Rory McIlroy Has Back Problems, AKA Fred Couples Syndrome
Rory McIlroy is 20 years old and the back of a 50 year old man Fred Couples Syndrome. The Associated Press reports today that McIlroy has some stretched back ligaments that hurt the 7th ranked golfer, but he won't be missing time.
His agent, Chubby Chandler, says the 20-year-old from Northern Ireland had a back scan on Monday night that revealed nothing more than stretched ligaments. Chandler says it came from 10 days of practice last month to get ready for the season, then playing two tournaments in three weeks.
The thing about McIlroy's swing (as Shane Bacon points out with a video demo) is that he swings too hard, stands too upright, and is not fluid enough in his motion. It performs well inside the ropes, but it has to be killing his back.
And if you don't agree with that assessment, then would you believe me if I said that McIlroy is probably worn out from his girlfriend?

Wow – that blizzard is really paying off for you RB – returning to the medical studies (being the Renaissance Man that you are) and discovering a back ailment named for Fred Couples ! (but I’m thinking that most mortal men would consider it a small price to pay for that girlfriend) :-D
Seriously, though, it would be a shame if this turns out to be something that bothers him long term and spoils a promising career.

cOURT,
how about a combination of both…can you remember your 20s???…STUB
I had them surgically removed…disco and hair band era – didn’t seem worth keeping.

Good thing you escaped those years with no gifts that keep on giving.
And I thought the hair band era was the 80’s? The 70’s rockers were generally very serious chaps at least musically. I would certainly never count Led Zeppelin, The Stones, The Who, Yes and the like as a hair band.

As for McIlroy’s swing, yes, it has some serious flaws that may rear their ugly head in the long run. Even a 20 year old kid can’t constantly stress their spine like that forever, and McIlroy is already showing signs of physical degeneration. He would be quite wise to rehab himself and then learn better form, lest his career will be a very short one or checkered at best.
