Mickelson to Start His 2011 in Dubai

Phil Mickelson usually starts his golf season with a bit of desert golf, and he plans to do just that in 2011.  Next year, however, he'll be in Dubai for his first shots in battle, rather than beginning his year playing at the Bob Hope Classic, an event he's won twice.

"This is the perfect time [for me to go to Dubai]," Mickelson said. He added that he's looking forward to great weather for practice, and that he's taking the whole family and swing coach Butch Harmon as well.

Mickelson's interests have been growing beyond strictly playing the PGA Tour and playing an exclusively American-based schedule.  He's been building golf courses and golf academies in China, and sees Dubai as another emerging hotspot for golf.  "I feel like there's an obligation as a player to try to bring the game to different parts of the world," Mickelson said. "The UAE, especially Abu Dhabi, and China seem to be our greatest growth opportunities."

After Dubai, Mickelson plans to play four straight events in the California swing starting at Torrey Pines, but he also commented that he's not certain if he will take part in the 2011 Accenture WGC Match Play Championship in late February.

Do you think Phil has had himself checked for diabetes ? Lines like these are really sickeningly sweet. What a guy – “we have an obligation to take the game to places around the world.” What a load of crap. This tournament has been around for a lot of years. Diplomat Phil isn’t taking anything anywhere…except maybe his wallet hoping to pick up a nice check…or maybe a nice oil well to invest in.

You did miss one interesting quote – Phil said “I do love how the warm sand feels squishing between my toes. Really helps this arthritis thing. I’m considering patenting it as a treatment. Watch the Home Shopping Network around Masters time next year for all the details. The infomerccial should be great !…oh…and it’s all for the children.”

Good on Phil !!!

He’s a self employed independent contractor doing what he should be doing. Making a good living and on most days, giving all of us golf fans “Free” entertainment.

Lefty paid his dues to PGA for 20 years

Doesn’t owe and explanation to anyone but himself and his family….

Actually – he’s not an independent contractor – he is a member of the PGA Tour and has to follow certain rules of that membership. One of those rules is that he has to notify the Tour offices when he plans to play somewhere off the reservation and get “permission” to do so. This came to light last year when Anthony Kim wanted to play several non-PGA Tour events during the PGA Tour season.

These guys are “independent contractors” only to the extent that they get to pick and choose under the umbrella of the PGA Tour.

The tour controls little court. Yes they have rules and most are not enforced. The tour understands that if not for ALL of the payers there would not be a tour at all. Are you saying Phil didn’t notify the tour this time ? Does he need permission to build a golf course anywhere in the world. Nope. """Diplomat Phil isn’t taking anything anywhere…except maybe his wallet hoping to pick up a nice check"""" ? Are you saying you don’t believe his statements court ? Calling Phil a Liar ?

BTW, I’m in Ireland, this is my third trip here in 5 years. The people are very welcoming and the hospitality is fantastic. Why we waisted 4 1/2 days in France is beyond me. One of the first things I saw at the airport in Ireland was a huge poster of Padraig Harrington and Rory Mcllroy standing side by side on a tee box that said, Success at any age can be accomplished. Don’t know who the ad was for though but I thought it was very cool.

I’m calling Phil a suck up, a politician, and a silver tongued devil. :-) He has no problem saying whatever fits his purpose for the occassion. I have no doubt that he’s a nice guy – but he’s also a master at platitudes.

The Tour has rules – if these guys want to play an event overseas when there is a PGA Tour event going on, they have to check in with the front office and get a note from Principal Finchem. They are allowed, I believe, three a year.

And you’re quoting only part of what I said. I also said that Phil isn’t taking anything to Dubai – the tournament has been there quite a few years. It’s not new.

where did u play in france?

Not a great golf destination (in november nontheless!!), unless you go south..still it’s expensive for what they have to offer. Should try Tunisia, Morocco or Portugal (great wines) :)

HOLY ROTTON TOMATOES Jump

I surly hate to GULP do this, but they took my shoes off and is gettin ready ta hold my feets to the fire, GULP Court is right about the status of the players as to being independent contractors…That designation is really for Tax purposes, …the players, and the Tours.

NOW- HOWSOMEVER Let me do an about face on the Rascal….In another blog he was flayin the hide offen poor Rory for speakin his mind in a blunt manner….Now, he is takin the whip to poor Phil for being a silver tounged devil….What I think, is that Court is having a hard time getting over the fact that he lost the captaincy of the debate team to someone else….But, as soon as football season is over, and his DAWGS settle for someplace past second best, and he can go on bashing the GC, all will be right with the world….Cheers, everbody and stay thirsty my friends….STUB

Time out there Stubbo – I did no such thing to po’ lil’ ol’ Rory. I commented on one statement he made that was a bit out of line and then I posted an apology AND an alternate article. I didn’t like Rory’s comment – and I didn’t like Phil’s oil slick of a statement. Seems pretty consistent to me.

And we’ll see how them Junkyard Dawgs do againt Auburn this weekend. :-)

If it was Tiger that made the same statements as Phil, that Court would not have made a peep.

How much is Tiger getting paid to play in Australia this year ?

Stubbo I have some bad news for ya...

I think I hear the “Fat Lady” warming up to sing her MW swan song. Currently through 16 holes in the Lorena Ochoa Open with 36 players in the field, Michelle Wie is in 35th place at +6 which is 15 shots off the pace of Kristie Kerr at -9.

Be that as it may, my attorney has

advised me to do 2 thins…ya kin sue me, or waits until after January 31st at Midnight….If ya sues, I’ll declare bankruptcy, and ifin ya waits, yur gonna get the good ol Texas Shrimps…I was even thinking of flying down with EM and having dinner with you and the BGF…all that after EM and I kick yur butt around the golf course…..Jist fantisy thoughts I was having whilst waiting for another Martini…..lol my friend, and stay thirsty…..STUB

Stubbo, you pushed up my pay off twice now.

LOL I don’t sue anyone, never have and certainly would not over a friendly bet thas was made in front of a jury of our peers. The season is over for MW and it’s time to pay your due. EM made a similar bet and offered to pay off the day he lost his portion. Because I don’t need any golf balls I told him to buy himself some rather then sending them to me. As far as our wager goes yes I want my 12 lbs of Gulf Shrimp as I am planning to be at my brothers house up in Maine for Thankgiving and I planned on bringing them with me. My Dad always taught me that a man is only as good as his word and I certainly kept mine with Wendy and Old Man Par sending them the prizes for the 2 contest I ran in here. I would expect as much from you. Fantasy thoughts aside, I would like to see them prior to Thanksgiving. Click on my picture and it will bring up my e mail for you to send me yours and I will give you the address to send them to.

oh please – in the deepest, darkest recesses of your imagination – do you REALLY think words like that would come out of Tiger’s mouth unless they were written for him in a commercial ?

beats me how much he’s getting – but I’ll bet it’s more than I make in….well….a lifetime. :-)

way too many questions..

asked to sportmen i think…i’d rather listen to them while they are playing (can learn a lot about golf) than all the crapolla pre-chewed interviews. I know that at stupid question, stupid answer and sport medias make a living out of that but i find sportmen interviews seldom interesting (in any sport and least of all soccer…my god those football players can live you in a awe… :) )

What??!!

No Mickelnuts this entire thread? When I saw the title of this post I thought for sure I’d get at least a few giggles. I guess I have to do the work myself today. :-)

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
