We May Know What Awaits Tiger Upon His Return to Golf
I've held since the Tiger Woods scandal broke out that things will not be the same for him in the galleries when he returns to the PGA Tour. While golf fans are generally respectful, especially compared to the world's other great sports, there are always fans who shoot their mouths off first and ask questions later. We've seen that at the Ryder Cup in spades, and also at other tournaments - for instance, when a fan got tossed at last year's Players Championship for catcalling "FIGJAM" at Phil Mickelson.
Mickelson is not the only player who has endured a surly drunken fan. So far in his career, though, Tiger Woods has been relatively free of that kind of heckling. That is, until he returns to playing golf between the ropes.
In this case, this picture from the Australian Open in tennis is probably worth a thousand words:
via cache.gawker.com
This may be what awaits Woods. It will be interesting to see how he handles being an anti-hero to a noticeable number of fans in the future - something that will be a definitive shift from his former status as a player that enjoyed near-universal adulation. It is inevitable that Woods will hear mocking, salty slurs from the gallery.
For a man who already has rabbit ears at least as sensitive as Colin Montgomerie's, this may be unnerving. While it's said that when he was a young player his father would do everything possible to distract him while he was swinging, Woods has been known to go ballistic when a fan makes a noise or, God forbid, a photographer clicks a camera at the wrong time. He's tacitly approved his caddy, Steve Williams, response of taking a fan's camera and breaking it. He's also been known to be rather sharp towards fans who break decorum, so we already know that Tiger may not be as impenetrable as he may seem on the surface.
Whenever he returns to golf, that zen-like focus will certainly be tested as never before.

Is
The older woman wearing the red shirt, (center right) in the picture pointing at the sign as to suggest she too was with Tiger. LOL just an observation.

The New
I’m new to this blog, so I feel maybe just a tiny little bit of empathy to Tiger, but you have to love the Aussies. No niceties, no apologies, just Aussies being Aussies.
Good Morning and Welcome c'np
Good Luck with tht empathy thing here…

Maybe if Tiger plays this year,
he should start at the British Open. St Andrews, some of the most knowlagable fans there can be. And maybe with just enough decentcy not to resort to cheap shots. i would hope so anyway. Otherwise, at his own tounament in December.
yes – those British Tabloids would NEVER write anything untoward ;-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I was just kidding. And that picture isn’t of golf fans either…at least not golf fans at a golf tournament. You won’t see anything like that at a golf tournament…at least not on TV. If someone tried to put up a sign like that at The Masters, they would be escorted off the property, badges confiscated and removed from the list.
Then again, get a few pints under the belt of a salty Scot and there might be a few phrases uttered.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
The longer Tiger emains silent,
the worse it will get. You raise a great point…the British tabloids will be merciless with Tiger that week, should he play. Whatever is true or not, they will make it up anyway, crap sells !
I think the Scots
are the least likely to make a salty comment at St. Andrews. The problem is that it only takes ONE idiot to call out a comment which will “hit the fan” so to speak.
No TW fan here, as you know, but sincerely hope that if it is going to happen anywhere, it won’t be at St. Andrews.
So true, Wendy.
It’ll only take one idiot. Let’s all hope Joe Wilson isn’t a golf fan.
Well, thats my point
I would hope it is least likely at St Andrews…if it did anywhere, I would find it embarrassing for golf. Tiger has been a prat, but as I have said many times, he is not golf.
Yep, Not Golf Fans...
…but you don’t need signs to mutter things out loud and we all know different stories about stuff that has come from the gallery.
Heck, it is legion in the history of golf, going all the way back to Young Tom Morris playing away games from his home course, the treatment that “Fat Jack” Nicklaus got in Oakmont in 1962 and so forth and so on.
The point holds, however, golf crowd or no — Woods is less likely to lead the charmed life inside the ropes than he had in the past.
Welcome
aboard CNP…hope ya got a thick skin, cause this site can get “rough as a cob” sometimes…Jumpin…I’m waiting for the “get in the hole tiger”..I think that will happen out in AZ..Something to do with rowdy fans in the desert…Too much suds…Do ya think ol 3irns runs a beer stand out there?…Yep, can’t hardly wait….Hey EM…another lefto radio station in the toilet…Air America filed for chapter 7..Al Frankin used to broadcast on it…The conservatives will rise again…Common Easy, let us have our fun with him..and how can you call them cheap shots…they’ll probably be very inventive….STUB
I'm sure they will mate..
but not during the Open…would leave a sour taste on the week. The Open is more important than any player.
I should hope so. The Open is one of golf’s true religious holidays and despite the changes in the modern game it is almost always played on a course so rich in history that it reaches back to the very beginnings of true tournament golf.
The only changes I would make to the Open are to hold one again at Portmarnock and if at all possible another one at Prestwick.
Hey Spell..that
was good, but you did open the door for OMP…you have to be carefull about opening doors, cause you never know who/what will get through…STUB
As long as we got the TIGAR
thing going again, and because Court did the Lone Ranger bit, here’s a little something to chew on….It happened In AZ, right next to 3 irns place….It was a dusty trading post out in the middle of noware…there was an Indian standing there, it was Kemosabe…Tonto, faithful companion to the Lone Ranger…because things were a bit quiet over on the gettin the bad guys side, Tonto was working the week end shift at the trading post….A bus load of tourists pulled in, mostly middle aged women….and every time one passed him, Tonto would raise his arm and say “chance”..a couple of ladies had been watching, and finally one went to him and said “I thought Indians said how”…to which Tonto replied, Lady, me know how, all me want is chance…LOL…STUB
Indian racism !
thinker,…I strenuously object to blatant racial profiling ! Whaddya mean “over-ruled!” Why-I-odda…." LOL……………………….Z.
you're still away,...choke on it !
It may not be so bad
The majority of golf fans are respectful, well mannered, and carry themselves more class than that. Yes there will be the drunken “screaming get in the hole” type to deal with and there’s probably not a lot that can be done about that. But I think if Tiger’s smart and just ignores those individuals, it will be short lived and become few and far between.
Roll Tide !!
Yea right,
and it’s gonna snow in August too…. it won’t be just get in the hole, it’s gonna be “get in the hole TIGAR”….STUB
surely.....
A golfer who can win the US Open with a torn ACL, and leg fractures, can stand a little “poke” from the galleries. Let’s remember he has many supporters too, they will be boisterous in his support. What may break out is some gallery tussles, which would be new to golf also. What it all adds up to is interest. Which golf 2K10 needs more than anything. Sad as it is…….the tour will exploit what ever publicity it can get this year. gonna be interesting.

