After record 600 rounds, Dallas golfer is still playing

December 27 -- The day before notching his 600th round of golf for the year, Richard Lewis wondered if he would ever feel warm again. The Dallas golfer, who was slated to play a world-record 600th round on Sunday for charity, followed his 36th hole on a rainy, blustery, and frigid Christmas Eve with four hours in a hot tub and dry sauna and was still chilled.

“I felt pressure to make the 600th [goal] on Sunday, so I had to play Christmas Eve in the rain,” Lewis said in a phone interview from the 14th tee of his first 18 Monday. With golfers slated to donate $1,000 each to the First Tee of Dallas for the honor of playing with him during his historic round, Lewis teed off in 38-degree temperatures with a wind chill of 26 so he could make the deadline. “It was totally miserable. I thought I was going to die.”

Star-divide

The weather didn’t get much better for his record-setting 18 holes, though at least it wasn’t raining. For sure, a little wind and cold was hardly up to the task of stopping the 64-year-old retiree from making the Guinness Book of World Records -- and more to the point, of raising money for the First Tee.

“People put up a lot of money to play the 600th with me so I couldn’t let the First Tee down,” Lewis said. Members donated some $9,000 to the organization, which uses golf to teach youngsters about integrity and responsibility.

Lewis lay claim to the world’s “Most Avid Golfer” title by playing and walking the most rounds ever in a calendar year. A member of the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, Lewis carries his bag and speeds along at a 2.5-hour clip for 18 holes (add another hour if he’s part of a walking foursome). Barring an unforeseen snow storm or lightning, he’ll finish his 611th round on New Year’s eve.

“The last time I didn’t play 18 holes was March 21, when it snowed,” Lewis said.

That should show his former colleagues, who scoffed when Lewis announced after retiring last year that he planned to play golf daily. “‘You’ll get bored,’ they said,” Lewis recalled. “But I love the game. Everyday’s a different day and every shot’s a different shot.”

Lewis did not set out to break any records; he just wanted to play everyday. Lewis said he “got behind the 8-ball” after an unusual eight inches of snow closed the course in February and March. To make his target, Lewis had to ratchet up his play, walking 36 and sometimes 54 holes a day just to catch up.

It wasn’t until a fellow member wondered about the record for playing the most golf that Lewis learned it was 586. So he rearranged his goals and decided to go after 600. He played his record-setting 587th hole on December 19.

At the start of the year, Lewis would stay off the course if the weather were too cold, rainy, or just plain bad. “That was in January and February, before I went totally insane and decided I was going to do this,” he said.

Since then, he has walked about 2,500 miles, clubbed some 50,000 shots, and lost 33 pounds. He consumes protein shakes and pizza three times a week to keep his weight up. His girlfriend, Debbie Shaw, wasn’t too sure about his sanity when he began his quest but has since backed him up “100 percent,” Lewis said.

A summertime 3-handicapper on a challenging course that hosts the PGA Tour’s annual HP Byron Nelson Championship event, Lewis has watched his GHIN index inch up to about 6 with the tougher off-season greens. As for so-called “winter rules,” no way. “We play the ball down all year long,” Lewis said.

Lewis was understandably proud of his accomplishment but he figured he’d slack off in 2011. “I’ll play on nice days but not on horrible days and during storms,” he said. “I figure I can get 400 rounds in next year.”

That’s pretty cool – I think Eas and Wendy should go after the record next year…you know…world tour kind of thing…just to make it fair and all. :-)

But if he didn’t have the Guinness Book in mind, how did he get behind his goal ?

I do admire the charity push by Richard Lewis

But I haven’t the time…still gotta work. Anyway about 100 rounds a year is more than enough for any golfer. he might hate the game after this effort :)

he’s quoted in the article saying that he loves the game. I wonder if he’ll do it again in 2011.

ok

enough for me. If I played 3 rounds a week it might feel like work…as much as I love the game.

that’s better – but I’ll keep watching you and try to help you join the freedom loving people of the world who don’t like having someone tell them how much of anything is enough or too much. :-D

and who knows ? if you had the time and the inclination, you might WANT to play every day the course was open. This guy got to retire and do what he loves for a year. Good for him.

