Golf’s hot stove season: Twitter rumor mill churns about Tiger Woods’ torn Achilles

December 21 -- On a slow news day, what better way to fan the flames of golf’s hot stove season than to stoke a Twitter rumor that Tiger Woods had shredded his Achilles tendon? Again.

The speculation remained at a dull roar after TV producer and media consultant Judith Coleman offhandedly tweeted Monday night. “Quite a rumor that someone in the golf world has torn his achilles,” she tweeted under the handle @heyjude66. “Hmmm...”

Hmmm, indeed. That little nugget lay there for several hours, until Sports Illustrated’s Alan Shipnuck picked up on it -- or another one -- Tuesday morning with this tweet: “Rumor alert: I’m hearing some buzz that Tiger Woods may have injured an Achilles tendon. IMG is not confirming or denying. Stay tuned.”

And the cyber rumor mill was churning at full blast.

Star-divide

Tiger fans will be relieved to know that it appeared to be nothing but hooey, as @TigerWoods supplied a photo of himself testing his new EA video game.

Or did he? Perhaps it was Tiger’s stunt double filling in for the injured No. 2, or an old photo. You know, to throw inquiring minds off the scent. Nah, probably not.

In any case, the Twitter lines lit up like the cyber version of the kids’ game, “Telephone.” USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio filled in many of the holes with tweet after tweet:

“Buzz on Tiger rumors he hurt his Achilles tendon? He shot EA Sports commercial this morning, is hitting golf balls this afternoon.

“IMG's Mark Steinberg confirmed TW is fine; that he shot EA Sports spot and is hitting balls today ... and did so yesterday and will tomorrow

“Further proof that TW is fine is supplied by TW as he tweets shots from his EA Sports shoot. @TigerWoods”

Finally, the definitive word came from on high. “Have talked to two people in Tiger's camp who say he hasn't been skiing in 3 years,” tweeted the Associated Press’ Doug Ferguson.

The only actual news to come out of all that Twitter chat was that Woods received a cortisone shot in his ankle, according to his IMG agent, Mark Steinberg.

Woods planned to get the shot after the Chevron World Challenge in early December, according to the AP. "This was always the plan," Steinberg told the news organization. "He's looking at 2011 as a big year for him."

Steinberg responded to Twitter noise that his client had ruptured his Achilles while skiing, an activity Steinberg said Woods hasn’t participated in for more than three years.

Woods’ right Achilles tendon, which he ripped in December 2008 while rehabbing from knee surgery, continues to cause some pain, Steinberg noted.

Oh, well, false alarm -- unlike last year at about this time. Back to work.

wow – more OLD old news. Tiger talked about this months ago. The torn achilles was a slight tear that slowed his ability to practice.

here’s a link to a story from way back in April….geez.

achilles tears don’t heal without rest or surgery – he hasn’t given it either one.

you’re putting your faith in someone on Twitter to give you news ?

As much as you insult the traditional media, I fail to see how you think that Twitter could be much worse.

by Charles Boyer on Dec 22, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

you make a good point – but at least a fair amount of the “traditional” media at least go on site to get their information – not Twitter.

A lot of traditional media are on Twitter and also have direct sources as well. And far be it from ESPN, or Fox News, or any other trad-med outlet to eacho rumors.

lol – “trad-med” – you may have invented a new term that could catch on !

I heard the rumors that Mickelson would play as an omnivorous right handed in 2011..

That the PGA asked Fowler to cut his hair but he refused and asked for sponsor exemptions on the LPGA…they accepted (Jimenez was disregarded for some unknown reasons)…That JD was seen in monaco alongside his new outfit designer Karl Lagerfeld…That Dustin Johnson is now allergic to sand and that he might put a halt to his career and get treatments…That Jim Furyk wants to revamp his unothodox swing and asked Charles Barkley to help in the process…Do any of you know if those rumors are true? ;-)

Seems he had cortisone injected in the achillis

Someone said Woods is in his prime. Looks like he is falling to bits.

by Easingwold on Dec 22, 2010 5:05 AM EST reply actions

my cousin had a torn achillis when he was playing pro handball..

apparently you can’t walk with a torn achillis and it’s very painfull. It took him a year after surgery to play again but he never was a 100% after that. I don’t think Tiger has the same problem or it’s a minor injury.

