What the **** Is Wrong With Me?

The current local time is 3:32 AM.

I was asleep last evening by 8:00 PM (20:00), so as to wake at 2:30 AM.

And watch golf on television.

Photobucket

Coffee comes from God.

And this is the Ryder Cup.

Good morning, everyone.

Star-divide

(Update: Now, it would appear as though play is likely to be suspended for awhile. I still have four hours before my own tee time during the 7 o'clock hour. The American partisan in me finds it difficult to complain, though, as our side is off to an inauspicious beginning.)

And good morning to you.

Sorry about the rain ( I did promise some :) )…you can use the delay for some napping :)

I was at St. Andrew’s on the Wednesday of Open week in July, and from what I can discern the conditions are very similar – though I suppose there are at least a few windbreaks at Celtic Manor.

I don’t envy these guys at all this morning.

July was a lot warmer than now

Better tomorrow, but more of the same Sunday for the singles. I feel sorry for the people running the show this week, they will have to work very hard to keep play going. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes into Monday. Hignsight is a wonderful thing, but I said a while back October is too late here for the Ryder Cup…but it had to make way for the FED EX …

It most certainly is not Aussie (similar)

It’s WELSH. Max Boyce, Welsh comedian popularised it in the 70’s at rugby/comedy performances. Why else would they be singing it at Celtic Manor?

I’m thinking an entire continent of Aussies would disagree with you…not that it matters. The only place I’ve ever heard that cheer was for Australians.

What are we going to sing ? Britney Spears tunes ? Hand out karaoke sheets and play music ? Unless you go to an Irish pub here in the States, or a University of Tennesee football game, you’re just not going to find very much sing along. It’s hard to beat the Euro fans and their songs.

What do you bet that every potential future US Captain is making a mental note that the wife will not be allowed to choose parts of the uniform that are functional and not just fashionable. How can you order rain gear for Wales that isn’t water PROOF ?

Good ol’ Tom Rinaldi – when will ESPN ever learn not to put this clown on golf broadcasts ? He started off one of his interviews about the weather with “Corey, you’ve always been known as someone with a flat personality….” Way to go Tom ! Making friends already. The US simply couldn’t take any more Euro stick about the style (lack of), plus those tacky names on the back, so had to think of some excuse! New stuff much better.

My golf bag isn’t waterproof either – don’t they simply use covers? I know they’re a nuisance but that’s just another cross for the poor caddies to bear.

Wasn't Carnaby St. your era, Court?

by WendyUK on Oct 1, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s Carnaby ?

I’m not a fashionista – personally, it seems to me that an awful lot of women’s urban fashion comes from prostitutes – and men’s fashion just doesn’t change much past fabrics and the occassional reach into insanity with things like leisure suits, urban cowboys, and metro-sexuals. :-D

I was just teasing you, Wendy. I don’t really care where fashion comes from – it’s like art – I know what I like – and it usually revolves around what’s in the clothes more than the clothes themselves. I can’t wear anything Poulter wears and have it look presentable.

…that has the rights there?

Are you listening to the incomparable Peter Allis?

Therefore no Peter Alliss. Sadly not everyone has Sky Sports pay package – should be BBC for everyone but they were outbid.

Should say...

…“of reasons to hate Rupert Murdoch.”

Oh, a little too much black & tan this afternoon.

by turnover on Oct 2, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller has ben particularly bad this week – constantly berating players who mishit a shot or misread a putt. i don’t know how he got through his entire career without a poorly struck shot or missed putt. Someone had a wedge to a green and flew his shot to the back of the green. Miller just went nuts on him…then started explaining how that was one of the most difficult shots in golf.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 2, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Court, I get the idea

Miller remembers his best shots, like most of us do. Ben Hogan said he remembered his bad shots more. In any case, Miller was a very good player, if not a great one.

by Easingwold on Oct 2, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller was great for 2 years – before and after those two years, he was average to a little above average on a streak. He’s an arrogant, bitter old man who doesn’t like that he’s been passed on most of his great years.

True 10 years ago I think.

Accually, a mate of mine who dosen’t have Sky tried to watch it on the website. But it’s rare for any golfer not to have it now. I remember when BBC had 10 events 18 years ago…now it is almost down to just the Open. But with all the gadgets we all have today, Sky is almost mandatory for all…a few quid a day or not.

Dottie Pepper has to go...

…I’m just getting through some of my recording from earlier today and got to the Rickie Fowler interview by Dottie Pepper…and was this one ever a doozie.

About the lost hole penalty when Fowler dropped his own ball instead of Furyk’s on the 4th hole – “How hard was it for you to continue on…” OH MY LORD !!!!!!!!!!! Just unplug this woman and leave her buried in a bunker someplace.

How hard was it for you to continue on ?? Meaning “why didn’t you just shoot yourself in the head and let Jim finish by himself – or maybe just throw yourself into the river and drown – how can you POSSIBLE go on living, much less play golf after (gasp) dropping the wrong ball and costing your team a hole” ?

The woman is a blithering idiot. Shouldn’t a former player have a LITTLE more perspective ?

absolutely amazing

watching the afternoon matches – it’s incredible how many Euro putts are just touching the lip, making a victory lap, and dropping in while the US putts are getting to the hole and vearing away.

Dottie has it figured out – the US “JUST needs to get both guys on these teams to play better at the same time.” Can someone tell me why Dottie wasn’t chosen as captain ? Seriously – how can you beat that kind of leadership insight ?

