Now That He's 30, What Did You Expect From Sergio Garcia in His 20s?

It is hard to believe, but Sergio Garcia turns 30 this weekend.  (I can't believe I turn 27 in April.)  Since bursting into the public consciousness at Medinah in the '99 PGA Championship, Garcia has produced as solid of a career as could be had by almost any professional golfers in their 20s.

Garcia did way better than Justin Rose.  He accomplished way more than Matt Kuchar.  Ty Tryon is a sore subject.  In other words, Garcia handled the label of "next best thing since Tiger" better than any of his peers.  Perhaps the only player to handle it better could be Rory McIlroy, who still has another ten years to see if that is true.

At the same time, though, Garcia failed to meet expectations.  Yes, he won the Players Championship, but he is majorless despite several very close calls to win a major.  He ceded the Open Championship to Padraig Harrington in 2007 in a playoff.  A year later, Harrington foiled Garcia's chance at his first major.

Still, with nearly twenty global wins in his twenties, Garcia's accomplishments are awfully impressive.  Though Tiger and Jack really defied the rule that golfers begin winning majors in their 30s, Garcia seemed to have an awfully higher standard placed on him.

Perhaps it was him standing up to Tiger in the first place that made that so.  More likely was the youthful brilliance of Seve Ballesteros.

Should Sergio have won a major in his twenties?  Yeah.  He got himself on the doorstep twice and could not walk through the door.

Is the best likely to come?  Probably.  Sergio will win his major.  Davis Love III did and it is evident that Garcia is more talented.  He will shed his dreaded label.

The question for me, though, is if Sergio Garcia will mature in his 30s.  If he does not, he very well could become the Spanish Woody Austin - minus the scuba get-up.  Garcia will need to find maturity and focus that often eludes him in order to realize his full potential in the peak of his career.

Phil Mickelson at 30

16 tour wins, 10 Top 10s in majors, 0 major wins, 0 TPCs.

Sergio has:
15 tour wins in Europe and PGA Tour combined, 15 Top 10s in majors, 0 major wins, 1 TPC.

Not bad company.

Interestingly, Phil turns 40 in June. That makes me feel old.

The more the years pass, the more I am convinced that Garcia and Mickelson will have many parallels between their careers.

Too much crying though.....

but, atleast he seems to want it badly. He probably will break through soon, and then more will come. Atleast that’s what history teaches us.

It's funny...

… how the Tiger Woods debacle has made many take another look at Sergio’s character and has some asking if “wearing it on your sleeve” as Sergio always has, isn’t decidedly better than the draconian, diciplined, robotic public image that Tiger formulated for himself.

In the short run maybe the big wins may not come as fast or as frequently, but in the long run Tiger’s inability to “be what he was” ( ie. human) publicly, may have led to to what he ultimately became in his private life.

The Media is trolling for something....anything..

Sergio? I’d about forgot about him… We’ve got some great stat people commenting here. If CG mentioned Sergio’s 19 wins world wide to validate his career, then Montomerie must be mentioned. At the risk of offending our British/Euro posters, you can count on the fingers of one hand the great golfers of the modern era that are not Americans. Sergio, like Phil is doing his best Tom Weiskopf imitation…born at the wrong time. Question: Does anyone REALLY Laugh Out Loud?

Come on Ping – how unfeeling can you be ? The poor guy is hated by flagsticks, lost his part of the Norman millions when he got dumped, can’t get Spanish machismo past the luck of the Irish in a major, and now he’s just forgettable ?

Nah – just a fact correction.

And yes – there have been things written on here that have made me crack up…out loud.

want to like Sergio, I really wan………ah…..it’s not working. “So, are you a slicer?……no, I’m a hooker”…..Can you imagine how funny that would be now if Tiger had made that commercial????

Changing my view of Sergio Garcia

I watched Golf Central this morning while we pedalled in the living room. 7 PGA Tour wins and 11 world wide isn’t exactly chopped liver… And he was #2 briefly this past year. His negatives come mostly from his personality and behavior… Odd how maturity is so often paired with stoicism. Of course the perception of a successful golfer has largely been shaped by Jack NIcklaus and his ilk. A couple of generations of pros wanted to “Be like Jack”. Sergio comes from a Seve background. I’m believing if Sergio had two or three majors on his resume’ his behavior wouldn’t be brought into question as often as it is. Very few fans credit Sergio for speaking his mind. Mostly he’s viewed as a whinner.
