My Thanksgiving Wishes To You All...
Tomorrow is a major holiday here in the United States: Thanksgiving.
Basically, it's a day where we're supposed to remember just how good we have it in life. It's a day we take a pause and give thanks to our maker and to each for the good things in our lives, be they a successful harvest (the original idea behind the day) or our family, friends, jobs, whatever. Families will gather everywhere to (over) indulge in a traditional feast, maybe to watch sports on television, perhaps to lay plans for the coming Christmas season. All in all, it's a great day and one that's almost always enjoyable for all.
On this day, it's pretty easy to work golf into your thanks on Thanksgiving, some large, some small. Maybe you got your first and only hole in one this year. Give thanks for it. Perhaps you saved enough spare change to buy that driver you've been eyeing for a long time. That's reason to give thanks, don't you think? Maybe you got rid of your slice and finally hit a nice, long draw. If I were you, I would get on my knees and give thanks, very, very loudly.
Those are the little things, of course. For many of us, golf is a major part of our plans for the long weekend. Some of us will play tomorrow, as many courses will be open at least in the morning. Perhaps your regular foursome figured out a way to get an early round in before everyone heads off to their Thanksgiving feasts. Or maybe you'll play with a favorite uncle or not-seen-often niece or nephew. Maybe some of us will tee it up with our Dads for the only time of the year. If that's the case, definitely give thanks -- one should never take family for granted, as too many of us have learned over the last year. Scores and winning don't matter then -- just being together does.
I have a group of friends that I play with fairly regularly, and the jocularity and inside jokes can get intense out there. We know each other pretty well, and we know each other's games even better. There's Lucky Pierre, a guy who always seems to get a great bounce off of a tree or a cart path when he hits a wayward shot. There's Alice, the guy whose putts always seem to stop two inches from the cup. Until last year, I was The Squirrel, because I spent too much time scrambling in the woods looking for a sliced or hooked tee shot. I know some of the guys hated it when I finally put things together properly and quit hitting hard turning shots. Anyway, those are just the nicknames...the jokes and ribbing is endless. But they are jokes and nicknames made in good nature. We all want each other to do well...but we all want to be at least a stroke better than the other guy. We don't mind too much when we lose, though, it's only a dollar and wee bit of pride until next time. It makes for a fun day with good people. For those clowns, I give thanks, and more than I can possibly say here.
Really, at the end of the day, maybe that's the true point of golf: being together. A golf course is a wonderful place to catch up, to have fun, and to spend time together.
And for that, give thanks -- every time you tee it up.
Finally, I would like to give my thanks to each and every one of you that takes the time to come read my dribblings. I really appreciate that. I always appreciate every visit and I always love it when people take the time to comment on the subject at hand, even if it is to point out just how full of caca I am. I may not always be right -- ask my wife, it's actually quite rare -- but at least we're getting to spend time together and talk about something we love, ye olde game o' golfe. And for that I give thanks to you, and more than you can possibly imagine.
So, to sum up, have a great Thanksgiving everyone, and even if it is not a holiday in your country tomorrow, know that we'll be tipping a glass in your honor sometime during the day. If you are traveling, be safe and be patient. If you are golfing, hit 'em well. Most of all, no matter what, enjoy the day.
With kind regards,
Charles

Thanks Charles.
“Happy Thanksgiving” to you also. I’m up at my seasonal home in NH and some friends and I were suppose to play 18 today at http://wentworthbytheseacc.com/, but as New England weather goes its not going to happen. Steady winds at 20-25 MPH with gust to 45 MPH and its only 42 degrees. Looks like we are going to be Clubhouse bound and play a little Poker. Good Friends, Good Cheer and Happy Thanksgiving to you all @ waggleroom.com

