
indefinite break, and nothing out of the mouths of babes.
Pay attention TX – Jim Gray and Tim Finchem – definitely NOT in the “babe” catagory. :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I meant there'll be no quotes or rumors from Tiger's babes,
and I’m pretty sure you’re just kidding around. First time for everything, I suppose.
She was sooo funny in that.
Funny as host on SNL way back when too. Funny whatever she did. But she’s no WendyUK.
tigerhead posted this in the Tiger facts fanpost thread…
“Tiger will indeed return. He will be the great player he always has been and continue on his record breaking quest. Secondly, but more importantly he will come back a better man, humbled by this experience. He will learn from his mistakes and be better for it”
…sorry tigerhead, same old arrogant Tiger is returning. Tiger is soooo important that he needs to announce 48 hrs in advance when he is going to speak, and to clarify that he wouldn’t think about answering any questions. And while he’s at it, why not make that superfluous announcement right at the beginning of the tournament sponsored by Accenture who had the decency to cancel their endorsement contract with Tiger, and carry it through the tournament so you’ll be the topic of conversation, not the real golfers.
Yep, same old arrogant, self-important Tiger returning….em66 was right!
last time I checked – being an a-hole, selfish or not, is not against the law. he OWES us nothing.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Last time I checked, I didn’t say it was against the law. Try to keep up with the discussion here, court. Tigerhead made a prediction, I quoted that prediction and said that so far, he was wrong….Tiger hasn’t come back a better man, he’s still a selfish arrogant prick.
it really is useless trying to talk to you – you know absolutely nothing of what is going on with the man, like the rest of us, yet you have decided that he is a prick, and an arrogant selfish bastard. You make demands about how he makes his first public appearance and if he doesn’t meet what you want, you go back to the name calling.
“Tiger hasn’t come back a better man.” Just how in all your omniscience can you make that statement ? You don’t know the man – you don’t know what he has been going through – you don’t know what he has been doing to make himself a better man. So tell us – oh man of ultimate knowledge and wisdom – just HOW do you know that Tiger isn’t a better man than he was 3 months ago…or 2 months ago…or last month…or last week…or yesterday ? Isn’t that the usual idea, to take it one day at a time ? Or is he supposed to be able to snap his fingers and make the world a better place for all of us, and through some magic he gets Elin’s trust back ?
Fill us in, Dahli Niblic.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Now court
consider the “source” look back on the “sources” posting record, and reflect on some of the “news” he has shared with us. Bizarre is a nice way to describe the ramblings of the “source”. He is the constant “source” of much consternation here, and the “sources” he quotes are the who’s who of rag mags. He prays for the man’s marriage, then lashes out with rants of lunacy. He’s obviously obsessed with the Woods family, and this situation. But atleast it looks like his prayers are being answered.

