Daly Tells Golf Channel He is "Done" With Golf, Explains on Twitter
After a second round 71 at Torrey Pines and having missed his second cut in two tries on the PGA Tour in 2010, John Daly told Golf Channel that he is done with golf.
"I'm done. I'm done." Asked, "Done with what?" Daly answered, "Golf. I can't compete. I can't play like I used to. I can't keep taking spots from guys out here playing this bad. It's not worth it."
That instantly sparked retirement chatter about the two-time major champion. But, on Friday night, Daly reiterated through his Twitter feed that he never meant retirement.
"I never said retirement in anything. I'm simply sayin' I need my time & working through these bad times."
Daly did, though, address the reason why he said he is done: money and skill.
"[M]y financial situation is putting me where I cannot focus on my game. I'm putting too much pressure on myself," he said. "The few sponsors that I have are great but it's not getting me through these times. Maybe my mind may change down the road, but right now I don't have the money to be on the tour."
"I don't like to continue to embarrass myself," adding, "[m]y game has never been the same since my rib injury during the Honda Classic in 2007."
This is not the first time that Daly has said he is done with golf. Last year, after carding an 88 at the Buick Open in Michigan, Daly floated talk of retirement. The odds of him retiring are likely small. Daly needs golf to maintain any kind of stream of income - either what little he earns on course, or what sponsorship money he pulls in because of golf.

If I had a dollar......
for every time I told my wife I was quitting, I’d have enough money to sponsor Daly on tour. Making statements right after missing the cut is always going to get you in trouble, no matter who it is. This game will freakin beat you down. I guess frustration is not just something we “hacks” go through. I actually felt bad for him.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
So you also
go into the carpark after a round and scream “It’s only a game, it’s only a game dammit”? Not for JD and the pros of course.
What's your handicap, Wendy?
Just curious. I won’t tell anyone.
I heard JD's just moved in
to Steve Howe’s apartment. That should staighten him out.
+1
Daly needs to hang around..he humanizes the events…he’s one of us.
"Doing what is right is easy. The problem is knowing what is right".
Sorry man,
He may be one of you, but he’s not one of me…if you get my point. I’m not going to go with that, “none of us are perfect” thing… that’s been over done. Over the years, that’s YEARS, he’s ceased to be a golf story and has become a “character” story. Most everyone will say he squandered an extraordinary talent and so far has been unable to move forward toward a more standard life style. As has been said, his weight loss didn’t bespeak a behavior change, it was a matter of surgical intervention. I wish him well. He IS very good playing the character, John Daly…
I’m with you, jdhud, he’s one of us, and the fact that ping doesn’t like him just makes me like Daly more
nibs:
I don’t dislike the guy, I’m only saying I’m tired of the Daly saga… But knowing you like him makes me like him less…..

ping, you are a givlomh idiot!!!! Your first post that I replied to, contradicts your new claim that you “don’t dislike” John Daly(your double negative, not mine). If you like JD, then please don’t ever like me, or write a paragraph abpout me such as the one you just wrote here disparaging John Daly.
But then for the kicker you write…“But knowing you like him makes me like him less…..”…so you “don’t dislike” (like) him, but you just don’t like him much. Yeah, now I understand….you’re a givlomg idiot! Please go back to TGC where you can truly say that you are one of them.
Certainly don't wanna enter this fray,
but “don’t dislike” is not a double negative. Double negatives end up saying the opposite of what one meant to say, and that isn’t the case here.
So, it ain’t no double negative.
LOL….your first instinct was correct…you should not have entered this fray. Much better to just be thought an idiot, than to post and remove any doubt.
“A double negative is the nonstandard usage of two negatives used in the same sentence so that they cancel each other and create a positive. In Shakespeare’s day, double negatives were considered emphatic, but today, they are considered grammar mistakes.”
I’m not sure but your last sentence, since it’s a triple negative, may be correct.
Nibs....
You could be wrong incorrect off base confused misled a, not quite right on the double negative thing. Dislike is not a negative, but an expression of an emotion. You can say……I like, or I dislike something, and you can also say I don’t like or I don’t dislike something. If I “don’t dislike” something doesn’t mean I like it……as would be the case in a double negative…….whew.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Correct, Em. Ping did not
use a double negative. His negatives didn’t screw up his meaning.
And my last line was an obvious joke, to (almost) everyone.
But keep up the name-calling, which is pure advertising at its best.
And do keep trashing Ryan for no particular reason. When he finally blocks you, there’ll be nary a complaint from the masses.
Then, by all means, start your own blog. You’d have to form a posse to find some readers.
Below, nibwit (sinking to your
level just this one time) are your words from above;
Your first post that I replied to, contradicts your new claim that you "don’t dislike" John Daly (your double negative, not mine).
But kudos on your ability to cut and paste re the definition of a double negative. Some of you best work.
I’m guessin’ you’ve called Shakespeare an idiot too. You’re done with this century.
Em, when I wrote "Keep up the
name calling" I’m sure you realize I wasn’t referring to you, but rather The Alienator.
Not suprised you're not sure.