Now you are telling me what I would do if I had the time :)

Good for him, as you say. But playing everyday, I reckon his game would get worse. Quality, not quantity mate. Do you want to break 80, playing and practicing, or shooting 90 getting tired of it all and developing bad habits ?

by Easingwold on Dec 27, 2010 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

telling you what to do…ok…if you leave out that “MIGHT” from what I said…

I grew up going to the batting cage by myself and playing baseball games 3 to 5 times a week. I would love to have a big chunk of money in the bank that would give me enough time to hit balls every day and play as often as I wanted. I would love to have the time to see how good I could get. Sure, there’s a lot of work to do, but you get to spend time with your golf buddies and meet new people as you go, too.

It would be great to have the time

But have you noticed the best need a break from time to time ? Then you get the marathon men who play 40 weeks a year. It would be easy to lose that important enthusiasm. More is not usually better, but time is needed to improve.

by Easingwold on Dec 27, 2010 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

true enough – but just because you CAN play every day doesn’t mean you HAVE to play every day. Don’t forget the forced days off for weather – days off just because you want – family time.

This guy just retired and decided this was what he wanted to do for this year. You’re making it sound like he retired from work and this is a new career for him.

I would play twice a day,

every day. As it is, I usually get in 200+ rounds a year. If these freakin doctors don’t figure out what is wrong with me, I may be done. Guess I’ll have to take up computer golf…..that sucks.

I like a bit of gardening too.

Not to mention a good meal out. These things can’t be done if one spends their time at a golf club 6 days a week. there is only so much time we have on this earth.

Anymore would feel like work and a bit obsessive. Too many other chores/hobbies to play more often anyway.

Agreed Wendy.

I put it this way..I’d rather play little and score well than a lot and score worse than I do. I think we get stale mentally if we play too often.Hope you had a Happy Christmas.

All of that is fine for what you two would want to do – and nobody has said that Lewis didn’t do other things this year…or what he wants to do going forward. Apparently his wife was behind him playing all this golf this year since they are still married.

You’re making value judgements on thigs guy’s life without knowing anything other than he played 600 rounds of golf this year and had it as a goal. They guy just retired from who knows how many years doing whatever it is he did and this is what he wanted to do for a year.

Cmon court

Anyone can see what he is doing is a one off. He won’t do it again. I was replying more to your post “That’s pretty cool” and thinking we would all like to try something simular. Most wouldn’t IMO. What he did takes some effort, but it can’t relate to us casual golfers. No one in their right mind would want to play 36 holes a day , every day. Now…if you want to break the record one day, go for it mate !

by Easingwold on Dec 28, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ok – so we need to take a poll – how many of us in here would or wouldn’t love to have a year to play as much golf as we could ? Remember – this was as much golf as he could play for one year.

How about this ? If you could have a year to do as much of any one thing you could – what would it be ?

What makes you think Lewis isn’t a casual golfer in any other year than this one ?

I’m wondering how many courses he played over the year. Playing one course would definitely get a little old.

Damn..posted that before I finished :)

I think if I had a full year off, I’d travel all over the world, playing all the top courses, Pine valley, Pebble beach, Royal Melbourne, Valderama, etc etc. if I could afford it. Now that is the quality I am talking about. I could easily play 600 rounds instead locally but it wouldn’t be the same thing. That would be a marathon that this man needs to do to play the most rounds in a year.

by Easingwold on Dec 28, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Ok – that sounds like a lot of fun – and you had to put your affordability caviate on it. What if you had to do something you could afford there at home ?

(to be honest – that’s my “win the lottery” dream. everything either gets stored, sold, or given away – move to Vegas to take lessons at Butch Harmon’s place, play a lot of poker, and get in shape – then hit the road around the world – could be several years before I get home)

lol – not AT home – but where you live – your town – your neighborhood – your county…whatever. Or, it COULD be “at home” – Wendy wanted to garden – maybe a dream of hers would be to turn her back yard into one of those great English gardens we see pictures of in books and movies. Doesn’t matter what you think would be fun to do given a year to do it – it’s your thing to do.

I'm a professional garden designer, Court

but my garden is not large enough to feature in films – nor do I want it to.

I think the article said that Lewis played two courses ad infinitum.

by WendyUK on Dec 28, 2010 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

it was just an example, Wendy. I had no idea you were a garden designer – that’s pretty cool. (of course, you’d either hate me as a client…or love me. hate me for killing all your hard work – or love me because you’d be constantly billing me to replace the plants I had killed) :-D

hmm – two courses for 600+ rounds – doable – but I’d want some more variety. I guess once he really got going, the courses helped him out with early tee times so he could play fast and get at least one round in around 3 hours, then have plenty of time for another 18 and still have time to take the wife out for a nice meal.

