Tiger Woods remains golf’s top money maker

December 29 -- Lee Westwood may have surpassed Tiger Woods on the golf course, but Woods is still No. 1 at the bank, where it counts.

Despite losing several sponsors and finishing an abbreviated season without a win, Woods maintained his top ranking on Golf Digest’s eighth annual roster of golf’s top 50 money bags. He earned $48 million less overall in 2010 than he did the year before, but Tiger still stuffed his wallet with $74.2 million ($2.2 million on the course, $72 million outside the ropes). That figure was good for the top spot, some $34 million more than runner-up Phil Mickelson’s $40.1 million ($4.1 million on course, $36 million off).

Star-divide

On the course, Jim Furyk cleaned up, with $16.3 million and a second-place finish on the PGA Tour money list. With “only” $7.2 million in off-course wages, small wonder the 2010 FedExCup champ had to economize with a $39 used putter to finish the Deutsche Bank Championship. Furyk finished sixth on Golf Digest’s list, behind Woods, Mickelson, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Jack Nicklaus.

As for the world’s best golfer, Westwood had to satisfy himself with $14.7 million ($9.2 million/$5.5 million) and a ninth-place Golf Digest finish. One might safely bet that Westwood would rather sit atop the Official World Golf Rankings than the Golf Digest 50.

In addition to using the professional golf tours’ official money lists, Golf Digest based its findings on “interviews with agents, players, executives of companies involved with endorsements, [and] industry analysts.” Click here for the full list of golf’s top earners.

"Where it counts?"

What a load of rubbish. Norman won a lot more money, Faldo won a lot more majors. The bank numbers mean little when they are multi millionaires already.

Wendy.....Actually, I think it is meaningless

right after the first umpteen millions + 1, but I could be wrong.

Now for the important question…..Have you signed up for the fantasy golf??? Don’t make me tell you twice…..get it done!!

"meaningless" ? be serious

Somebody asked Howard Hughes how much it takes to be rich.

His answer ? “Just a little more”.

If money motivates these guys to play their best – then let them play for it. I don’t care how much they have – just that they’re putting out their best effort.

Ain't That Cute...

…after a half a century of being the Charmin Team of the NFL, Saints fans talking trash.

For you football fans in the UK: if the NFL in America had relegation like the Premiership, New Orleans would be roughly equivalent to Swindon Town or Bradford City.

They wear padding and helmets

and the game takes too long. Give me Rugby any day. 80 minutes of action, offence and defence are the same 15 players barring subs.

Hey Charles.......After 44 years

I have a 15 minute window to talk trash, and you want to give me a hard time….hmmm. I have some red neck friends who would break your legs for that comment….:)

Seeing as how the Saints are in the NFC South w/ my Panthers

You know I have to get my digs in.

If y’all were the doormats, Carolina is the grime. We’re even worse than NO!

(ps if they can, and don’t draft Andrew Luck, I am done with the Panthers.)

by Charles Boyer on Dec 30, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Charles, Don't feel bad about the Panthers

being worse than NO……as of February 2010, 30 other teams were also worse! Gotta luv it. Who Dat!

Also....I DID Root For NO in the Super Bowl

All the way through the playoffs actually. Warms my heart to see your fans finally have a good team after all those years. As an NC State man living within 20 miles of Duke and UNC, I know how it feels.

A small point of order here

I supported The Saints to their magnificent Super Bowl win. (I considered it a “twinning” arrangement with Southampton).

Yes, it was a small point...

Now, how are yur gunners taking all their defeats ? like gentlemen I hope…Hey, did I see where Rooney got some kind of award ? jist askin…..STUB

a draw against Wigan – no defeats. We all know what kind of award Rooney would get – but it wasn’t an OBE, OK?

I was just correcting my mistake, he collected 72 millions "off" course..