Does anyone honestly believe the
tour will have any tolerance for signs or obnoxious fans? Once they toss out the first 100 or so, it will quiet down. I’d like to think they would do the same for any golfer.
Ryan, you gotta love these new guys. They have increased your comment count dramatically. Who cares only 10% of them are worth reading…

OEG.....
I guess we just have more time to blog. Maybe we should all sit around all day trying to figure out why we shouldn’t trust the handicap system…..ugh.
WHO DAT!
Saints are no longer killing me!!!!!!!!
Commenting on a blog is not blogging in my opinion.
And for those of us who play tournament golf at our clubs and on the am tours, the handicap system’s inequities are quite near and dear to our hearts.
by Old Man Par on Jan 25, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions
OMP......I have played on
a tour for the past 7 years, and the handicap system is not perfect, nor will it ever be. Our tour had done a great job in bringing equity to the players. If your expectations of a handicap system is perfection, you will always be disappointed. If you guys, (OEG) have a perfect system, I’d love to hear it. Our tour bit the dust last year when the owner stole over $75 thousand from our Tour Championship. First prize was $20K…..I had won over $14K over the years and loved playing for the money, so I’m hoping for another tour to start up here. Your input on the perfect handicap system would be appreciated.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Tours like that keep a pretty good eye on sandbagging – the cheaters generally don’t last more than a week or two.
I always get a kick out of the reverse-sandbaggers who write and report low scores to get a low handicap, then when it comes tournament time and they have to play with legitimate low handicappers….errr…indexers….they get their clocks cleaned and complain the whole way around that they never play courses this long or they just don’t have their “A” game today.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Yeah, I've heard all the stories
Our tour used only tournament rounds in calculating the handicaps and had built in protection against the “baggers”. Exceptional round rules, probation period low round limits and other things protected the integrity of the handicaps. Our tour paid out almost $400k during 2007, so there was a lot to cheat for. The average winning score was around 71, so the system seemed to work well. Most people wouldn’t play if they didn’t feel protected by the system.

Try reading your 5-6 comments on this post and tell me what you would call what you have written. It’s not on topic and it’s not in the least bit funny. Do you have a name for it?

Ryan, I might stop using my real name and address, because
this knucklehead might come to Baltimore and get both of us.
And, oh yeah, Go Saints..!! Did you the look on Favre’s face when the FG was good? Priceless.
The game was a little sloppy, but I would love a Super Bowl even close to as good as this game tonight…