To do 600 rounds in 1 year

everything else in his life would have to take 2nd place. That is why it is a one off. Yes, He can take out his wife for a nice meal. She will understand his goal and put aside what she wants for the year and support him. As the year has gone on, he will get tired. It will become a chore, but it is a goal and he is determined. Once the year is over, he will want a long break from the game and take his wife on a well deserved holiday. What you are saying is that it would be great to have the chance to do what he did. 99 out of 100 wouldn’t do 400 rounds, never mind 600. Most would do 200. That is still 4 rounds a week…and a lot at that. No one said what he did was a bad thing. But to play that much in one year is something no one here would do…unless they wanted to break the record.

by Easingwold on Dec 29, 2010 5:04 AM EST up reply actions

365 days in a year – figure 30-40 days where the course is closed for weather or just unplayable because of weather. That leaves 325-335 days. MOST, he’ll be playing at least 36. He said he plays in 2.5 hours if he’s not playing in a foursome or behind slow players. That means he can get in 36 holes in 6-8 hours or less on most days – maybe even 54 on a fast day in another hour. That leaves 16 or 17 hours giving him 30 minutes of travel time each way…but I’ll bet he lives there)

SO there is time during the day for home and wife – and there are days in the year to take the wife out or a weekend trip or to entertain friends and family who come to town. He wasn’t playing golf, then eating and going to bed.

Yes – it’s a huge committment – but, as the article says, he made it a goal as his first year of retirement.

He lost 60 days to snow

that leaves 300 days to play…take out the weekends, that leaves 250 days. Even if he did play 36 holes in 8 hours sometimes, others it probably took 10. When he had to play 54 holes, he would be out on his feet. It would be interesting what he does in the new year. I reckon he’s earned a month off.

by Easingwold on Dec 29, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

60 days to snow…in TEXAS ? Where did you get that ? The snow in February and March wasn’t on the ground for two months, regardless of what that sentence says. They had a number of snows, but in the south, it lasts a few days then its gone.

And why are you taking out the weekends ?

somehow I doubt the wife is going to give him a month off – he had his year. :-D

He said the course was closed for 2 months

If I can’t believe what the sentence says, then why was it printed ? And you took out the weekends, albeit in your take on his family life. You might be right about the wife….she might take him shopping for a year to get her own back !

the article (not the post) says…

• Has played as many as 54 holes in a day

• Starts his daily round at 7:30 a.m. and his second round three hours later

• Missed playing on 19 days because of sleet or below-freezing temperatures

• Has to eat at least one pizza a day and drinks lots of protein drinks each week to keep weight on

(by the way – be careful of that link – there are a lot of things that keep trying to download and a LOT of hidden links and cookies – that’s a potentially dangerous site that Emily is writing for)

which is why most of my posts mention those subjects.

I do have a love/hate relationship with some clients along the lines you mention!

According to Ryan B. on ProGolfTalk, Lewis played only Las Colinas & “another course in Dallas”. Might have been pretty difficult to get in 600 rounds if more travel had been involved?

as I am proving as I type. Too old to keep that pace up these days. Unfortunatly, I was averaging over 10 a day for a few years in my youth. Don’t want that again. Diet time soon :)

by Easingwold on Dec 27, 2010 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

you and me both – gotta lose some of this tonage.

you’re not saying that IF you have a pint, you HAVE to drink a bunch of pints, are you ? Walk 18 holes a day and have a pint or two…not a pint or ten. :-)

After a round

I have 1 pint at most if I’m driving. 2 if I’m not. I do well to have 8 these days on a night out. Not had one for a while. But 30 years ago 15 was common on a good night…big boys never grow up :)

by Easingwold on Dec 27, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

LOL – never been a big drinker myself – a couple of beers is a big night for me. I had to be careful in Scotland when I learned about the tradition of buying rounds for the whole table and the trouble you can get into if you don’t buy your round, or getting made fun of if you declined someone buying a round. I had to buy early in the evening.

S-j – do you make sure your masseuse really IS a masseuse ? :-D

It was nothing to be proud about

But the round culture you described is a big deal in the Navy. We would go in 4’s or more…4 rounds each was a common thing.

by Easingwold on Dec 28, 2010 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

You weren’t doing that every night, were you ? I guess you built up quite a tolerance.

Averaged 10 a night.

I had tolerance to beer, but others probably didn’t tolerate me and my mates that much. And they were right.

by Easingwold on Dec 28, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

you don't drink while playing then?