Tiger News of the Day
Jist for you F&G…you won’t have to watch Tiger tomorrow, this says it all…
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/02/tiger-woods-set-return-golf
A day after Woods was seen out of sex rehab and jogging in Orlando, Florida, the author of a unauthorized biography on Tiger tells WESH-TV in Orlando that Tiger will play in the Tavistock Cup at Isleworth next month.
…they have been right all along with this Tiger scandal and you have chosen to denigrate them everytime I posted, but I don’t recall one apology from you when you were proven wrong. That says it all about you!
Good for Ernie
http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4924113
“It’s selfish,” former U.S. Open and British Open champion Ernie Els told Golfweek magazine. “You can write that. I feel sorry for the sponsor. Mondays are a good day to make statements, not Friday. This takes a lot away from the golf tournament.”
….Skip Bayless and Scoop Jackson on First Take this morning said the exact same thing as I’ve been saying here, but then I’m sure you don’t listen to them either…you already know everything. We can only judge whether Tiger is a better man by what he does, not what you and tigerhead hope he does. What he is doing with this statement(don’t call it a press conference) is an arrogant, selfish, vindictive act against Accenture. Everyone in the world can see this except enabling Tiger sycophants like you and tigerhead…it doesn’t take omniscience, it just takes a brain.
Nibs.....If this is an act
of revenge on Tiger’s part, that would indicate that nothing has changed. We shall see what he says and how he says it………
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
really ? you can say that for a fact ? a person can’t have a vindictiveness over a sponsorship dumping him – yet feel bad that he hurt his wife and family ? unless Woods becomes a saint, or at least a celibate monk, he hasn’t changed at all ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Well, lets see how that works.....
I can hear it now…..Tiger: I am a changed man. I will not sleep with 14 sluts anymore!(of course 13 is a different matter) I am putting family first (sound familiar?). I will still be a vindictive jerk, and a filthy mouthed no class punk, I will continue to throw my clubs in fits of rage and I will continue to treat my fans with disdain. No questions! I’m outta here……..Now that’s CHANGE we can live with….lol
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
lol – I see what you mean – maybe he’ll have a few Obama campaign signs flown in ?
honestly – it doesn’t much matter what he says tomorrow – it’s how he behaves that matters. we all know the joke about how you can tell a politician is lying….his lips are moving.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
It does behoove him to
behave, but how much behaving does it take to make a statement. A frisky Q&A, now that would be a behavior booster.
He wouldn't be in control.....it's all about control!
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Coming from a (good) guy
whose wife controls the remote.
how do you figure that ? answering stupid questions is a behavior booster ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
For Tiger....almost anything would qualify......like
waking up in bed alone…….
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Getting down to brass facts,
so to speak, is what lots of folks would like to see/hear.
Then Tiger’s reactions/behavior/body language would come into play.
But Tiger’s taking an unplayable.
that’s what I was trying to convey to tigerhead, but even with all his degrees and his high esteem, he couldn’t figure that out like a country bumpkin from LA…LOL
Maybe so Niblic, but
nothing about him making a public apology and statement disproves my prediction. Logic would say we’ll need to wait a while to see how this unfolds.

Anyone want to make book...
…on the tears being shed during the statement? I’d put the odds at 3 to 1 against, but I’m sure we all remember Jimmy Swaggert’s performance – which was entertaining if nothing else.

Ooooo – call Vegas ! Don’t forget, Swaggert had YEARS of tears-on-demand training, and there are some actors who can’t do it after a lot of practice. You may have to look closely for an onion on the podium…or maybe look where Elin’s hands are – a good pinch in the right place might work, too.

Scripted
Gee ,, Go Figure, Another Scripted statement written and word smithed by the best PR and Marketing Firm money can buy. This is nothing new as he did the same thing on his website months ago. Pathetic if ya ask me. Lemmee guess, he’s gonna say Sorry for the indescretions, sorry to my family and fans, and I’m coming back to play at XYZ tournament and please be patient with me. Not taking any questions and reading a statement written by a PR firm = No Balls and a true sign of insecurity. Gee I wonder when the new book deal and movie is coming out.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Something you’re not considering – this statement is going to have to pass the Elin test. She’s going to have something to say about what he says since she is still victim #1, and the one he has to go home to.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I believe progolf has not considered that...
…because he/she feels Woods is undeserving of consideration.
For my part, I’ll wait and see what Tiger has to say.
UAHuntsville.
Undeserving of consideration ?
I never said that. Gee wiz. Kick me in the ankles why dont ya ? lol, No worries mate, its all good.

