Bunker/Not A Bunker, My Personal Strife Edition
In what will be the final Bunker/Not A Bunker under my watch at Waggle Room, I present to you this dilly of a pickle from my weekend match with Futures Tour (and Hopefully Soon LPGA Tour) Correspondent Stephanie Connelly.
After hitting a beautiful layup to just inside 150 yards on the uphill par 5 13th hole of our round, I landed here.
As always: bunker or not a bunker?
Stephanie told me it wasn't a bunker and that it was ground under repair. It looked like GUR, so we played it that way. I ended up tying the hole when I three-putted like a guy who hadn't played golf in a few months. (It had only really been about a month.)
In the end, Stephanie won our 14 hole match - where I got a stroke on each of the five hardest holes left - 1 UP. There will be a rematch.

Hmmmmm......my first reaction would be that
this gives credence to the reports of water on the moon….but they didn’t mention grass was also there……:)
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Except that it’s not GUR unless it’s marked as GUR. (white paint around the area) Sure looks like it should have been marked as such – nice of her to give you the free drop. (sounds like she wasn’t shaking in her boots for a possible come back)
From the guy side, though – awfully sporting of you to build her confidence like that. A true gentleman ! :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Did you check the local rules?
Did you check any instructions in the locker room? You’re not getting GUR from me on this one. However, I’ll let you ground your club, but you’ll have to play that ball as it lies. That Stephanie is a real softie ;o)
I KNEW Wendy would say that ! (guessed Eas would, too) No doubt she’s a UK links golfer who plays by the original rules – play the ball as it lies ! :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Court, I'm tellin ya OL WENDY is tougher than
govment issued shoe leather….She is right on the local rules tho…No, I don’t think Wendys club is links…the only time she puts her hand on it tho, is to retrive it from the waters edge…As for Easy….I think he would have left Ryan slide, but would have expected a pint or two in return….jis sayin here….STUB
y’know – I missed that big picture item with Eas – excellent point !
Wait – Wendy belongs to a club ? How elitist ! (lol) Just kidding – I know they’re not all like the evil American country clubs. :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
How can it be elitist when they let me join? lol
I’ve played better munis than my club, but it’s friendly, not that long or difficult so suits me. I’m afraid that some of the smarter clubs are probably very snobbish. Not my scene.
simple – ‘cause you’re not Groucho Marx :-D
I loved the clubs over there. Even lunch in the real Carnoustie clubhouse was as friendly as it gets. The clubhouse at Crail was the most fun…of course, that’s where they introduced me to a cheeseburger with Stilton cheese.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Irresistable after DJ fiasco - sorry to be so predictable though ;o)
Love watching links golf – hate playing it. I have no problem with taking advantage of local rules though.
hey – the rules are there to help. you SHOULD take advantage of them.
why do you hate links golf ? I loved playing on the ground over there.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Perhaps because I think I have hit a perfect shot
(well as perfect as I can) and the ball bounces where exactly? Same kind of lie as Ryan’s, that’s where. Also being a titch, I find playing in high winds pretty difficult.
I can think of another couple of things, but dinner is beckoning and I haven’t laid the table yet!
Yes, Eas would too...
Times look hard on that course from the photo. If that mess was made by an animal, digging away one would get a free drop anyway.
Hey Court
Have you just read the one about Monty, Faldo & Imada in China. Monty didn’t read the local rules and moved a signpost (locker room sheet said No, No), penalised 2 strokes, Faldo thought he was in a matchplay & picked up a missed putt, DQ – & Imada doesn’t know that lift, clean & place outside of PGA is 6" or scorecard – penalised 26 strokes for every time he used a club length instead. At least it’s a darn sight funnier than DJ’s bunker.
no – but I heard a good one about a priest, a rabbi, and a race horse going into a bar ? (lol)
Yeah – I heard about that mess. Amazing what kind of brain farts we can dream up, isn’t it ? Good for Ryuji for signing that scorecard. A lot of guys would have just not turned int he card and takend the DQ. He did the honorable thing. (and the last place check is still the last place check)
Still – seems like someone needs to talk with the Chinese golf people and explain the rules. Signs are movable obstructions, and everybody plays a club length on a drop like that. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Admittedly I've never known signs not to be movable obstructions
in professional tournaments (not necessarily so for local tournaments) but EVERYBODY does NOT play a club-length on lift, clean & place. In Europe ( & apparently Asia) it’s 6"/scorecard and I would assume all US PGA players coming over here would have to know that.
???
it’s a pile of splashed sand – looks like it was thrown there to prepare ground for new grass. A bunker is supposed to be enclosed – not just sand laying on the ground.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
splash
Remember DJ and the “bunker” ?? When in doubt..its a hazard thats hwat I do and never do I get that ’orrible penalty, anyway its always good for future shots to take a swing as if its a hazzard
always a good rule of thumb, no doubt – but this picture and what Johnson was standing in aren’t even close to the same.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
just pointing out...
When in doubt its a hazard or ask…
"If it doesn't work, you are trying to hard."

funny that you mention that splash – earlier in that same round, Johnson called the official walking with his group about a small pile of sand that had been splashed out of a bunker directly behind where his ball was laying. The official confirmed what everybody watching knew – it was loose sand outside the bunker – not a bunker. He called the official for one other bunker situation that day, too. Why he didn’t do anything at 18 is a real mystery.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
double splash
DJ got screwed on that one, but hail to hero and his come back!
"If it doesn't work, you are trying to hard."
http://twitter.com/Roy_Ko
Why would you say he got screwed ?
The local rules and the Sheet given to all Players BEFORE THE EVENT STARTS clearly stated that all were bunkers….He grounded his club, and broke the rule….plain and simple….Are you one of those who think the rules are for others and not yourself, putting your hand on the ball when you shouldn’t ? It’s the rules of our sport, that set us apart from all the others, and the fact we police ourselves….don’t need all those refs…We un is genelmen and ladies….STUB
hmmm..we ever played together, thinker?
I certainly haven;’t been to any tournament where the crowds are allowed to stand in “bunkers” IMO he got screwed, nothing to do with my golf ethics….Sir
"If it doesn't work, you are trying to hard."

Kind of a surprising statement, royko. You start off saying “if in doubt – treat it like it’s a hazard” – then you say DJ got screwed. Can’t be both – and Stub is 100% correct. The rules were explained at the beginning of the week, they were posted in the locker room, and everybody else knew. DJ screwed up – he didn’t get screwed.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
More like "screwed up"......I'm a big fan
of DJ, but this is all on him and his caddy. No excuses.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Totally irrelevant as to whether you have ever been to a tournament
where the crowds are allowed to stand in bunkers – nor have I – but if you enter a tournament you should read the local rules. Good luck in the future to DJ, but he certainly wasn’t screwed.
