Great Moments in Phil Mickelson Whining to Get His Way
Phil Mickelson's wedge stunt this week wasn't the first time that Phil has used passive aggressive - and sometimes very blatant - actions to make a point.
In 2005, Mickelson skipped the Tour Championship for the fourth time in five years, citing that he wanted to take his kids trick-or-treating that week. He said earlier in the season that it was "anticlimactic."
The next season, he repeated the same stunt, citing family reasons. Mickelson has repeatedly gushed about the "field trip" value of taking his children to Asia in seasons hence when he plays for seven figure appearance fees there.
Ultimately, those back-to-back no shows at the Tour Championship led to the formation of the FedExCup.
In April 2007, Phil Mickelson missed the pro-am at the Byron Nelson Championship, missing the pro-am because he opted to play in a charity outing in Arkansas. The Tour still allowed Mickelson to play in the event despite a rule that expressly states that players who miss the pro-am cannot play in that tournament. It was a signal of Mickelson's disdain for the PGA Tour's pro-ams.
Later in 2007, once Mickelson beat Woods to win the Deutsche Bank Championship in the second leg of the Playoffs, Mickelson threatened to skip the BMW Championship over the lack of a "balanced" schedule. That meant that Phil wanted a week off somewhere in the Playoffs because he considered it too much to play for four straight weeks and seven out of eight in the summer and fall. He even went so far as to take the gripe public on NBC's air when interviewed after winning in Boston.
Then, as promised, he skipped the BMW Championship. He said in a statement that it was not about sending a message to anyone.
Now, there's a two week gap between the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.
Having not yet lost in any of his nonviolent protests against the things he dislikes about the PGA Tour, Phil has no reason to discontinue his methods of acting out in an effort to get his way. This time, he has placed the PGA Tour in a very difficult position.
They could work out a settlement with Ping that would allow for the banning of the Ping Eye 2s, but that would ultimately open the door to a lawsuit because their local rule would violate the governing body of golf. The PGA Tour has already experienced what kind of legal problems (and costs) can result from instituting its own equipment rules and would be unlikely to do the same. It wouldn't matter anyhow, because Mickelson would then want to bring back the USGA rules since the Ping Eye 2s would be allowed.
You would swear Mickelson is an only child with the way he acts. And that's coming from an observer who is an only child.

From the article…
“This time, he has placed the PGA Tour in a very difficult position.”
…HUH? The PGA tour has placed itself in a very difficult position.
Sounds like someone has an irrational problem with PM, perhaps only children shouldn’t be allowed to be jounalists/bloggers?
It’s kind of funny because it’s evident that you have no grasp of the facts behind the situation. You should probably stop talking unless you actually have some kind of facts to back up your incorrect point of view.

You’re probably right because my grasp of the facts behind the situation comes from reading this article and the one you posted here yesterday about how Phil was using this groove issue like a vendetta against the USGA. So is this latest post of yours an admission that you are either a liar or you don’t know WTF you are talking about?
That’s the worst logic I’ve ever read. Actually, I’ve done at least two dozen articles about grooves, explaining them, and the rationale behind the rule change.

I wasn’t trying to be logical….I was being sarcastic!!!!
You want logic, OK…you accused me of not having a grasp of the facts behind the situation….but yet you NEVER identified anything that I posted that was not factual. So go ahead Mr Logical, refute what I said!
That’s because you actually posted no facts. It’s pretty easy to debunk.

You want a circular argument, fine. I posted this…
“From the article…
"This time, he has placed the PGA Tour in a very difficult position."
…HUH? The PGA tour has placed itself in a very difficult position.
..that, dear sir, is a fact. Now refute it or risk being banned from your own site. You said….
“Here are the things I won’t tolerate:
Name calling
Lack of substance
Use of profanities
The next person that I catch doing that will get banned here. And I will only ban the instigator of it.
It’s ok to be critical of what I write, so long as you:
Don’t resort to personal attacks
Actually have some kind of argument with fact in it "
…your last post definitely lacks substance and has no argument based on fact!
Do you mean the PGA Tour, USGA, or PGA of America?

In fact, I mean Micklesons wedge
is permitted by the USGA and R & A…approved by the PGA of America, following the legal settlement of 1993 with the club manufaterur. Therefore, pre 1990 Ping wedges can be used in tournaments now. The fact that no one decided to close this loophole , they only have themselves to blame. It is no different than players using the broomstick putter..it is not a true golf stroke as such, but is allowed. Mickleson is raising a very good point…clarify the rules. For you to call him a whiner for doing it, is short sighted, for if any game had to have very clear rules, it must be golf.
Actually, it has nothing to do with the PGA of America. They don’t set the rules for PGA Tour events.

The PGA of America approved what the USGA and R&A permitted
thats not setting the rules, only that they agreed with them.
Had the PGA sought clarification on this
the USGA may have acted sooner…Mickleson has brought into sharper focus. Not childish at all, it should be resolved before important events come up.
Mickelson
followed what some of the other players (Daly) had already done. Phil does not agree with the new groove rules, and thus is acting out against the rules. Not only did he present NEW non-conforming clubs, which were rejected. He then went to plan B which was to use the Pings (also non-conforming). No he is not blazing a trail at all here. And yes, he is acting out in a childish manner on this one. Proper protest is to conform to the rule, while handling the situation in an appropriate arena. This tom-foolery is ridiculous. The players using these non-conforming clubs are seeking a competitive advantage over the field. And that is not what golf is all about.

