DEVELOPING: Tiger Woods Statement Set for 11AM Friday

Tiger Woods will read a statement at 11am on Friday from PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.  He won't take any questions from the press.

The first I saw was when Darren Rovell's tweet crossed my mobile.  As it turns out, Bloomberg's Mike Buteau was the winner some 40 minutes prior, around 1:30p.

In a statement emailed to some members of the press, Tiger's agent Mark Steinberg said, "Tiger will make a public statement to begin to make amends."

Press conference is a bit of a misnomer.  "A small group of friends, colleagues" will be invited.  According to CBS News, the AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg will be invited.  The Golf Writers Association of America will determine the pool of other reporters allowed to cover the event.

Woods last public statement was on his website when he admitted infidelity to his marriage.  That was on December 11 - a Friday - and late in the evening.  Critics accused Woods of making the revelation late in the news cycle so as to prevent the plethora of sprawling headlines about the news.

UPDATE 7:05pm ET: Tiger Woods has posted a statement on his website that mirrors the email communication sent to selected media.  The statement in full:

Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11:00 a.m. EST on Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future, and he plans to apologize for his behavior.

While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that's what he's going to discuss.

His remarks will be open to a press pool for live coverage. It is NOT a news conference.

According to Mashable, CBS News will broadcast the reading of the statement on UStream at 11am Friday.

Who is Darren Rovell? Is he any better connected than stub?

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

by dianemarie on Feb 17, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions

Rovell works for CNBC – surprised you don’t know him, D. (ducking) :-D

Fox and Buteau had it all about the same time…but FoxNews.com CORRECTLY filed it under “News and Gossip” – gotta love it.

Stub – They would have to rent out the stadium where the Jacksonville Jaguars play if they made this an open press conference. Think about it – this has been THE biggest tabloid story of the last year – and the biggest tabloid story connected to golf probably ever. The media will have connections to pick up the conference, but they will probably only have suck-ups like Dougie Ferguson and someone from xxx Golf Channel in the room. You figure 99.999% of all questions would be identical with the tabloid slime wanting to know if any of the women had an extra nipple and which onese were screamers.

Mark Steinberg says only a small group of “friends, colleagues, and close associates” will be allowed in the room.

Here's the toe-dip...

…and it’s looking like you might be right about the Tavistock Cup.

I thought I heard somewhere that the deadline passed to commit for the Masters. Is that true? If so, then I wonder when he’ll play (aside from the Tavistock Cup, if he does choose to play there).

Maybe this will all be illuminated on Friday. Then again, maybe any plans to return will be intentionally vague.

by Double Eagle on Feb 17, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

No – committments are open until the Friday before tournaments.

Tiger is a past champion – he is on the list.

I saw something yesterday that TIger was at the clubhouse talking about the Tavistock Cup.

lol – vague is probably a good bet for most of what he will have to say.

Yeah, I knew about the Friday deadline, but didn’t know if the Masters had different requirements. I know he’s in for life, but I figured there was some kind of RSVP requested or required. I wish I could find where I read that. For all I know, it could have been some random tweet or blog post with no basis in reality.

LMAO@court hahaha

You got that right about Ferguson being a “suck-up”, I’d almost be willing to wager a few pasos that ole Fergy is getting an envelope once a month from TGC. LOL@ extra nipple and screamers. hahahahahaha Gawd I pay to see the look on TW face if someone ever asked that question. hahahaha

Good lord - way to to Jim Gray !

Asking Finchem what Tiger is going to say. What an IDIOT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn’t sound like Finchem knows if there will be questions allowed – he passed it along to Tiger’s PR guy, Glen Greenspan.

And again – Gray asks questions that only Tiger can answer – turn in your microphone, Mr Gray – you’re useless.

Finchem is doing a good job being nice about these questions.

tigerhead posted this in the Tiger facts fanpost thread…
“Tiger will indeed return. He will be the great player he always has been and continue on his record breaking quest. Secondly, but more importantly he will come back a better man, humbled by this experience. He will learn from his mistakes and be better for it”
…sorry tigerhead, same old arrogant Tiger is returning. Tiger is soooo important that he needs to announce 48 hrs in advance when he is going to speak, and to clarify that he wouldn’t think about answering any questions. And while he’s at it, why not make that superfluous announcement right at the beginning of the tournament sponsored by Accenture who had the decency to cancel their endorsement contract with Tiger, and carry it through the tournament so you’ll be the topic of conversation, not the real golfers.
Yep, same old arrogant, self-important Tiger returning….em66 was right!

Last time I checked, I didn’t say it was against the law. Try to keep up with the discussion here, court. Tigerhead made a prediction, I quoted that prediction and said that so far, he was wrong….Tiger hasn’t come back a better man, he’s still a selfish arrogant prick.

by niblic on Feb 17, 2010 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

it really is useless trying to talk to you – you know absolutely nothing of what is going on with the man, like the rest of us, yet you have decided that he is a prick, and an arrogant selfish bastard. You make demands about how he makes his first public appearance and if he doesn’t meet what you want, you go back to the name calling.