Tiger News of the Day #2
Tiger Woods and his wife had dinner together Tuesday night, RadarOnlne.com has learned exclusively.
Tiger desperately wants to save the marriage and he understands that it is going to be a long, long time (if ever) before Elin gets over his betrayal.
…hey jumpn/progolf…if this is true, then you may win your bet yet about him not returning this year.
Anyone know what they ate?
I only ask because I’m getting pretty hungry and I’m undecided as to what to eat.
UAHuntsville.
By the way
The “Private News Conference” that only friends and close associates are invited to is taking place in the Clubhouse at Sawgrass. Imagine that I didn’t even get an invite. So much for the ole saying, “Membership Has it’s Privileges” Good thing I’m up in Chicago on business or I’d try to sneak in. Nah !! Actually I spoke to several guys at the club today and they said even the members entrance to the clubhouse with have police security and special badges would be issued in advance for those with invites to the scripted reading. My girlfriend has promissed me she will be on the upper veranda with a few of the other member wives looking for dirt. lol
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
LMAO !
sounds like you have your spies in place !
I didn’t know you were a member there. What the heck happened to having a Palm Restaurant in the clubhouse ? I was pretty disappointed…our co-host runs the Atlanta Palm…we were looking forward to getting to play there. :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
No Clue Court
I recall hearing something about that about 8 months ago and forgot all about it. I kinda like Champions anyway, but we usualy eat in the Nineteen Lounge. Its a little more relaxed without all the snoots thumbing their noses at us loud people. lol ( at least I admit it ) Yeah the girly spies. I can see them broads now in disguises, saying, “Badges ? We Don’t need NO Stinkin Badges” Kinda wish I was home for it. O ’h well.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Well, he's finally gonna man up and show his face!
But it’s a coward’s press conference…..no questions……hmmmmm, very brave. Here’s what is going to happen……Tiger will crawl out of the hole he has been hiding in and then he will see his shadow…..at which time he will announce 6 more months of hiding….then he will slink back into his hole. What a guy.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
call it what you want – it’s not a press conference (one guy called it a “gathering” – pretty funny) – but there are a WHOLE lot of very good reasons they can’t have a wide open press conference on this.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
start with the obvious – THOUSANDS of legitimate, semi-legitimate, and dog squeeze tabloid “journalists” with lawyers on speed dial would demand to be there. They would have to rent the arena where the Magic play basketball to get everybody in.
questions would take days to get out without threats of legal action for not being allowed to ask a question even though most of the questions would be repetitive, cliche, and more than a little stupid.
This is meant to be a first step to getting his public image repaired – not a “get your book written” meeting.
And most of all – in case you’ve forgotten – the media STILL has no legal or constitutional right to ask Woods or anybody around him anything. Call him all the names you want – but he doesn’t HAVE to answer question one from these people.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I see some
may be a bit scared Tiger may be coming back soon…lol Look at the bright side though, you’ll have many new chances to spill crap about him. Enjoy yourselves. In the mean time, Tiger will continue doing what he needs to do. I look forward to his return and hope his making progress in his personal and private troubles.
Roll Tide !!
tigerhead,
You can hope all you want about your hero making progress in his quest to become a better person, but the facts are the facts….he’s still the same selfish, arrogant prick. And don’t bother answering any of my points, I know you don’t have any answers…
“…sorry tigerhead, same old arrogant Tiger is returning. Tiger is soooo important that he needs to announce 48 hrs in advance when he is going to speak, and to clarify that he wouldn’t think about answering any questions. And while he’s at it, why not make that superfluous announcement right at the beginning of the tournament sponsored by Accenture who had the decency to cancel their endorsement contract with Tiger, and carry it through the tournament so you’ll be the topic of conversation, not the real golfers.”
What is it I'm supposed to be answering?
Should I be wasting my time trying to change your mind? You’ve clearly made your judgment and so be it. I have no problem with it whatsoever. I see it differently and prefer to give this some time and see how it plays out. Guess that makes me ignorant huh? Oh well what’s a blogger to do…lol
Roll Tide !!
You’re kidding me? Read my first post in this thread, posted at 112PM PST yesterday, you even replied to it, but you didn’t address any of the arguments I made. I even quoted you saying how Tiger would return a better man, humbled by his experiences, yada, yada, yada. So is this how a humble man returns to golf….makes his first public appearance in 3 months? Perhaps we just have a different definition of “humble”?
Look Nibs
perhaps it’s a mistake to make his statement on a Friday, but it’s far to early to make leaping judgments about how he will return. What is clear is most everyone has pre-judged this event before we even hear what he has to say. You even said “it doesn’t matter what he says”. But let me just clear up something I thought was fairly obvious, my prediction is about the rest of Tiger’s career, not his first ten minutes back in the spotlight; it’s a forecast of the long term picture not the short term.
Roll Tide !!
If Tiger does change and show some humility, I will be the first to acknowledge it. The way he is handling this is selfish and arrogant. But I just read this and I have to give Team Tiger credit for it, and it was not known yesterday when I made my post…