I didn't tear mine

but it stretched pretty bad. Years later at 33 I had scar tissue on it…When I went to the physio I ran on the treadmill for a few minutes. I got told I had been running over on one side because of the injury. A year later, my calf tore slightly. Same problem. Once an achilles goes things are never the same again.

by Easingwold on Dec 22, 2010 7:15 AM EST up reply actions

And do you know why?

Well, let me tell you why…..That Achilles was a warrior in the Old Roman days, and not a muscle at all….Someone, probably a woman, just slapped a name to it…..When you were running to one side, did you LIST any? jis askin……STUB

Tiger Woods Fans.

Note to Emily: In case you haven’t noticed, this this home to some of the most verbose Tiger detractors you’ll find on one blog. Given a chance to poke a stick in Tiger’s eye, they’ll do it every time,,,Then they’ll tell you it’s because the “media” favor him. Gotta beleive some of these “good ol boys” might have a white sheet in their closet.

by pingforever on Dec 22, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions

Now now Ping...poke a stick in his eye?

well guess he deserves that, right? Right? Oh, forgot, yur one a them TW butt kissers…White sheet ? nah, switched to colored years ago….It’s not Tiger per se, jist what he represents, and all the drool slathered on him by the media and GC….Common now, wasn’t it peaceful in 2010 now hearing the Tiger drum beat all year, and listening to the tunes of the other players ? It’s OK, we will support ya anyhoooo…..May the goast of Christmas past be with you…..STUB

Ping

I really think you’re way off base with that. Yes, there are plenty of Tiger detractors around here, but for the most part I’d say they’re pretty fair about it. There are after all good reasons to dislike Tiger. I’ll take my friends here on this blog over the bunch of TGC “gentleman” any day of the week.

Oh joy, Ping is back

Well I can see that while you’ve been away, your dementia has progressed substantially. So, Tiger detractors are “good ol boys” with white sheets in their closet?? hmmm…..that’s great. If you don’t like TW, you’re a racist. Got any other gems of wisdom you’d like to share?? I guess that bicycle accident where the 18 wheeler ran over your head was worse that we thought. Merry Christmas from me and my white sheet(s)…..I have several, gotta stay busy….:)

What A Load Of S*** Ping, Really.

You deserve prize for what is perhaps the biggest example of a non sequitur logical fallacy combined with an ad hominem attack:

Tiger’s detractors will] tell you it’s because the "media" favor him. Gotta beleive some of these "good ol boys" might have a white sheet in their closet.

So anyone who doesn’t like Tiger Woods is a racist, and a perhaps a member of the KKK?

Give me a f’n break.

Charles,

Ping is an agitator. He came over here a year ago, but grew bored because the dialog here was mostly civil and bloggers actually liked each other, so he went back to TGC. Now he’s back and obviously picking up right where he left off. As I said….Joy.

My Tolerance For That Will Grow Short

This is a great community full of knowledgeable and intelligent folks who can give and take and not hurl calls of racism and of s*** like that. I won’t let that be spoiled, much less by one person.

Mr. Ping will go on notice after one more stunt like the one above and if he fails to heed that warning the ban hammer will be deployed with weapon’s safeties disarmed.

Come on man. You have to realize that coming on here and dropping a ridiculous bomb like that completely unprovoked is WAY out of line. It’s exactly the kind of thing I’ve seen you criticize others for doing. Your better than that!