“Tiger hasn’t come back a better man.” Just how in all your omniscience can you make that statement ? You don’t know the man – you don’t know what he has been going through – you don’t know what he has been doing to make himself a better man. So tell us – oh man of ultimate knowledge and wisdom – just HOW do you know that Tiger isn’t a better man than he was 3 months ago…or 2 months ago…or last month…or last week…or yesterday ? Isn’t that the usual idea, to take it one day at a time ? Or is he supposed to be able to snap his fingers and make the world a better place for all of us, and through some magic he gets Elin’s trust back ?

Fill us in, Dahli Niblic.

Now court

consider the “source” look back on the “sources” posting record, and reflect on some of the “news” he has shared with us. Bizarre is a nice way to describe the ramblings of the “source”. He is the constant “source” of much consternation here, and the “sources” he quotes are the who’s who of rag mags. He prays for the man’s marriage, then lashes out with rants of lunacy. He’s obviously obsessed with the Woods family, and this situation. But atleast it looks like his prayers are being answered.

Tiger News of the Day

Jist for you F&G…you won’t have to watch Tiger tomorrow, this says it all…

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2010/02/tiger-woods-set-return-golf

A day after Woods was seen out of sex rehab and jogging in Orlando, Florida, the author of a unauthorized biography on Tiger tells WESH-TV in Orlando that Tiger will play in the Tavistock Cup at Isleworth next month.

…they have been right all along with this Tiger scandal and you have chosen to denigrate them everytime I posted, but I don’t recall one apology from you when you were proven wrong. That says it all about you!

Good for Ernie

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4924113

“It’s selfish,” former U.S. Open and British Open champion Ernie Els told Golfweek magazine. “You can write that. I feel sorry for the sponsor. Mondays are a good day to make statements, not Friday. This takes a lot away from the golf tournament.”

….Skip Bayless and Scoop Jackson on First Take this morning said the exact same thing as I’ve been saying here, but then I’m sure you don’t listen to them either…you already know everything. We can only judge whether Tiger is a better man by what he does, not what you and tigerhead hope he does. What he is doing with this statement(don’t call it a press conference) is an arrogant, selfish, vindictive act against Accenture. Everyone in the world can see this except enabling Tiger sycophants like you and tigerhead…it doesn’t take omniscience, it just takes a brain.

start with the obvious – THOUSANDS of legitimate, semi-legitimate, and dog squeeze tabloid “journalists” with lawyers on speed dial would demand to be there. They would have to rent the arena where the Magic play basketball to get everybody in.

questions would take days to get out without threats of legal action for not being allowed to ask a question even though most of the questions would be repetitive, cliche, and more than a little stupid.

This is meant to be a first step to getting his public image repaired – not a “get your book written” meeting.

And most of all – in case you’ve forgotten – the media STILL has no legal or constitutional right to ask Woods or anybody around him anything. Call him all the names you want – but he doesn’t HAVE to answer question one from these people.

Look Nibs

perhaps it’s a mistake to make his statement on a Friday, but it’s far to early to make leaping judgments about how he will return. What is clear is most everyone has pre-judged this event before we even hear what he has to say. You even said “it doesn’t matter what he says”. But let me just clear up something I thought was fairly obvious, my prediction is about the rest of Tiger’s career, not his first ten minutes back in the spotlight; it’s a forecast of the long term picture not the short term.

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4924113

“Steinberg said there was no intention to upstage Accenture’s sponsorship of the Match Play tournament, according to Golfweek. He said he alerted a company executive of Woods’ plans, and made sure his statement would be made “well outside the tournament’s TV window.”

An Accenture spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com that Steinberg gave the company a heads-up."

alex miceli

I don’t think what Alex Miceli said was so bad and many in the golf world concur. Same goes for Rory Mcllroy and his statement on Tigers return. I’ve been saying for a very long time that most people would be very surprised about what actualy gets said about the topic “OFF CAMERA” Good on Miceli for being brave enough to speak his mind and do it in a public forum on LIVE TV. Unscripted I might ad.

Micelli is a writer – he had all afternoon to consider what he was going to say – you can bet your bottom dollar that he made notes and knew exactly what he was going to say.

Unscripted, but calculated

This raises Miceli’s status. Shows nerve, and a willingness to mix it up. Not to mention TGC has “laid off” some less than stellar employees lately. This set’s Miceli apart from the crowd. He thought before he spoke, which isn’t a bad thing.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Feb 17, 2010 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure about total membership

last year when a member friend of mine wanted to have multiple guest play at the “Stadium Course” he had to book well in advance and even with that had to be put on some sort of member/guest pick system to get those peticular dates. I guess you would call it a lottery for lack other terms. As I always understood it, “in the membership rule book” it only was suppose to be a 2 week notice. Honestly I never read the damn thing. My copy is 7 years old also. Perhaps the pick list is only for the Stadium Course as thats where everyone always wants to play. Probably cause of the infamous 17th.

This really

highlights the reason the tour needs Tiger back playing. If the media and more people are interested in watching Tiger read a statement than the golf tournament itself, then that says quite a lot now doesn’t it.

yeah,

True golf fans do not watch anything concerning Woods. He’s not a true golfer after all. Em I won’t let you keep hitting me with the off color jokes, and the below the belt shots. I could care less what the “man-ho” has to say. I’ll be walking the course and watching the real MEN play! Used to be Tiger let his clubs do his talking. Lately he’s talking out his a$$.