Where does it say they are non conforming ?
As the rules stand, the Ping wedge is legal. Get the rule changed. Thats all they are saying.
Easingwold,
They were declared “non-conforming” in 1990, then Ping sued and got them approved for play on the PGA Tour….this is from Ryan’s story in the “vendetta” thread…
“Mickelson is among at least four players at Torrey Pines using a Ping-Eye 2 wedge that was made 20 years ago and has square grooves. Such grooves now are banned on the PGA Tour because of a new USGA regulation this year that irons have V-shaped grooves.
The square-groove Ping wedges remain legal, however, because of a lawsuit that Ping filed against the USGA that was settled in 1990. Under the settlement, any Ping-Eye 2 made before April 1, 1990, remains approved because it takes precedence over any rule change."
Ryan.....gotta disagree with you
on this one. First the Byron Nelson pro am was missed because he did an outing on Tuesday and because of violent weather and he was unable to fly out of Little Rock for the Nelson Pro Am. I live just southwest of Little Rock and I remember the weather was awful that day….tornado’s and severe thunderstorms. I guess being grounded was a good enough excuse for the PGA to allow him to play. As for the break at the end of the year……many players, including Phil, did not want to play all of the tournaments. Now the “groove” thing…..where were all the accusations of cheating a couple of weeks ago when the first pings were taken out of moth balls? It was talked about, but not to the extent it is now. Phil has always spoken his mind…..maybe we should shoot him.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
By the way......
if you decide to shoot him, F’s & G’s would probably volunteer. I think Wendy has Guido busy this week-end……..
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
In 2007
I gave the PGA Tour a Knucklehead award for letting Mickelson play in the the Byron Nelson. Not because Mickelson failed to make it to TX in time, but because the PGA Tour wasn’t being consistent in how it treats players. In 2005 Chad Campbell wanted to miss the Pro-Am at the Lumber 84 to attend his grandmother’s funeral. The PGA Tour said no, he either plays in the pro-am or he won’t be allowed to play in the tournament. Campbell withdrew.
There are reasons to knock Mickelson but the 2007 Byron Nelson isn’t one of stronger cases saying he’s spoiled. BTw HE did meet with his pro-am partners at lunch. Some players treat their pro-am partners like garbage and wouldn’t have come close to doing that if they missed their tee time.
Well there you have it......
the reason for all the PGA problems…..The 2007 Knucklehead Award……no wonder things are so bad….The tiger problem, sponsor problems, groove problems, etc, etc,…..all because of one little award……Hey Bill, please answer the brown courtesy phone…….
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Bill.....maybe if all your posts
weren’t about YOU and WHAT you did, then maybe I could take you seriously….now, answer freakin phone….
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
If you apparently could read
and had some brain matter instead of shit between your ears you wouldn’t have said every post is about me. You’re an absolute imbecile, I agreed with you, now you’re attacking me. I don’t hide behind a bogus screen name you cowardly jerk.
First, that's Mr. Jackass to you,
and I can read. You started your post with I gave the PGA a Knucklehead award….and you agreed with me…..will that was big of you since what I said was true. Maybe, I can get me one of those Ka-nuckle Head awards…..well, a man can dream, right…..lol
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
And, don't be talking about
my “bogus” screen name…..my great, great, great grandfather used that screen name as he was crossing the great plains in a covered wagon……by the way, who was on the phone??
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Hey EM,
your getting kind of feisty just because ya got out for a couple of rounds before it got colder than Billy’s Arse again…Course, Wendy still hasn’t gotten out and the phrase “barn Sour” comes to mind…Dead on with the Nelson pro-am…I live in Dallas, (to you socially unacceptable, that’s DALLAS IN THE USA OF TEXAS) and it was a blow to a good friend of mine, cause he had bid for Phil in that pro-am…Annyhoooo!!! I think that Phil has always had private reasons for what he does..It does a body good to realize that we have a top notch player with an agenda that doesn’t live or die with Golf…re: all the tier 3-4 players hanging on cause they make more than most other hard working stiffs, see Easing and working too much….I think Ryan is off base with this one…STUB
Feisty? Who me?
Naw, I’m just sitting here in my recliner watching Phil hit the ball like a 10 handicap (get over it One Eye), with a heating pad on my knee. You know you’re getting old when you injure youself playing golf……argggggg. Sunshine, no wind, 52* here today and I’m here talking to you……..Feisty…huh.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
I hope you don't injure yourself
next Sunday watching dem Saints. Kicking yourself for not betting on the Colts can cause serious damage.
Naw.....more likely hurt myself
jumping up everytime the Saints score and when they get a turnover and when they knock Peyton down……probably should increase my insurance.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
FIGJAM at it again
I think it’s the Nascar effect. PGA Tour trying to create controversy, fights in the pits, anything to draw some attention while El Tigre is gone

Wendy darlin,
don’t be too quick to side with EM and the Late Saints…you should have heard what he said about your “neat butt”…Ya don’t suppose MarksKK has this right do ya?…STUB
Em & I have our own Saints
on different sides of the pond, so we’re sticking together on this one.
Should Em or anyone else care to E-admire my “neat butt”, they’re welcome. MarksKK wrote an excellent blog (which I hope he’ll do regularly) but I really don’t think the PGA tour set out to create controversy sans Tiggy.
As you love the Saints, Wendy,
Is Matt your favorate all time player ? That man had some skill…and now he is on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports with Jeff and the gang, do you tune in regular ?
Sadly
my all-time favourite players go back to my Dad’s day (Saints were his team). I didn’t follow them for years after I left the area (defected to Arsenal), but I’d have to support them for old times’ sake in a Hampshire Derby. Not sure that SkySports is ever off in our household.
Perhaps tough to take off
with all that cluttter about?
Aresenal ? Nooo, say it ain't so.
the cheating in football has put me of it a bit, but I still cringe when I think of that day in ’89 when Thomas got that winner.
