Westwood Tweaks Ailing Calf, Soldiers on at Dunhill Links

Coming off of a heroic performance at the Ryder Cup, Lee Westwood returned to brilliance after a six week layoff to mend a calf injury. This week, he had an opportunity to become the top ranked player in the world by finishing second or better - presumably first - in the Dunhill Links Championship on the European Tour.

Westwood completed the opening day well back at -2, and was reported to have withdrawn from the event according to a few sites. Apparently, Westwood injured himself walking down a hill at Kingsbarns' seventh hole. He completed the round.

To blame: the same calf injury that kept him out of the PGA Championship.

"I felt it coming on walking off the 7th tee, a really steep downslope off the 7th tee, and just -- that's what I can only put it down to," Westwood told reporters on Thursday. He came back out and shot even par 72 at the Old Course today.

Westwood will likely make his next start in Portual in November. But there is a good chance Westwood will shut it down for the year.

If this is the injury he

has, shutting it down for the rest of the year is the smartest thing he could do….doesn’t need the Euros to keep feeding the framily, so stop, get healthy and get ready to go in 2K11….You agree Wendy ?….Hellllooooo Wendy…. you there ? hehehe…..STUB

From what I've read, he will shut it down for the rest of the year

Pity about Portugal, though. Lovely country, great weather – think they’ll invite me instead?!

Need a caddie, Wendy ?

I don’t need 10%, just a few beers on the beach :)

10% of nothing = quite a few beers all the same

Went on a fantastic driving tour of Portugal a few years ago – no sticks with us at the time, but still looked at a few courses out of habit.

Vilamora ?

lol – that’s not what he said. Stub said Westie didn’t need any welfare checks from the government. But darn, when he gets healed up again, he’s going to start making that evil money again. :-)

Your reading comprehension is in severe doubt, Court

tho’ your biases are not. Since when did Euros automatically mean welfare cheques?
It’s simply a financial currency. No-one has said that making money is evil – just the worship of it above everything else. Do try to stay in the real world.

I have never denied any of my political statements – I do, however, wonder where the joke was. Are you telling me that you finding it funny that she accuses Tim Finchem of having the character of someone who would carpet bomb an area because he is greedy ? BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA….let me slap my knee.

Personally, I wouldn’t even make a “joke” like that about Obama…though Bill Clinton did send the smart bombs after an asprin factory.

court may think I advocate everyone getting the same wages for any job.

Not true. I believe in working hard for what you want too, but if a professional sportsman has 30 million to his name, I’m suggesting that money is no longer what motivates him.

by Easingwold on Oct 8, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re blaming the players for using their talents to make a really good living ? That’s just hard to believe. If a company opened in your area that competes with the company you work for – and they offered your more money for the job you do – are you saying you wouldn’t take it ?

Now – if you want to say that we have some really bizarre things in our society that pays athletes millions while teachers struggle to get by and their classes struggle to have the supplies they need and some schools drop programs for the arts – then we have a discussion.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 8, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course I'm not blaming any golfer playing for money.

You still don’t get it. What motivates Tiger more…breaking Jacks record or earning another 100 million ? There comes a point when the money is taken care of and the focus becomes more to winning the big ones ( as in Westwood’s case ) than taking the biggest purse available to him. ( Fed Ex cup ) I really don’t know how to make it any clearer to you.

by Easingwold on Oct 8, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just saying that you can’t separate the two. If the money wasn’t there – he wouldn’t be doing it. And if the history wasn’t there, the money wouldn’t mean as much.

Ok – you just be sure to let me know when he, or any other top player, declines his check after a tournament and says that he just doesn’t need it.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol

Westwood says he doesn’t need the PGA tour…despite more money available there. Yes, the richest tour in the world. That choice and that choice alone says everything. the fact that you can’t see that says a bit more about you.

by Easingwold on Oct 10, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Make up your mind – is it the money or the PGA Tour ? The difference in purses between the two tours isn’t all that much anymore – especially for the top guys who are going to be playing at last 7 or 8 tournaments together.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

The purses give points/rankings

which give entry to tournaments, including majors, all of which you know perfectly well, Court. All of this arguing simply because he doesn’t want to contest Fedex.

by WendyUK on Oct 10, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

The rankings points don’t come from the purse – they come from the players in the field. A WGC will always bring more points than a tournament played opposite on any tour because of the players in the field. The size of the purse is incidental.

The argument isn’t about the FEC – the argument came about because Westwood, uncharacteristcally, took a shot at the PGA Tour instead of just saying that he just prefers playing on the European Tour.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So the PGA tour is above taking a shot at ?

Take away the 3 majors and it has become bland. It is the richest tour, but not the most interesting.

by Easingwold on Oct 10, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Not at all – it happens all the time. But what’s the point in taking a negative shot at something when what you really mean is that the European Tour is the tour you like ?