At the Buaya club, some members are representants of several beer companies and they always try to cheat us into getting drunk during tournaments…problem is, asians can’t hold their liquor quite like we can..can be messy sometimes.. :-)

lol – nope – not much of a drinker during rounds either. A beer once in a blue moon during a scramble. I don’t need any extra diuretics drying me out when I sweat so much as it is.

sure. You're from Louisiana right? it's kind of the same weather

we have here, hot and humid. I found gatorade to be a great drink during hot rounds. I do not perspire as much as if i was drinking water.

True Dat – it’s not nearly the steam machine in Atlanta that much of Louisiana is.

I hope the Falcons play better than Ga Tech is playing today against Air Force. This is horrible. Missing 6 starters and 4 more were suspended for a half. Nope – interception – Air Force is going to win.

Court......

When I lived in Denver, I went down to the Academy for a couple of AF games and they were a fun team to watch……wide open offense….can’t remember who the coach was then…..Fisher DeBerry, I think.

they looked pretty good today. fun to watch two teams who play similar, but non-pro-style offenses play each other. unfortunately, Tech didn’t have anybody who could catch a punt on the field.

Ga Tech has one of the better baseball programs in the country. Unfortunately, they almost always get into the playoffs for the college world series and find ways to get beat – never getting to Omaha.

oops – sorry – the final rounds of the College World Series are played in Omaha, Nebraska every year. It’s one of the greatest weeks of the baseball year.

thanks.

I am reading on College World Series right now. It’s pretty big!! Nothing as such in Europe. Never heard of College sports there anyway. Hight school baseball in Japan was something huge, but never heard of college baseball though. I guess the guys that are good enough to play major league after HS don’t go to college there.

I already gived it to her, but here it is

again….You make a Tempura batter….thick….add 1/2 bottle/can of beer….Peel off the outer leaves, and marinate over night in the frig….Dee[p fry in 350 degree peanut oil for about 4-5 minutes….absolutely delicious….you can also do this for horses doofers to go with the Martinis…..Ah yes sweet thang,,,,I’ll have another…3 olives and a twist….no honey, a twist is a lemon peel, not the dance……Ahhhhh, the things I go through to train the young ones…..STUB

I would love to play right now...but...

playing one handed in the snow wouldn’t be very satisfying.

as it is it takes me about 2-3 minutes to type this much 1 handed.

So have you decided to do any kind of swing training without a club ? Or one handed drills ? Conditioning ?

No, No Easy...What Court is suggesting, is that

you and Wendy, go after the record for playing in the coldest weather….If Lewis did it in 38 degrees,,, than you and Wendy take your Whiskey flask along, and play in 30 degree weather, with winds about 30 miles an hour to make it feel like 10 degrees or so….you get one concession….you can refill the flask fter every 3rd hole…..Course, it might end up as hit the ball, drag Wendy, hit the ball, drag Wendy….STUB

Yup, they can be gotten at Victorias Secret,

and I,is partial to the yellow ones, as they go so good with a winter tan….True story…..I was at my place in Hwaii a year ago, and one morning I went to the beach….most folks don’t know this, but there are no Private beaches in Hawaii…..Anyone can go to any beach……Well, here come two well endowed young ladies, and they put their stuff down, about 4 feet from me and a bit to my right…..they than proceded to untie the tops and lay down…..I stood about 5 minutes of that, when I said in my most innocent voice….I hire out to rub the lotion on backs…..They both rolled over, and of course knew that they gave me a wonderful view…..said what did I charge?

One thing led to another, and I found out one lass was from Australia, studying to be a doctor, and the other from Canada, but also going to college….They said that after all the years of straight schooling, they were a bit burned out and needed a break….Well, no amount of bribes induced them back to my Apt (damm it)….but they were working as Waitresses…..They said that it was well known among college students, that you could have a great time and make good money doing that in Hawaii, and yes, it was trre….
They both worked at a placed called Bubba Gumps, just down the road, and said I should stop in and they would take care of me…..I asked again if they couldn’t take care of me right there, and All I got was more giggling…..The upshot was I went to Gumps about 3 nights later, and when I inquired of the ladies, i was told that they were on the floor, but they said If I came in to take me to the Employees table…..I had one hell of a time, and every one of the kids was on break from some University….All the girls flirted with me, and the guys laughed and wanted to know what some of the OLD PICKUP LINES were…..a great time…..Those young ladies and some others, came to our beach every day for lthe next couple of weeks…I even fixed them some Fish dinners a couple of times when I wen’t to the dock and bought the days catch….Seeing I was alone, as my partner had passed away befor that, it made my stay a whole lot better……STUB.
