Monty's Going to Hit the Gym for the First Time in His Career
After a successful term as Ryder Cup captain - which may or may not continue - Colin Montgomerie returned to being a player on the European Tour. He's in this week's Dunhill Links Championship. Paired with Martin Kaymer on day one, Monty got an even closer look at just how far the German and PGA Champion hits the ball. It wasn't good.
So bad was it, that Monty decided he might pick up a dumbbell.
"I was a long way behind him. I know Martin is a long hitter, but if that's the competition nowadays I have to find 20, 30 yards so I can compete again.
"I've got to find that. I'm using equipment that's the highest technology so I don't really know how else one can do that - other than to get to the gym.
"I'm afraid it may be the only way to go.
"I'm going to have to lift one of these weights I've never lifted before."
You can't make manboob jokes about a guy who just won the Ryder Cup and charmed the pants off of everyone in the process. But never lifted weights? Mike Sorrentino is crying somewhere in a New Jersey tanning bed.

Give it up Monty - it's not going to happen
anymore than I’m going to break 80 this year, even if I go back to the weights. Rest on your laurels.
How very dare you!
I’ll have you know that I go out in all temperatures (but not pouring rain). Well, when I say all temperatures, I mean anything above or just below freezing point – which our American cousins don’t seem to know applies to the British Isles all year long.
I was motivating you to a 79 :)
Always easier to do it in winter, here is hoping to get it on the day you might have put your feet up. Often a great score happens when you don’t expect it …good luck :)
What’s the best round so far this year, Wendy ? I haven’t broken 80 yet this year, either.
Your winter weather is kept warm-ish compared to other places along the same latitudes because of the flow of warmer water around the island, riight ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
That's right court
we are lucky here…the Gulf stream keeps us warmer than we should be. The sea around the UK acts as an insulator, gets about 10 c at it’s coldest. If we get the cold easterly winds from Russia, it usually drops to -20 in Britain on a bad day…mainland Europe will be -35 at least….get a southwesterly wind blowing hard the next week it can climb to 15 c in days. Always have the clubs at the ready, lol
Going backwards, Court
84 (& it was only a par 69). As Easing says the Gulf Stream keeps us warmer than we are entitled to be on our latitude. Additionally, the bad weather in winter normally comes from the north-east, north-west, and I’m on the central south coast with a ridge of hills (called the South Downs) immediately to the north which creates a bit of a micro-climate for us.
Wendy Dear...I don't know...that
sounds like a fair weather golfer to me.. jist sayin that is….and I once had a friend at a bar I used to stop in….just to read the paper mind ya…….ask me if I still played in the 70’s….I said yes, andy colder and I didn’t play….yuk, yuk, yuk…..I got a million of um….STUB
Other way round for me, STUB
I can’t play in extreme heat/humidity – which I consider to be anything approaching 80F.
I don't enjoy the heat playing golf
unless there is a good breeze. One thing that gets me about trollys…walking around huge greens…carrying, I walk across them and take the flag out for the putt .
It's really not her muscles that lack Easy
it’s the chipping, pitching part of the game that is her Waterloo….Wendy….October here, and still in high 80s..low 90s…Humidity not too bad…what does get bad is the Ozone level…With my bad heart, I just about can’t breath when it’s high….Orange level the worst….Just stay in house and drink than….well, that is when I’m not chasing these young girls around that is…..hehehe…STUB
STUB.....help me!!!!
I’ve got the Driver yips, or the “Drips”. I’m hitting my irons and putting great, but can’t get off the tee. It’s totally mental. I’ve started hitting my 3 iron off the tee. I’m open to suggestions, but I gotta tell you up front, I can’t afford a brain transplant, but anything else is ok.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Em, dearest one
My drives are perfecto – putting stinks – it’s golf. Love/hate. It’s just a bloody game, Grrrr!
Em...
Set up as normal, but swing 70 …like you would do with a half wedge…full swing with the driver of course…but 70 power..light grip…remember Snead’s tip about the small bird..finish facing the target. You are much better than me…good luck !
Oh go on then
pick on my short game. Which is only fair comment. I just don’t understand how you can play in such high temperatures/humidity. Phew!
90 here today.......but the humidity is low, so it is not
that bad. Right now it’s HATE!!! I’m putting lights out, chipping is good, deadly from 160 in, but stick a driver in my hands and I go completely brain dead…….it’s unbelievable. I know its mental, but oh, so frustrating. I shot 79 today and almost all my bogeys were caused by my driver. Playing well enough to be shooting even par, but my driver is killing me. I may demo another driver, just to get a different look.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Amazing game golf.
My chipping is the worst, lol. Try the 3 wood em. I wonder if you are swinging down with the irons…taking a big divot ? You seem to be ripping the irons, is your driver swing perhaps a little steep ? Check your driver plane in the mirror…but not in the house…I almost smashed mine years ago, lol.
I guess that's why playing in our weather kills em Wendy.
16 C and they have bobble hats on ! I hate it when it is humid…I didn’t mind sweating on the rugby pitch but not on a golf course.
There must be a wind chill factor at play, Easing
otherwise I simply don’t understand, ‘cos 16C is fine by me. Mind you, it is still warm & sunny down here, around 21C, quite windy but for some reason it’s a warm wind. I was pretty nervous about our stint in Kuwait, but to my amazement it has zero humidity (unlike Bahrain for example) so you never sweat even in 40C+ as it evaporates immediately.
Humidity is the killer
I think here, Wendy, it is down to central heating in the house. I swear, some fellow workmates have the thermostat at 25 c…no wonder 15 c feels cold to them.
