SBS Championship, Round 2 - Game Thread
For each round of the marquee event each week, Waggle Room presents an open thread to comment on anything pertaining to that day's action. This is the first crack at it, so it'll evolve over time. Let me know any suggestions that you might have by e-mailing me: ryan at thegolfnewsnet.com.

America back?
Jim Furyk was the last American to win this tournament, way back in 2001. But nine of the top 13 players entering the second round are from the U.S., so this could be the year the international streak ends. Interesting to note that between 1953 and 2001, only three non-Americans were victorious — Gary Player and Steve Elkington each won twice, and Canadian powerhouse Stan Leonard (who?) won in 1958.

So THAT'S been my problem with the fantasy games...
…I didn’t realize that this tournament was the bell cow for the season. :-)

I sucked. Actually I'm really
not to blame, as my players didn’t perform…..It can’t be my fault…..I made great picks!! F’s & G’s……I’m not playing to win……I just want to stay in the $$$$…..then I can be happy with 48th place…..lol
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
Court, are you secretly rooting for Stricker this week?? Please, Stop It!!! I need him to step it up. Maybe an early start today will help. Feel free to cheer on Nick Watney. :-)
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
nice move...
in round 2, em…I’m hoping for Stricker to go low on Saturday!!!
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
You go girl....I saw you are #3.....
I’ve got Stricker, but I didn’t play him today, may not tomorrow, which means he’ll do real well…..good for you. Great Picks
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
With only 10 starts this whole year for each player, I just didn’t feel like I could switch after round 1 – I’m committing to Stricker this whole weekend – I’m calling in the prayer chain tonight. :) I’m a big Kuchar fan, so I’d love to see him win it all! Good Luck this weekend!

EM please,
do not try to steal my schtick…I SUCKED, because of the cold here in the USA of Texas…how cold is it you ask…it is at 16 degrees as i write this, and that’s colder than a well diggers butt….but really, Nathan Green and Martin Laird in second…who are they? Probably from the legions of pros we can’t recognize, if we stumbled over them….my picks were good, they just played “like friggin chokin dogs”…Gawd, Dottie would be so proud of me…STUB
Green and Laird may not be household names or faces, but they WON on the PGA TOUR – which demands a little more respect than you’re giving them.
Are you playing a round by round fantasy league ? I thought it was the final tally on Sunday that mattered.

It’s round by round. Get points very best rounds of the day and then points for how they finish the tournament.

Ahem !!
Well, I’m currently tied for second with Golf Girl in the fantasy #2 league with 62 pts. Long way to go yet. Good tournament so far. All the guys looked a little lax and rusty yesterday but thats to be expected. Cabrera looked confident overall. We shall see…jumpn/progolf
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
It's currently 20° F here in north Alabama.
Due to a little snow yesterday (and resultant black ice this morning), my workplace decided not to open today. I’m bored out of my skull, even with live golf on television. Perhaps I should move closer to the equator.
I considered tossing a little money into my wagering account and playing the day’s races at Gulfstream, but watching thoroughbreds running in Miami will likely make me just as envious of warm weather as watching these PGA bastards saunter around sunny Kapalua.
Snagged a nice old 8813 off the eBay, and it arrived yesterday. I’ve spent the morning putting around the den.
Still, all is not lost.
ROLL TIDE!!!

more bad news...
…that’s a replay of yesterday’s round…maybe I shouldn’t have said anything – I might have gotten in a few bets with you :-)
How far north are you in Bama-land ? We got about an inch of snow here in Atlanta, but it was pretty dry and just blew around a lot. A few bad spots caught a lot of bad drivers.
Nice pickup on the putter ! Leather grip ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I'm in Huntsville.
We only got about an inch as well. Unfortunately, if fell during the day yesterday, so whatever melted from traffic re-froze overnight.
Unfortunately, the putter is a later production model with a rubber grip. It does, however, have the fluted shaft. It’s in great shape, almost no bag clatter, and I got it for about $30 including shipping.

Me too.
I much prefer a simple putter design, and I don’t much care for inserts.

Lucas Glover has continued to be the hottest golfer out there. He’s almost 1/2 way to Els’ recorord -31. Stricker must be spending too much time at the beach. Yang? Maybe he got some bad Kimchi. According to wikipedia his name is actually Yang Yong-eun. I guess Y.Y. Eun didn’t exactly roll off the tongue. But you know the old Shakespearean quote: “A rose by any other name would swing as sweet.”
What's a matter 3irons...
Not interested in golf without Tiger? You sure were quick to get your licks in at the “Clues” article… A little obsessed with Tiger are you? You could be called an “anti-suck-up”….. But then again without Tiger to rail about, you wouldn’t have a whole lot to say. But hey, Happy New Year guy!!
Looking ahead...going for the hat trick!
The bumper for the Sony next week is amazing. It’s the trimuphant return of John Daly!!! Since Michelle Wie Inc. has finally come to it’s senses and Hawaii’s favority son Tadd Fugikawa didn’t set the world on fire either on The Nationwide Tour or Q-School, they’ve turned to the most tried and true attention getter (well at least until Nov. 27th of last year) in golf. I offer the pairing of John Daly andf Bubba Watson: “The Battle of the Canons”.
Is Fujikawa 18 yet ? Wasn’t he 15 a couple of years ago when he had his big showing at the Sony ? (I thought Michelle Wie was Hawaii’s favorite son…oh wait…she’s not playing PGA Tour events…at least for a while…maybe when she gets her Masters invite ?) ;-)
Here’s something – with all the talk over the last couple of months about getting American players to “broaden their horizons” and play more internationally (even though they would be taking tournament spots from Euro Tour members) – nobody has mentioned the Africa Open going on in South Africa this week. Beautiful golf course – warm weather (being the middle of summer there) – and some terrific golf.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
guess I could’ve checked myself – Fujikawa turned 19 yesterday ! (Jan 8, 1991) And we didn’t even send him a card.

