I'm Pretty Sure the Morris Family Didn't Play on the PGA Tour
On Golf Channel's telecast yesterday, Rich Lerner said that Bill Haas and his dad Jay became the 8th father-son combo to win on the PGA Tour. Here are the other 7:
- Tom Morris Sr., Tom Morris Jr.
- Willie Park, Willie Park Jr.
- Joe Kirkwood Sr., Joe Kirkwood Jr.
- Jack Burke Sr., Jack Burke Jr.
- Clayton Heafner, Vance Heafner
- Julius Boros, Guy Boros
- Al Geiberger, Brent Geiberger
Let me make this clear: there was NO PGA TOUR when the Morris and Park families won the Open Championship. And no amount of revisionist history should count these two father-son combos on this list.

that is TOO funny – it’s a shame Faldo wasn’t on hand to correct Lerner. I can imagine the look on his face as Lerner brought up the list.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I caught that as well.
The only thing I can figure is that since the Open Championship is now considered a PGA event, they included the Morrises and the Parks. Which remains ludicrous.
An aside: Young Tom’s story may well be the most tragic in the history of this game.

I didn’t watch it, but if Lerner said…“Rich Lerner said that Bill Haas and his dad Jay became the 8th father-son combo to win a PGA Tour event”…instead of what you posted…“Rich Lerner said that Bill Haas and his dad Jay became the 8th father-son combo to win on the PGA Tour.”, then he is correct to include Old and Young Tom.
Honestly, that’s semantics because the Open is now considered a PGA Tour event.

I didn’t know that the PGA Tour included Open tournaments from before they actually became the PGA Tour.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I’m guessing Lerner didn’t pull that from has vast knowledge of golf trivia, someone fed the information to him.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
This is certainly the case....
…as there was a prepared graphic.
Probably some tech in the truck showing off!

Lerner Doesn't Know Golf History...At Alll....
He had another faux pas a couple of weeks ago, talking to Stewart Cink about having the original Claret Jug for a year.
He then talked about drinking from the same jug as Tom Morris Sr.
Two problems here: first, Morris Sr. never won the Claret Jug. He last won the Open Championship in 1867, and that was before Tom Morris Jr. retired the Champion’s Belt in 1872.
Secondly, the original Jug has not been given to the winner since 1927. A full-size replica is given and after a year, a smaller version given permanently.
This is symptomatic of the Golf Channel — they are style over substance and they are insulting to the game itself in their ignorance.
Both are your
initial reactions, PG.
(delayed Groaner alert)
Vance Heafner
His being counted on the list is a sign of the PGA Tour playing ping pong with their records. Heafner’s only triumph on the tour was at the team event. It was counted as a tour win when it took place, but for a while in the early part of the last decade, wins like his weren’t being counted. Now the PGA Tour is back counting them. Aren’t these records supposed to be etched in stone not etch a sketched from decade to decade?
Interesting
Vance used to be the head pro here in town at Prestonwood, and left under some strange circumstances.

LMAO
And some people tell me that I’m to hard on TGC’s poor journalism and fact checking. Lerner is the worst. He spends to much time adjusting his Sansabelts and hair piece and little time checking facts that are handed to him to read. He has no prior golf of sports journalism backround prior to joining TGC. I wonder what brain trust decided to let go of Cellini and keep Lerner. Shaking Head <><><>

Brain Trust????
There is no evidence of a Brain Trust….Brain Fart….probably.

You're not going to go off on Lerner at every opportunity like you do on Woods are you?

PIIIIIIIIIIIING
“Say it isn’t so” I post my comments just like everyone else as it relates to the article thats written. Some of my comments might be a little cheecky at times but we are all entitled to our opinions. Ping whatcha gonna blame me for next, ? being a hater ? I have no dislike for TW or any players for that matter, I watch golf for golf and thanks to the sport itself I make a decent living. One thing for sure is that you will never find me climbing on the bandwagon.

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
LOL
They always introduce the team as “THE PANEL OF EXPERTS” Sadly there are a large percentage of viewers out there like Ping for instance , j/k that rely on them for golf gospel. Its mostly the “fringe fans” that don’t know any better

You could always just watch the golf and tune out the talking heads. [insert your deity of choice] created the MUTE button for a reason.

True dianemarie
However, I do like to hear the player interviews. The sad part of all this is that TGC touts themselves as “Golfs Home” I betcha Arnie caught that error and cringed.

True Ping
However, he sold it long ago when it was “Worth Something”

TGC
I have no idea what TGC is worth. I do know Comcast thought it was worth spending a good deal on to acquire.