“Steinberg said there was no intention to upstage Accenture’s sponsorship of the Match Play tournament, according to Golfweek. He said he alerted a company executive of Woods’ plans, and made sure his statement would be made “well outside the tournament’s TV window.”
An Accenture spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com that Steinberg gave the company a heads-up."
alex miceli
I don’t think what Alex Miceli said was so bad and many in the golf world concur. Same goes for Rory Mcllroy and his statement on Tigers return. I’ve been saying for a very long time that most people would be very surprised about what actualy gets said about the topic “OFF CAMERA” Good on Miceli for being brave enough to speak his mind and do it in a public forum on LIVE TV. Unscripted I might ad.

you sure about that court ? Its not a simple process getting guest in to play. Its a crazy guest lottery system we have here. I got em penciled in for November if all goes as planned.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
really ? members have to enter a lottery to have a guest ? how many members are there at Sawgrass ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Not sure about total membership
last year when a member friend of mine wanted to have multiple guest play at the “Stadium Course” he had to book well in advance and even with that had to be put on some sort of member/guest pick system to get those peticular dates. I guess you would call it a lottery for lack other terms. As I always understood it, “in the membership rule book” it only was suppose to be a 2 week notice. Honestly I never read the damn thing. My copy is 7 years old also. Perhaps the pick list is only for the Stadium Course as thats where everyone always wants to play. Probably cause of the infamous 17th.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
This really
highlights the reason the tour needs Tiger back playing. If the media and more people are interested in watching Tiger read a statement than the golf tournament itself, then that says quite a lot now doesn’t it.

said something you and F&G wanted, he would be hailed as the “brilliant” 20 year old prodigy……hmmm.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Jumpn....I know that, but

yeah,
those two are definitely the voices of golf. Hey, we’ll let you true golf fans know how the news conference went. since, we know you wouldn’t be caught watching something concerning TW. True golf fans do not watch anything concerning Woods. He’s not a true golfer after all. Em I won’t let you keep hitting me with the off color jokes, and the below the belt shots. Civility has it’s limits, and you are on the outskirts of town. Be careful. Two can play that game.

I could care less what the “man-ho” has to say. I’ll be walking the course and watching the real MEN play! Used to be Tiger let his clubs do his talking. Lately he’s talking out his a$$. Pr0bably thanks to IMG. I’m sure TGC will make it a new “Top 10” series, so I’ll maybe catch it next winter or whenever. I really don’t care what the phony has to say because he’s a verfied liar.

more importantly – where are you playing tomorrow ? you realize most of us still have to live vicariously through you. (lol)

Geez you’re right,!!!…he hasn’t spoken a word on his own for months. What a guy. I suppose I’m confusing his web site posts as actuallly coming from TW himself, when they were authored by the spin doctors at IMG. What a major oversight on my part ! LMFAO

There’s a word for a weekend like that….SWEEEEEET !!!

USA-USA-USA !!!
It’ll be even sweeter if our boys can beat our northern neighbours. In the WGC I’m sticking with the bull-terrier Clark. He is sooooo overdue ………………Z.

I think I've made a breakthough...
I think I can honestly say, “I don’t care”. I mean, I know I’m going to get to read about it, and I’m sure there will be links posted all over the place for his “statement”, but the strange interest I had when this first happened is gone. And I couldn’t be more thankful. I just hope people are willing to talk about the WGC, or the LPGA, or any other golf thing besides TW in the next few days, too.
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