The odd cheer for missed putts for the away team is normal court

And it happens every Ryder cup, and the players accept that. What some fans were saying to Monty in Brookline as he was trying to play isn’t. It was so bad Payne Stewart gave Monty the hole. Trying to stir the pot, mate ? :)

by Easingwold on Oct 3, 2010 4:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Odd cheer ? There have been some near roars. I’ve tried to write it off to the Europeans winning the hole or at least gettng a halve, but it’s pretty tough sometimes.

The Ryder cup crowd over the years

has been infiltrated with football fans as well who also play golf. The team thing, not usually a golf matter, gets rowdy at times. Even at the Open, I have noticed British fans now saying "get in the hole ! "…thankfully not on a tee shot on a par 5 yet…seen that on TV on the PGA tour :) I think as the world gets smaller, some things get more universal in the world.

by Easingwold on Oct 3, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

most noticeably when Stewart Cink’s ball rolled back into the water – karma – same thing happened to Rory. It’s bad sportsmanship, but there are idiots on either side so no holier than thou, thanks.

On a lighter note re Dottie (I quite like her, but obviously don’t have to listen to her commentary),
she sneezed whilst Lee was teeing off, he backed off shot, she sneezed again as he hit bad drive. She apologised profusely – apparently he smiled and assured her it wasn’t her fault. Bet that wasn’t what he was thinking though! ;-)

Barrel Chested sounds more complimentary

Just think of how a pigeon’s breast looks. I’m so happy for him – give him a hug from me the next time you see him pls?

Jimenez is a class act both on and off the course. I would have to say he is in our top-5 as most respected and liked clients.

What really surprised me, was Lee

losing…I thought he had been one of the Euros strongest players all Week…OK Wendy…get off the couch, get some laundry and house work done before your wonderful husband gets home from slaving away all day….hehehe…..STUB

That was fantastic

I can’t think of a more exciting finish to a Ryder Cup than this. Even Brookline. But wow – what a heartbreaker for Mahan. A weak approach and then that chunked pitch. One birdie all day when the course was giving them away like candy for everybody else. Great planning by Monty to save McDowell for that last spot. How about that putt from Fowler ?

Incredible turnout by the fans. I don’t know if we would get anything near that size for a Monday finish in the states.

(and yes – Dottie Pepper and Jimmy Roberts and Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller were complete embarrassments)

Hey Court, yur right... I don't think had that been played

here in the states, that the crowd would have been half that large…Most everyone would have left Sunday evening to get back and go to work today…..STUB

high unemployment in the UK maybe ?

Retired, self-employed, enough notice

to call in & promise to make up the time, etc? Doubt many unemployed people would have been able to afford the tickets in the first place.

How about we either make the Ryder Cup permanent to the UK for the crowds – or bring some of those fans over to have them teach our folks how to cheer and sing ? (lol)

You've got to find chants to take the mickey out of Euro players

We had:

For Cink & McIlroy: “You’ve got BigMac, we’ve got Little Mc” + “We’ve got more hair, we’ve got more hair”. Cink even doffed his cap to the chant.

“There’s only one Lee Westwood”. “We’ve got 2 Molinaris”.

Not exactly brilliant, are they, but does set the mood & relaxes the players on the 1st tee (well, as much as anything can).

See ? That’s funny stuff. Over here, the only real chanter we have is Jesse Jackson, and he’d probably only be able to come up with something to call the Europeans a bunch of racists because they don’t have any “African Americans” on the team…..and yes, he’s just dumb enough to acccuse Europe of not having any African Americans. :-D

I think we've been down this road before

about golf being a “White Man’s Sport” both in USA & here, and possible reasons why that may be the case, but surely Chicago-land can come up with some witty chants? Looking down the Euro team this time round, there were probably only a couple of physical things to mock (McIlroys hair, a couple of shortasses maybe – no, don’t go there, Court) , but if we get a tubby one on the next team, the football chant is “Who ate all the pies” “X ate all the pies”. Just a pointer ;-)

by WendyUK on Oct 4, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know. Last time Chicago-land got involved in chants – we ended up with “Yes we Can” and the Obama supporters never bothered to ask “yes we can….what ?” (lol)

I'm exhausted - I knew it was going to be a nail-biting finish

I do feel for Mahan – the no. of times I’ve done when I think I’ve got the hole in the bag. Obviously Monty will claim he wanted Graeme to have the honour, but I’ll let him. Couldn’t believe Rickie’s putt – at that point my heart was in my shoes. I just loved the crowd with Jim & Luke on the first when they were swishing away waiting to tee off. Did you hear the wag who shouted “Hurry up – I won’t be able to get Tuesday off”?

Our commentators were great, ( including Butch Harmon).

I was just wishing we could have heard the British broadcast for their interviews and reactions.

As bad as Jimmy Roberts is, he did let Westwood repeat something they talked about before the interview. Westwood said that he hadn’t had a drink in 7 weeks and they were wasting it pouring the champagne on Luke Donald’s head. Classic.

At times like these..

Golf is the greatest sport. Great contest, both sides could have won , and thanks to our American cousins for being gracious in defeat. Looking forward to the next one…hope the blog is still going. Have a word with Ryan, court :)

It's OK for you to say so

who was left here holding the fort chewing their nails (figuratively)? Down to the wire – I never expected anything less.

by WendyUK on Oct 4, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed.

A wonderful contest, some brilliant play, and sportsmanship to spare.