2.2 playing golf.. I like the sound of “collecting” 72 millions ;-) it’s like a due to his hightness Woods ( I am bit ashamed there, for I was a debt and tax collector (don’t really know the equivalent of that profession in english) for 10 years..:-( )
No open bar but serious sun burns after spending yesterday sailing, i am still fuming..:-)

You were sailing? I knew there was somthin about ya I

liked…..I been looking at Hallberg Rassy 62 now for a couple a months,.,..Want to do some world cruising before I goes up stairs….I wouldn’t even need a crew….the way those boats are now, a single good hand could do ……I need to reconfiger the interior a bit…ould need more freezer space, and a good fresh water maker……Up grade the engine to a 250 hp Valvo dezel….I want to go to Sweden to oversee the construction….should take about 12-14 mos….than sail that sucker to Singapore and surprise the hell out of Chip….One there, slide up north and knock on Wend;ys and Easys doors…..just somethin I been thinking about since my wife passed….hell, a man has to do something besides chase women, drink and smoke good cigars…..Ahh yes sweet thing..I wil hav another a them Martinis….3 olives and a twist…That’s right honey,,, not the dance, a rind of lemon…..Gswd, it’s great to see things come together when ya train them sweet young things right…..STUB

she's a beauty!!

For a world cruse, won’t you consider a catamaran instead? My dad owns a Catana 47 and she’s quite easy to handle wihtout crew. More space (means more ladies to entertain at anchor..) faster so you can get away from bad weather ( and spend more time entertaining the laydies at anchor..). The only trouble would be to find a place in a port during summer in mediterranean sea..my favorit best would be the Gunboat 62. Lagoon make some very interesting boats too, at reasonable prices. Alas, when I was saying sailing, I meant a hobie cat 16 for that’s all that available in cambodia…still fun and fast if it wasn’t for the back aches i got now..

No Saint....I still haven't settled, but think of 3 I want...The

Rassy, a Pasport 62, or a Outbound 58….No catamaran..I don’t want twin hulls….I want to confine the ladies to one, so I don’t have to chase them so far….hahaha…..The way these boats are all push button today, 1 person does everthing from the cockpit…never needs to go on deck even……Well, it’s something I got in the back of my head….My son thinks I have really lost it….Wanted to know if I would take a competancy test….I said sure, as long as I got to grade it….STUB

lol. I am not a fan of too much push buttons help..

those things break easy and you find yourself helpless to repear them without help. there are so many parts you already have to have as spares for a long travel…I’d say navigation systems have to be top notch, after that…some lime, a freshly caught fish and a few bottles of white wine…Where do you sail to from Florida? (you’re boat is in Florida right?)

ah – I see now !

so, to bring the point down to our level – we’re playing a $5 nassau with our regular group of buddies, or a dots game or a skins game or whatever your group likes to play – because you make $50k or $75k or $100k a year, there is no effort to win such a small pot against your friends ?

sure..I don't see where you're going there. I didn't express myself

correctly for sure..I consider the 72 millions as royalties (that’s why I called him his highness by the way..) for his great work in previous years…Now you said "let them play for money if they put their best effort into it…and I agreed and said that Tiger didn’t put much of an effort this year with only a pot of 2.2 millions…nothing much to argue about really…:-)

Some won't

they are quite happy to collect their few million a year. Can’t blame them in a way. But sportsmen have to give 100%.

by Easingwold on Dec 30, 2010 3:30 AM EST up reply actions

Being rich

will make some pros comfortable enough not to give their best. If that pro’s main aim is playing for money, there will come a time when he thinks he has made it and naturally will ease off. The ones that play for titles, don’t know how to ease off. They quit when they are beat into the ground and call it a day then…and not before.

Any man who cheated on his wife so wantonly, willingly and most importantly as often as Mr. Woods did probably never assigned a great value to his family in the first place.

I think Tiger may feel worse for the damage he caused his reputation and net worth more so than losing his wife.

Why do you think Woods being no 1 at the bank is ‘’where it counts’’?

i'll bet that 72 million will be half as much when he does not win a tournament in 2011.

On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

how much of that goes to the ex wife or was it a lump sum payment?