Well my Gawd Charles
I was waitin for the tears ta come bustin out….You can give yur shorts a twist OL WENDY had a tear in her eyes too….But, ya, I do gotta agree…sit back, think a bit and give thanks for all ya and yurn got. Forget Tiger's year.....It's the ONE YEAR anniversary for several of us here on Waggle Room!
It’s been a fun year for me (and the others I’m sure) here at WR. I have so much to be thankful for that I can’t begin to put it all in this little box, so I’ll just say that I thank God daily for all that I have been blessed with. I hope that all of you have a great Thanksgiving, and to Easy…I am thinking about you and your family…may you somehow find Peace as you go through these difficult holidays.
It’s going to be 82 freakin degrees here today….. gotta luv it!!! (sorry Jumpn)
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
I know it's the 1-yr anniversary for certain posters
’cos I was trying to find the comment I made at that time when you lot arrived and 3irons and you thought I had given you a somewhat frosty reception. At the time I just meant to draw an analogy that it was like a local sitting in a saloon bar having a quiet drink, when the saloon door is kicked open and the gunfighters swarm in. I thought it was quite complimentary!
To all at WR, whether old hands, ex-GC or newbies, Ryan & Charles, you’re a really great bunch and I thank you for your company. To you and yours, I wish you the most enjoyable Thanksgiving and I will certainly raise a glass to your tomorrow.
NB em, – I thought it was quite unnecessary to mention your 82 degrees ;o) Here it was a frosty 40’s with a nasty wind chill factor and I chickened out of using my lovely new Ping irons which I took delivery of yesterday, ’cos my tiny hands were frozen.
WHAT ? A BRIT CHICKENIN OUT ?
You madam, just this minute, put on your 3 layers of clothes, grab your mittons and get out there…show the world what your made of….Stiff upper lip and all that harumpf stuff….If ya can’t get out, do like Easy done….take them to bed with you and fondle them thru the evening….Will get you to know them much better…..STUB
& your temperatures?
Had 4 layers, but it was the frozen hands & feet & runny nose wot done me in after 9 holes. Did shift 12 trugs full of fallen leaves this afternoon onto the compost heap however. Weather forecast says very cold week coming up, but after that never know what weather is going to be like. Will try to deter Easing from going out there this week, but perhaps he’s now become a hardened northerner as oppposed to my obviously soft southern ways. Brrr! Hugging radiator.
Well, easy to see why you were frozen
I bet you wern’t wearing “Lands End” stuff….They are on TV, always telling you that you can always feel your fingers and toes, no matter the temp.
And, if yur huggin the radiator now, what the heck ya gonna do when it REALLY gets cold….A balmy 76 here today, but expected to dip into the 40’s and stay there all Turkey day….Ha, just another gud reason to have the Martinis
Tell your better half, he gets to nap after dinner and before whiskey and cigars at 7..If you arrive at 9am, we shall comense the drinkin…..Ah, life is good….Hope Chip and Putt gets along good with MISS LAWLESS…..STUB
I went to the range today.
It was tough…but I know my lad would have wanted me to. If I continue to drink and mope around, he would have kicked me up the backside. I have been reading all your wonderful good wishes to my family at this tough time. Just popped on to let you all know how much we appreciate them. All the best to all of you…cheers again .
hEY easy....GRAB THE B/W and get yurself
ta my house…..Tomorrow we starts drinkin at 10 am sharp, with some horses doofers, more drinks, more doofers and more drinks….Wendy and better half will be here….Wendy is goona loosen her girde, so ya won’t want to miss that….Sit down dinner if the Turkey not to badly burned…..than back to more drinks/cigars about 7 for those still standing…..Love to have you my friend…..The best to you and family….We is here for you…..Did you read where that Wos Wendy was cold….gawd, such a whiner…..STUB
Good grief - I haven't been called a Wos
since I don’t know when. I was going to e-mail Easing that even if Jamie called him a wimp that this week was not the one to be going out in.
Amazing that your temperatures can dip from 76 to the 40’s in one week – unless you’re having a laugh at my expense.
Obviously when it really gets cold here, we’ll turn on the central heating. Now who’s the wos?
New Irons?!
I haven’t caught up on all of the threads…you got new pings??!!! This girl is jealous! Congrats! I can’t wait to hear about them. Happy Thanksgiving. ;-)
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
I bought the Ping Faith iron set, red (includes 2 hybrids)
Custom fitted too. Fascinating to see my strike pattern – & I know that you’ll empathise – I didn’t duff a single shot during the fitting – yahoo! So looking forward to trying them out on the course, but we’re in for a really really cold snap for the next week at least, so I’ll have to be patient. Any chance of treating yourself/being treated to some new gear for Christmas? Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
Sorry to hear about the cold snap…I hope you can get out soon to swing the new sticks! There is nothing better than new golf stuff to make a golfer happy! You will need to report in so we can hear how it went.
No new golf stuff for me this year – it was “home improvement year” so I’m pretending to be happy about new gutters and new windows. sigh (and when I say year I mean decade! I had no idea how expensive windows are.) I am hoping to take a quick winter trip someplace warm to play a few days in Feb/Mar.
YAY for new golf clubs!!
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
Home improvements - Hah!
Had new patio doors installed a couple of weeks ago – don’t fit – out by 10 mm apparently – argument coming up between manufacturers & local installers. Meanwhile gaps all around doors stuffed with newspaper during said cold snap. Best insulation known to hobos I believe. Had new windows fitted in utility room at same time – wrong pattern but at least fit. To hell with the gutters (so last year!) C’mon you irons!!!! You deserve Feb/Mar warm break, red!
Hey RED !!! can you believe it ?
Ol tight wad Wendy, (she that got her clubs regripped every 10 years due to cost) opened her purse, let the moths out and got some new tools….Her better half is still laughing and shaking his head over this one….ya gotta love it….another thought….maybe her game had gotton so bad she had to do somethin……STUB
He's only laughing
because the set he tried out on the driving range, (Cobra) whilst I was having my irons custom fitted, were on sale (practically half price) when we went back to pick them up – so he bought them.
Anyway, my grips don’t need changing as often as do certain old codger’s. ’Nuff said!
And to which Old Codger
would ya be refering to ?…STUB
Stub,
Wendy’s been waiting for so long for her “friendship dues” check from you that she finally had to buy them herself – you must owe her AT LEAST a new set of clubs for all the….love she gives you!