Good point TH

TGC has been routinely criticized for deletions…by several of the “regulars” here. Now I better understand why there’s so little in the way of opposing opinions here. It’s amusing that several of the people who post here will go over to the GC blog and spew bile you don’t see here….Sort of a Jekyll & Hyde event. It’s comical really, I’ve never been a fan of Woods but I recognize his preeminent position in professional golf and the reasons for it. As far as my “ridiculous bomb”….. Never try to teach a pig to sing, you’ll do nothing but annoy the pig and frustrate yourself. Thanks for your response.

yep Ole Pingaling is at it again.

leave that trash talk and racist remarks over @ TGC where it belongs. You in good company over there. Pings a closet tiger fan, but wont admit it. Whole lotta back peddling after the 2010 season I see. LOLOLOLO

Jumpnjive right???

Stay over here where no one will disagree with you…. LOL, LOL, LMAO. “Flatulence is the sound of gas leaving the body”. Go with that, it’s more appropos… I’m luvin’ it… You could have scored some style points if you’d said “back pedalling” missed opportunity. BTW, there’s freedom of speech over at TGC. I will admit sometimes it’s ugly, but so is censorship.

Ping

Speaking only for myself, posters here disagree with me PLENTY, and I’ve been know to express my disagreement with them as well. That’s OK. The point is it can be done respectfully with a little class; that’s what’s missing at TGC. Name calling and personal attacks are simply not needed.

em....

You already broke your “ignore” rule…. uncivilized and red necked (or racist) we are……is there a name for someone like that??….. That would be “em66”…. The difficulty you guys have is you see opposition as provocation. Take away LOL and your vocabulary is reduced by at least a third…..

Wow, that's great to know.....I would have guessed half.....go figure.

Speaking of “third”…..your third grade humor has not improved…..it shouldn’t be long before you give us the ole Pee Wee Herman…..“I know you are, but what am I”.

Give us all a great present and crawl back under the GC rock. Merry Christmas.

I’ve got a lot more creativity and intelligence than to quote Pee Wee or to continually use that trite LOL, LMAO stuff. Like a teenage girl putting SWAK on the back of a letter…. Those little punctuation emoticons….same thing… Although while some prefer parodies of Moliere, I’m still partial to f*rt jokes… Hope you understood the asterisk, don’t want to upset your delicate sensibility..

Well Pingaling

If ya dont like waggleroom or the people in it, you should simply get on your tricycle and head on over to TGC or tigerwoods.com.

Jumper:

You’re probably right. This isn’t a good fit. You being a pompuos, self absorbed “country clubber” and your buddy em66 a closet ra*ist. I know what kind of effort it takes to play a round of golf. Do you have any idea what it takes to ride a bicycle for 100 Km? Maybe you can e-mail the moderator of this site and plead for my deletion in the style Of Henry II, “can anyone rid us of this troublesome pingforever”. em: “crawl back under the GC rock” That’s positively PeeWee Hermanesque. And that disingenuous “Merry Christmas”…..that’s almost sacrilegious, shame on you!

Good night boys…..

Charles it's time to put Ping to rest me thinks.

He’s a long time groveling trouble maker and shyyt stirrer. He always brags about how far he can ride his bicycle while wearing his spandex to tight and then slings insults to anyone that doesn’t agree with him. LOL He and many others. Calling em66 a racist in a public forum is not acceptable in my opinion.

ping.....I truly hope you are not

as alone at home as you are on this blog. You really are sad…..it must stink to be you. As for the bicycle thing…..doesn’t take much talent to pedal….my 5 year old grandson can do that. Someone mentioned a few weeks ago that it is sometimes hard to recognize subtle humor in the posts and comments. It’s not so hard to recognize your jealousy and vindictiveness from your childish insults. Enjoy your bike rides and may all your tires go flat.

I’ve been reading this blog for some twelve months and posting regularly for more than six. I also post on another not quite so civilised site. The difference between here and there, is that in WR, you can have a difference of opinion and get quite heated with it, but without the schoolyard BS of the other. It’s called being adult.
Sounds like someone here needs to grow up just a little.
