SBS Championship, Round 3 - Game Thread
Lucas Glover has maintained a three shot lead over the winners-only field at the SBS Championship at Kapalua. He backed up his first round of -7 (66) with a 65 to finish 36 holes at -15 - right about on pace with Ernie Els' -31 performance in 2003. Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy is four back.
No player is over par, but Heath Slocum perilously sits on even par.
Here are the tee times for round three.
Some questions to answer:
- Can Glover maintain his torrid pace and challenge Ernie Els' PGA Tour scoring record?
- Will Geoff Ogilvy find it in his Footjoys to shoot 64 and take the lead?
- Can Angel Cabrera simply overpower Kapalua to become a contender?
- Will an American have the best chance to finally take this championship back on Sunday?

Well if it is an American, I hope.......
it is Stricker or O’Hair…..and non-Americans….oh, say…. Ogilvy or Casey would be fine….and of course my choices have nothing to do with my fantasy team…….lol

Looks like more perfect weather out there – light winds – warm – lots of sun…lots of low scores to come.
Ogilvy might shoot 64, but it will take a 62 to take the lead – G Lover is playing too well.

you see, Red...
…why I don’t play fantasy games ? I’m so gullible that I believe the friggin’ weather people ! Kona winds = higher scores, but they told us there would be light trade winds…oh well.
(but at least I know the difference in steam and fog…Mark Rolfing…when lava hits the ocean, it creates steam from the water up…fog drops from the clouds through cooling) :-D

I don’t think they’re going to tuck a whole lot of pins this week. With all that has gone on the last 2 months, the Tour wants to put on a big show, which means lots of birdies and eagles.

Obi-Ping says:
No, No, No and yes. Here’s my beef with the SBS. Players are getting FedEx points based on LAST YEAR’S performance. Of course now the Tour and the sponsor have elevated the FedEx Cup to something approaching The Holy Grail…. Harrington is not only a great golfer he’s a fine actor as we’ll. For him to say at the end of a pro career people will want to know how many FedEx Cups a pro won (or words to that effect) and say it will a straight face. That’s, as Jon Lovitz used to say on SNL, “ACTING”!

Off to a blazing start in the booth – just HOW do these geniuses think that Glover is going to be tied for the lead before he takes the first tee ? He has a three shot lead over the guy he’s playing with, and only 5 guys (2 1/2 groups) are within 4. They just don’t waste time making dumb comments.

well just for you – I’ll text G Lover’s wife and make sure you don’t have to kiss him. (ducking)
you lost me – you were worried about the germs from cigarette butts being flipped aside on the fairway ? (dodging the left hook and retreating)
I’m not a big smoking fan either, but as long as butts aren’t being tossed on dry grass, it doesn’t bother me. Guess I got used to the chew in high school. best friend chewed – he drove an AMC Ambassador station wagon (so he could carry his keyboards) and it always had a hilarious brown streak on the driver’s side. As long as the smoke isn’t blown in my face or juice splashed on me – I don’t let that stuff bother me.

And now we know Tilghman doesn't pay attention to her own broadcasts
it’s only been on the Thursday AND Friday broadcasts – yes – we know Lucas Glover’s biggest sports thrill wasn’t winning the US Open – it was running the hill with the Clemson football team before a game.

And that's why they're the pros and I'm not...
…oh my – G Lover, 2nd shot at 15, ball slightly below his feet needing a shot that turns to the left – heavy wind gusts – figures 3-iron and 3-wood end up in the same spot – so NATURALLY…he wants to hit Driver off the deck…and nearly pulls it off. He needed just a few extra yards of turn to find the green.

Lookin’ strong. The Iggles drilled the Giants, then the Vikes drilled the Giants. In the meantime, the Boyz drilled the Philly team in consecutive games. Looks like a great matchup next Sunday. I’m pulling for the Saints next weekend, even though a Cowboys win and a Saints loss puts the Boyz at home for a shot at the Bowl. Beat the best to be the best, Ii always say!

3 for 3
Not too bad… As has been said, experience on this course is an advantage and Oglivy has that over Glover. It’ll take another round before we can find out about an American winner. After Glover, Ryan Moore is our next best hope. Speaking of experience, Appleby won three years in a row…what has happened to his game? I don’t believe he even made the top 125 for this year. Should be a good final round. A 500 yd. opening par four… That’s a lot of grass to mow…..

Heath Slocum may not be playing very well this week – but he’ll be the big winner very soon with child #2 just about to be born. Practice hasn’t been the priority in the Slocum house lately.

I've been reading all the "complaints" about TGC announcers,
and I gotta agree….they are atrocious. Kelly makes me want to puke with her continuous dribble…..I mean, if she said 2 meaningful words yesterday I would be surprised. Faldo is not as bad, but Lerner……barf…..everytime I heard him, he was repeating some article he wrote on TGC.com…..surely he can come up with more than that……well, maybe not.
I would gladly listen to Johnny Miller every tournament…..at least he’s not boring and he doesn’t kiss up to the players…..if you listen to other announcers, every shot is a 10 on the difficulty scale and all good shots are way over hyped….with Miller, he’ll tell you a shot is easy, and then when it’s screwed up, he’ll say so. Give me Miller!
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
by em66 on Jan 10, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Miller says EVERY shot is easy…to him. To listen to him, he never missed a shot in his career. He never describes a shot or situation before it is hit – just gives 20/20 analysis on what a mistake it was to hit into a lake or bunker…thanks Johnny, we were all thinking he INTENDED to yank that ball into the hazard. Intollerable arrogance.

He’s all yours…though I do still give him credit for one of the funniest lines ever during an LPGA tournament years ago. Extremely short par 3 – shot gets yanked WAY left into the woods – Miller says, “guess the lie wasn’t very good.” I about fell off the couch laughing. Of course, he didn’t finish the weekend – he was excused that day.

Supports our troops, and gets what it is to appreciate being a U.S. Citizen, though he just got his citizenship. He offers up analysis, while still having a sense of humor. No cookie cutter in site there. Miller, though i despise his (knowitallness) is still better than the TGC brood. I’m still trying to find a keeper in that bunch. Awful.

TGC - ON/OFF
The problem (if there is one) is if you want to watch golf, The Golf Channel is the only port in the storm… The broadcasters are an never ending source of fodder for derisive comments. Obviously our caustic remarks about Kelly, that have gone on from day one, are having ZERO impact on her career. She’s working! Besides criticizing her is like shooting fish in a barrel….. “I hate to be critical”???? Now that’s funny!

Since this has turned into a referendum on TGC
Not long ago, there was an article on the TGC blog about the upcoming Trump show. I counted three pages, 22 comments ALL expressing various degrees of distain for Trump and the show. Where else would the company get feedback other than their blog? I’ve said before, I don’t think we (age 55+) are the target audience. I think Michael Breed sounds like the Billy Mays (RIP) of golf, much too shrill. Big Break is unbearably redundant. How many panes of glass can you break or walls to be hit over???? Apparently a bunch! Maybe those guys in the 18-35 demographic think these shows are terrific.