Boy, that was easy.
em66,
You posted…“Dislike is not a negative”…O really?
dislike definition
dis·like (dis līk′)
transitive verb disliked -·liked′, disliking -·lik′·ing
to have a feeling of not liking; feel aversion to; have objections to
noun
a feeling of not liking; distaste; aversion; antipathy
something disliked
…and then again you said…“If I "don’t dislike" something doesn’t mean I like it……”….well, yes actually it does. Words have meaning for a reason; but I excuse you because you’ve been living in the land of ebonics for so long.
He meant a negative as in double negative, your
original contention. Yikes. How many times were you left back?
TXQ,
I quoted what he said….I’d advise you to do the same if I thought you were capable of participating in this discussion, but since I don’t then just disregard this post.
Discussion?!?! Yeah, right,
like you’re capable of one of those.
Lemme guess … you learned to curse at about age seven and still thinks it’s fun, or helps you make a point.
Nibs.......I still think you're wrong
on this one. If you were to ask me if I dislike you, I could, very correctly, say I don’t dislike you. I don’t have to like you either….I could have no feelings at all, so “don’t dislike” doesn’t mean like. I will call the English department at the local college tomorrow and get a ruling…….“upon further review”…..
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
em66,
Think of it this way….dislike means to have a feeling of not liking, so “don’t dislike” means I do not have a feeling of not liking. Now how many nots are in that clause? Answer: TWO, ergo that’s a double negative.
And insofar as your contention that if you say you don’t dislike me that you don’t have to like me either. That is true, that is a condition called ambivalence. But if that is the case, then you should not be bringing up the emotion of liking in the first place. You could say I don’t like or dislike you, or you could say that you have no feelings toward the object in question. But when you say you like someone or something, it implies that you have some feeling for that someone or something…same thing when you say you dislike someone or something.
To summarize, ping said he didn’t dislike JD, and that is a double negative. But his edification was a secondary intention; the real point was that he had just posted a scathing paragraph denigrating JD and then tries to say that he doesn’t dislike (like) JD. Ping is such an idiot that he doesn’t even know what/whom he likes…thank God I am here to explain it to him!
Ok, I went to the internet
and found a couple of English sites that actually addressed the “I don’t dislike you” phrase. Both sites did indicate that it is a Double Negative (nib you’re correct), but that this and a few other double negatives are proper English. (I am somewhat correct). So, it’s a draw….a double negative that is proper to use.
Also, the 8th web site on the page was Daly Tells Golf Channel He’s Done…..so I clicked on it and it brought up this page. Whatzzz up with that?? It was Nib’s response to Ping about the double negative. Now that’s spooky!!!!
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
"Words Into Type"
states simply that a double negative must convey the opposite of what the writer meant to say.
High points for length. Zero for logic.
Nib’s words: Think of it this way….dislike means to have a feeling of not liking, so "don’t dislike" means I do not have a feeling of not liking. Now how many nots are in that clause? Answer: TWO, ergo that’s a double negative.
Wrong. A double negative has to convey a meaning that the writer did not intend. Double negatives say the opposite of what the writer intended.
Wrong? I asked a question, and answered it…
“Now how many nots are in that clause? Answer: TWO, ergo that’s a double negative.”
…and you say that’s wrong? Too bad I can’t call you any names but I can at least say you’re wrong.
I posted one definition of double negative above, that’s from the LEO (Literacy Education Online) site; here’s another from wisegeek.com…
“A double negative is the use of two negatives in a single clause.”
How many do I need to post before you admit you’re wrong? (That’s a rhetorical question…look it up)
Please do show where you got your erroneous definition of “double negative” that says it has to convey a meaning that the writer did not intend. In the first place, it is the words themselves that convey the meaning. And as my first definition implied, writers during the Shakespearean era sometimes used the “double negative” for emphasis.
Nibs, you are running out of fellow bloggers to call "idiot"
at this rate, you will be done before the Masters.
Please
explain the phrase " I could care less" to me when we Brits say “I couldn’t care less”. With or without double negatives I find it totally confusing.
Oh please!
Don’t be such a dickweed! Stop trying to parse everything… And for heavens sake find something else besides “givlomg idiot”…..and is it “g” or “h”?. You have a knack for being both pompous and loquacious. Go with the 140 twitter limit! Next thing you know you’ll be doing Macer’s “cite me your research” thing. Lighten up, get a perspective. Belly up to the bar and orer an big double of authenticity….
Speaking of loquacious….wrf does your post mean? You say nothing and yet you use so many inelegant words to say nothing.
Nib read above post slowly, or have someone read it to you.
You wrote: ping, you are a givlomh idiot!!!! Your first post that I replied to, contradicts your new claim that you "don’t dislike" John Daly(your double negative, not mine).
So, surely you can see that you’re the only one claiming it’s a double negative.
Hang tough EM,
jist remember we gots Jumpin on the ropes and gonna keep on givin them body shots…wears um down after a while, and they just gives up….As far as OL JOHN goes, I have been in his corner since he drove all night and won the event as an alternate…But I think I’m about wore out from taking head shots offen his actions….I think at this point, a good HEAD DOCTOR should sit down with him, touch whatever needs discussing and lets get this guy cured…I think everything that has been done over the years have been band aids, and that won’t help anymore…He crying out for help, and I sure hope someone qualified does just that…STUB
If anyone wants JD back
on tour, please contribute to his new Stimulus Plan