CourtG:
I took a look at the African Open scores at TGC (they’re good for that). I hardly recognized a name except for my favoite name in golf, Roope Kakko, and he didn’t make the cut. The names I do know from the Eurpoean Tour are playing the Europe-Asia Cup…or something like that…. Wow, Tadd Fujikawa 19! He never gets mentioned with “the new young players” (guns). What a story he was! Funny, he couldn’t spin his modest resume’ into Fame and Fortune like Wie did. No catchy nickname like “The Big Wiezie” No real ink about him at all………
well – he’s what – 5’5", and not exactly the physique of a Camillo Villegas – as opposed to being nearly 6’ tall, cute, and female. He’s been playing golf for 6 or 7 years, and does amazing things with all that martial arts training to really put power behind the golf ball. His problem is that he has to be a small fish in a big pond as opposed to Wie being a big-ish fish in a smaller pond. He still has a lot of dues to pay to get the experience to be the next Woosy. (get it ? see how I snuck that Wiesy – Woosy/Woosnam thing in there ?) (lol)
Did you expect to see a lot of names you’d recognize in the Africa Open ? They don’t get the publicity here that they get on their own Tours. There are a few names that have been here in the States. Charl Schwartzel has played here a few times. Miles Tunnicliff – but I think his name came up more in the British Open.
They do have some cooler names than we have here – how about Jbe’ Kruger ? Jake Roos ? Pelle Edberg (and that silly looking do rag…or is that an ace bandage around his head) ? I like Titch Moore.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Back to you Court
Woosy/Wiesie…I like that, but for me it’s not an lol, maybe a stm (smiling to myself). Yes, I recognized Charl Schwartzel and MIles Tunnicliff, Jacko VanZeal (sp). I seem to remember him at Q-school a couple of years ago…Maybe played on the Nationwide Tour too? Titch Moore is great name too! as are the others you mentioned. Speaking of Camillo…. He’s done extraordinarily well with his 2 (?) wins and his contortion move on the green. I hada a waist line like his…….when I was 12!
Where's Steve Sands ?
His name is on the graphics for interviews, but I’ve only seen these really lame sitdowns with Lerner. Some of the facial reactions to the Lerner questions have been pretty funny – it’s that “what the heck are you talking about” look.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I THINK,
your finally getting it Court…no matter how ya slice it, Woosy or Wieze, she sure does ‘PLEASEY"…Em, I’m in big D and it’s colder here this AM than yesterday…Court, when I lived in Atlanta, Buckhead area, we never got show, just ice, and with all the hilly streets, I never left the house until about noon…and yup, I lived on Peachtree…hahaha…Hey, be nice…big John next week could surprise a lot of people…just hope he doesn’t get wined and dined too much…I saw a one paragraph article on the African stop…Court, you said a good course..ever play it???,,,STUB
When did you live here ? You’re missing all the fun – 1" of extremely dry powder and there were over 150 wrecks in Dekalb County alone. One on-ramp to I-85 down by the airport had 29 cars piled up. What a town.
Nope – never been to South Africa – though it’s on my wish list. I was speaking just about how beautiful the course is, but it has some seriously tight areas, dense bush guarding fairways, hilly, and some small greens.
I’ll be pulling for JD, too !

Jumpn........So how did you do on round #2????
Inquiring minds want to know….lol
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
Fantasy Golf Qusetion ????
Sorry for the repeat from the other blog but I need an answer. I am currently in second place in my fantasy golf #2 There is a column that says, Rank +/- . Most of the people in my league have a +9 or a -12 or some # in their column and myself and two others have the # 0 in ours. The question is ? What is this column for and why do ony a couple of us have #0 ????
I’m currently in second place.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
I answered on the other thread...
It means how many places you improved or went down from the previous round. Good job on the #2 standing.
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
I saw that
THANKS em,, after further review, I think you are correct.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
None that I could see
I’ll cut and paste it and e mail it to ya in a couple of minutes.

Court
it was back in 68 and 69…You should have seen down town Atlanta with the Ice…I especially liked all the people sliding and falling on their arses I came from Wisconsin, so was used to it…I just thought, you mentioning the dense bush on the fairways…too bad TIGAR isn’t there, would give it a whole new meaning….just thinking….STUB
wow – that was a great year for snow. I was in Ohio and we had a blizzard that year. Got us out of almost a week of school…but didn’t keep anybody off the sled hill…right next to the school. They even had a huge wood and coal burning barrel that was about 8’ tall and at least 10’ across

Schwartzel (sp) comes through!
I realize Ryan is under no obligation to cover much more than the PGA Tour, and some LPGA but a little International coverage might drag us kicking and screaming into a more “world view” of golf. I know Easingwold and Wendy would heartily approve of that….when they thaw out… I wonder how Jbe’ is pronounced?
oh - way to go, Obi-Ping....
…we nearly had RB trained to cover ALL the major and secondary feeder tours AND bring beer…back to the drawing board

'Shamed to say
I only watched Euro Tour this week ‘cos blasted SBS wasn’t shown until gone 11p.m. due to time difference. No excitement in watching SBS the following day, so didn’t join in Fantasy League (which I now regret). Wonder how I would have done with Ogilvy/Kuchar/Cink/Casey throughout? STILL snowbound.
