Tiger Not in the Match Play, Giving Stricker #1 Seed & Spot to McGowan

Just as was predicted in this space (and a whole lot of others), Tiger Woods opted not to enter the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship next week.  The deadline was 5pm ET today.  Without Woods, world number two Steve Stricker assumes the #1 spot in the draw of sixty-four.

Phil Mickelson will also not be participated, as previously announced, due to him being with his wife for treatment in Amy's battle against breast cancer.

That leaves opportunities in the field for two player: Chris Wood and Ross McGowan.

With the number one and three players in the world out of the field, the four top seeds are Stricker, Lee Westwood (#4 in the world), Jim Furyk, and Martin Kaymer.

It'll be interesting...

to see what Chris Wood can do in the match play. That’s a good break for both him and the tournament, I think.

Progolf, In Your Expert Opinion....

Tell me which was the bigger upset:

1. The 1980 US Hockey team in the Winter Olympics
2. Y.E. Yang in the 2009 PGA
3. James “Buster” Douglas taking apart Mike Tyson on 2/11/90 to capture the World Heavyweight title.

I am going with Douglas, because in that fight no one gave him a snowball’s chance against Tyson, because of his previous record and because his mother had died a mere three weeks prior to the fight. It was an upset of such monumental proportions at the time that it’s hard to truly appreciate it in retrospect.

Your take?

by Charles Boyer on Feb 13, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Expert ? OMP me ?

Hardly I can’t speak on the 1980 Olympics Hockey victory cause at that time I was 7 years deep into my own boxing career and didn’t pay much attention to much else accept for a round of golf about twice a month at that time. I’m sure there are many a hockey fan out there that probably ranks the US victory as one of the biggest upsets of all times.

Yangs victory was pretty monumental in the golf world, but it was inevidable as time goes that tiger would lose after a 54 hole lead. Yangs shot on 18 in the clutch on the 72nd hole was "FAN"Tastic and made for a great victory.

Of the 3 you listed, I would have to go with the 1990 Buster Douglas KO. Being just as big of a boxing fan as I am golf fan I will say that though that was a major turning point in Mikes career, but certainly not the biggest victory in the boxing world. To many others to choose from ie Hagler / Hearns, Hagler / Leonard , and many a Jack Dempsey fight.

So, yes Tyson/ Douglas of the 3 choices I have to choose from.

That surprises me, pro. I figured you would have put Douglas 3rd on that list. Tyson didn’t take the fight seriously, and Douglas, though he didn’t have a great record, was still a dangerous puncher. Tyson gave him an opening for his best punch and got laid out.

Re the Tyson-Douglas Debate,

Douglas fought the near-perfect fight, keeping the ear eater at bay with a steady, strong left jab.

But the biggest upset, IMO, has gotta be Zimmer Vs. Martinez. A first-round throw-down. Didn’t see that coming.

by TXQ on Feb 13, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Douglas vs Tyson

Court, Tyson took every fight seriously. I would say he took to much for granted against Buster. Buster Douglas at the time was only 30 y/o and had a decent record of 34 and 4 and had just come off three good victories in 1989. He beat Oliver McCall, Trever Berbick and Mike Williams. First thing you are taught and last thing you here from the referee before any fight starts is “Protect Yourself at all Times” and Tyson failed to do that. I have the Sports Illustrated with Tyson on the canvass framed on my Boxing Hall of Shame wall.

What was your take on him coming in overweight and not in nearly the shape he usually was ? Tyson was always lean and mean for a fight. That night, he was almost “flabby”, relatively speaking.

Tyson

Was only 7 lbs heavier for that fight, now very much for a guy his size. Like I said he took Douglas for granted and didn’t arrive in Tokyo, Japan until 3 days prior to the fight. Another mistake on his part. Tyson had a poor pre-fight training regiment. Kinda like Daly hating practice. Douglas was in Tokyo 2 weeks prior to the fight and worked out for 10 of those days. I’m pretty good friends with Larry Holmes and he and I have discussed this same fight on many occasions with very similar discussion and opinion.

Dustin Johnson is kicking ass so far today. grrrrrrrrrrr I didn’t pick him this week, but I’m looking ok with Harrington, Marino and Tim Clark.

Tyson in his first few years looked invincible..

Just like Liston and Forman. Tyson got exposed for what he was…a very good slugger. If Douglas was a one off, Tyson would have regained the title for a few years more. Like the other two, once he was knocked out, he was never the same again.

by Easingwold on Feb 13, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Liston and Foreman were big guys – tall and rangey. Tyson isn’t. The guy had lightning fast hands and moved really well. Tyson’s problem was between his ears, and I think in his heart. When Cuss D’Amato died, he really lost his anchor to reality. I always thought he could have been an all-timer with the right team behind him…but Don King doesn’t qualify for that.

I always felt Larry Holmes never got

the credit he deserved. Held the title for many years and fought everyone. Just no punch to his personality.

by TXQ on Feb 13, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Holmes did all he could...

probably suffered from lack of all time great opposition.

true court

Cus D’Amato passed away in 1985. He was Mikes, Dad, Mentor and trainer all in one. I met Cus in Sacramento before one of my fights ( I was like the 5th undercard that night) He was a great guy and a true advocate of the Sweet Science

wow – that had to be a real honor to meet a man like D’Amato. I always wondered if Stallone based “Mickey” on him.

It was I guess

That was back in 1976 and I was just a teenager and was too young to realize what an impact he had on the sport overall.

The New York Mets beating the Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series. God(George Burns) admitted it was the last miracle he performed.

Nope Em

I was hoping for that though, that would have bee a blast picking and a total game changer for Fantasy Golf with only 65 players and elimination inevidable. Next weeks Fantasy Tournament is the “em66 Who Dat Invitational” LOL Next week is "Mayakoba Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun for Fantasy and Reality.

I think you guys all took too many head

shots…all except EM, cause he’s positively “in my corner” against club fighter Jumpin…Ugh Ryan, I think you slipped on this one…The reason Mickelnuts is not playing, as he announced that his girls were on vacation, and that they had been promised a trip…nothing was said about the wifes treatments…We all commented at the time, wasn’t it refreshing to see someone put family before golf….just saying…STUB

school vacation in FEBRUARY ?? why am I not buying that ? He’s bailed on the Tour Championship with that excuse before, plus a claim to be “shutting it down” for the season, only to hop in the jet to play in Asia (for an extra $3 million under the table)

CG,

his kids go to a private school….any yea, he needed the money to pay for the vacation…Surly, you don’t begrudge the poor guy that….after all, he’s worked so hard with out a real break…kinda like Easing and the night shit….STUB

LOL - yeah - he needs a break

Not sure I follow, Stub. Private or public school – a vacation week in FEBRUARY ?? It hasn’t seemed to bother him enough in years past to skip a WGC event.