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

When a top player like Westwood turns down the PGA tour

Americans can’t understand why. He was just explaining to them the reasons. The commitment to the FED Ex at that time of the year was one of them. It’s no big deal this side of the pond. How you can miss that main point is way beyond common sense.

by Easingwold on Oct 10, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

In post 9/11

Many Americans are very sensitive about anything they see as negative about them. Court sometimes lets that side of him cloud his thinking. It’s not about them, just a golf tour. Still would like a round of golf with him though :)

by Easingwold on Oct 10, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

lol – agree with the round of golf – but wow – are you wrong about the rest. This is no reflection on America. This is a professional golf tour – not a government agency.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

What in the world are you talking about ? You’ve gone past ridiculous with this one. Just where have you heard “Americans” complaining that Westwood turned down the PGA Tour ?

Nowhere.

There is no committment to the FEC past the point where players love the idea of playing for a HUGE paycheck.

And Westwood staying in Europe is no big deal ? You’re only kidding yourself. Westwood committing to the Euro Tour is huge – and no doubt there are a lot of Tour players who are proud to say that the future #1 player in the world thinks the European Tour is a great place to be. There have been stretches of time when any professional who thought they could make the big bucks on the PGA Tour would swim across the pond to get here if that’s what it took.

Once again – they are professional golfers – they play for pay.

Who is “they” ?

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 10, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It doesn’t matter – it’s just not up to you to tell someone how much they should be able to make. Gates also pays a boatload in taxes every year that go to paying for the indigent, lazy, and illegals in this country – not to mention the taxes he has to pay in countries around the world who sell his products – PLUS his own extensive charity work. He has made hundreds of people multi-millionaires, thousands very wealthy, and who knows how many others a good bit of money directly from his company’s growth.

Then you have the movie stars who make $10-20 million per picture and keep it mostly for themselves unless there is a chance a camera will be there to see a check being handed out. I’ll take Gates.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 8, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

You still miss the point court...

I’m not "telling " anyone what they should earn. Majors simply motivate top golfers more than money does…they already have bucket loads of money. Therefore, they don’t just play for money as you so fondly put it.

by Easingwold on Oct 8, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes – you most certainly are. Time and again, you say that he has more than enough money. That is a value judgement saying that he doesn’t need any more.

Avoid: 1) roasted kid goat, always tough 2) Drives down narrow, twisted mountain roads to Douro river.

Try: Cabbage soup (no, honestly), salt cod, plus equivalent of Spanish tapas – I forget what the Portueguese word is. White Port. Sardines obviously.

Fabulous courses – have friends who go annually (men only though).

After Friday's alarmist messages about calf injuries...

Westwood goes six-under 66 in the wind at Carnoustie on Saturday.

He’s in fifth place.

Should he win, or place second tomorrow, he will displace Woods in the OWGR #1 slot

Don't worry, nothing will be allright.

It looked like there were a pretty fair number of pros who didn’t have amateur partners this past week. I’m just wondering how much to budget for a trip to play in it…when I win the lottery of course. (lol)

Does St Andrews limit play by handicap ? I’ve heard there are courses that require a certain handicap level before being allowed on a course like the Old Course.

No idea - but then I'm just a poor wee woman.

I do know that in France the tees are based on handicap, not sex. I ALWAYS win in France because husband insists on playing off the “mens’ tees” (because he learnt to play in England) whilst I stroll nonchalently to the “womens tees” (even though I have a slightly lower handicap than he does. One day he may catch on – but should I be the one to enlighten him?

All’s fair in marriage & golf, n’est-ce-pas?

by WendyUK on Oct 10, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll take on any lady from the men's tees

whilst she plays of her red tees. Full handicap. Where I draw the line is when I had to give her courtesy shots on top of that. Normally they only get them playing off the men’s tees. A local rule at my club to "encourage " ladies to compete against men. Don’t enter that silly cup anymore :)

by Easingwold on Oct 10, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember you posting something like that before

I don’t know what to say. We played as a 3-some – no quarter given – for several years before our good friend died. He wouldn’t have belittled me by giving me an inch (we were fairly combative colleagues at work).

I can only assume that it is as you say to “encourage” more ladies to play. I don’t know if our club has similar tournaments as I don’t play in them.

LOL! There was some confusion about this at the club

Husband frequently worked abroad so mate & I played golf together and were assumed to be a couple. When joined by husband, HE was assumed to be a friend (a Johnny Foreigner to boot). I quite enjoyed the infamy while it lasted!

by WendyUK on Oct 11, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I do actually play a bit better

when joined by ano, possibly because I concentrate more on not looking like an absolute …..plonker. However, no money involved, so no sandbagging imo.

by WendyUK on Oct 11, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I break 80 every year..

but never as much as I need to to get to single figures. I average about 82 throughout the year ( my chipping is rubbish for my level ) but never have I ever seen any golfer as a plonker, just different abilty. I have played with pros and 120 shooters too. I think it’s great that any golfer with a handicap can compete against anyone. I played with a club pro once, had a great day, shot 77 and he felt the pressure with my 10 shots at the time. he shot 66 and beat me by 1. I never play for money, just a pint :)

You know what I mean

I just don’t want to play particularly badly when joined by someone I don’t know. I have to say that in many years there has only ever been one person I would decline to have join us again (gamesmanship & a moaner to boot) – everyone else has been good company & v. supportive.