Noodle+'s for winter balls.
Hey Wendy – do you have Noodle balls over there ? I picked up a couple dozen Noodle+ balls to use this winter ($25 for two dozen) and played in mostly temperatures in the 40’s yestardday. They flew great and felt good around the greens on a cold day.

Never heard of them, Court
I’ll ask at my club – but frankly “my tiny hands are frozen” is more the problem – and I don’t trust those handwarmer gizmos – any recommendations anyone?
you mean warmers like these? I love ’em !

Maxfli Noodles
Yes, they are here also. Think I’ll get a chinese tonight…with egg noodles. And I’m supposed to be losing weight.
You said Maxfli Noodles – got me wondering. Dicks Sporting Goods bought the Maxfli name and kept the clubs, but stopped making balls. So I pulled out the box….no Maxfli anywhere. On the side of the outter box, though, is Taylor Made Golf. I had no idea TM bought the Noodle ball line. They’re made in Taiwan.

I've read about people getting burnt
by similar products. Sure I’ve still got some of them hanging around somewhere, but a bit nervous of using them. You’ve used them often enough to have confidence in them?
Not sure what you mean by confidence – they don’t explode. There are very few crappy golf balls out there anymore since solid core technology took over the industry. There are balls that don’t feel good to some people or don’t fit their game, but golf balls, for the most part, are very consistent these days. Unless you’re a very low handicap golfer who really compresses the ball, using a Tour ball is usually a waste of money. (personally, I’m not a fan of the Penta balls, but other people love them)
The Noodles ? I’ve used them on and off for 10 years. It’s a terrific ball – especially if you have a slow swing speed. (under 80 or 85 mph with the driver) I use them in cold weather because they are easier to compress. The Noodle+ that I used last weekend felt really good around the green, and after a few putts, they felt great on the putter.
Last year I used the Wilson Zip because a friend gave me a bunch of them – same idea – very soft ball. I gave them to people every time I played and 10 or 12 guys (all ProV1 players) switched to the Zip.
Buy a few sleeves of lower cost balls (Bridgestone E5 or 6, Wilson Zip or 50, Noodle or Noodle+, Top Flite makes several low compression balls, Precept Lady (I think it’s called the iQ plus)….you’ll get excellent performance and save a lot of money.

I think Wendy was talking about the hand warmers. :-)
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
DOH !!!!!!!!!!!!! these indents get confusing sometimes. thanks rt
Wendy – the ones in the link have been used for years by outdoorsmen here in the states. They usually last 4 or hours. I think they are safer than electric warmers that have a metal element. These just shake up and you just keep them in your pocket. They make some specifically for shoes, but I’ve seen people just put these small hand warmers inside their shoes and they worked fine.