One Eye......I'm not gonna let
your moronic comments upset me tonight. Go ahead and post a picture of all your Pulitzer prizes and then we might actually read some of your dribble. And yes, I do know the handicap system…but that’s for another day too. You can sleep tonight, as I can’t think of anything I’ve lost in Baltimore, so I have no reason to visit…..
WHO DAT Going to the Super Bowl!!!!
Saints are no longer killing me!!!!!!!!
One Eye ?
Your comment above regarding the Super Bowl and people coming to Baltimore to get ya have nothing to do with the topic of OMP posting. So are you guilty of what you just got finished spewing about “US” new people. This my friend is an open “worldwide forum” and you my friend appear to be the only one that is complaining. I’m not usually one to say anything about anyone that comments in any blog as we all have the right to our opinions and comments, but your way out of line here my friend. I’ve read many of your “POSTINGS” and I can’t see anything in any of them that would win you a Peobody Award. About 12 of us joined waggleroom, having left TGC. This moving recomendation “BY ME” came as a result of a guy I played golf with in New Zealand last December. He recomended this site highly. Your whining to Ryan, saying, “only 10% of our comments are worth reading” , is just your opinion. Nothing more nothing less. If our entry into your private boys “n” girls club bothers you that much than I would recomend joining a new club somewhere out in cyberspace. To the rest of the waggleroom golf membership “THANKS FOR HAVING US”. I certainly like it here and I know for a fact that many of the 12 that came with me, enjoy it as well.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
One Eye or Black Eye???......
Jumpn………With all your boxing experience, ole One Eye should be worried about your trip to Baltimore…..I’ll bet he’s the “life” of the party with absolutely no sense of humor, either that or he has something against blond wigs, fake boobs, and stick on lips…..or maybe he has those things hidden under his bed???? What a grouch!
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
em66 brother
I’m not planning any trips to Baltimore anytime soon. In my hayday I did fight at the Provident Civic Center, now called the “Dunkin Donuts Center” . Vinny Pazienza and myself have remained good friends over the years and the closest I come to Balt. is by phone. Besides I’m getting to old for fighting. LOL Ok now I’m gonna get blamed for being off topic. “Seconds Out Baby” jumpn/progolf/the wrecking ball
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
wow – Vinny Pazienza – there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. What a great fighter.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
court
You can find Vinny Paz. ringside reporting live on channel CN8. Usually on Sat . afternoons. Vinny was a great fighter in his hayday and I have much respect for him, but he should have called it quits earlier in his career. Gawd I miss the days of him and I drinking at the bar at the origional Biltmore Hotel.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
what’s CN8 ? That’s not one of my Comcast channels.
he was always fun to watch in the ring. the man had no fear. he should be a part of the boxing broadcasts more than most of the guys they have these days…including George “watch this big fake smile” Foreman.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Yeah, that glued-on smile fell short of
authentic. And he constantly contradicted himself. Took too many shots to his grill perhaps?
CN8 court
CN8 had been a super-regional channel serving Comcast customers in Baltimore; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Harrisburg, Pa.; and D.C. It is splitting into two channels, each of which will be called the Comcast Network. One in Philadelphia will serve the Philadelphia area, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. The one based in Washington will serve Baltimore and Washington. Thats all I know about CN8 up your way. CN8 is a comcast owned and operated channel, just like TGC. Hey now, I go back to the “Forman Days” myself, and he was always very approachable and kind to all. Truth be known though, I was a BIG fan of the Larry Holmes ( the Easton Assassin ) in that era. Hey NOW, If we don’t stay on TOPIC here with out Commenting , Blogging, Posting or drivel, ONE EYE will come in and blame us for non-conforming. jes sayin
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
progolf/jumpn,
Well said my friend.
One-eyed Golfer Guy,
On the subject of this thread, I agree with your take…“tour will have any tolerance for signs or obnoxious fans? Once they toss out the first 100 or so, it will quiet down. I’d like to think they would do the same for any golfer” I promise to read all your posts in the future and comment on them…(be careful what you ask for)..lol
OEG is a good blogger
but I frequently shout at him on his own blogs.
One Eye......I'm still waiting
for your “improved” handicap system. I would guess that you wouldn’t be so critical of the current system, unless you had something better to offer, so let us know what ya got. Also please keep your reply on topic and don’t try to be funny, as only about 10% of your comments are worth reading…..??
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Em
You can read it on his own website. But it ain’t necessarily so.
Wendy.....will I have to read more than 10% of his stuff??
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Well, I read it all
but I only leave snarky comments on 10% of it:)
Wendy.....
Be honest…..is it just me. or are some of these “bloggers” overly impressed with themselves?? I read some of their posts and then spend the next 20 minutes scratching my head…..I’m trying to be nice here, but…..well, I’ll leave it alone.
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
Humour is a funny thing (did TXQ say that?)
I suppose if it’s a funny blog and some of us don’t get it, then it can be irritating. Conversely if a serious blog, and we kid around on it, it might get up a few noses. I’m as guilty of the latter posting as anyone, (led astray).
Life’s short enough, Em – blow them a kiss – at worst it will irritate the hell out of them.
Great point.....again. You're really on your game today!
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
I'm gonna wait till Wendy's
laptop crashes again before I reload. (J/K)
I'm on borrowed time
on this PC, but when I get my new laptop tomorrow p.m. (installation permitting), I’m going to be gunning for a few people.
Read an article this w/e which starts “The futility of golf, an appalling waste of the gift of life, has been insufficiently acknowledged”. The swine!! Except there were some witty asides in the article such as ""John F. Kennedy’s claim that if I don’t have a woman for three days, I get terrible headaches has to be treated with caution because Mrs. Kennedy, while indubitably a woman, was not quite what he had in mind."
"I’m going to be gunning for a few people."
Wendy…..Let me be the first in line to apologize for anything that I may have said that would be offensive to you, your family, your city, your country, your continent, your world…..whew, that about covers it…….have fun with your new machine….lol
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
You wimp….I’ve got court threatening me, you don’t see me grovelling(but then I probably would if it was Mrs. court…lol)
Yahoooo!
New laptop installed.
Em, I’m truly sorry I savaged your ankles. Golf deprivation/laptop collapsing half way through comments was affecting my temperate temperament.
Now where did I leave that 7 iron? I’m sure I asked for it to be installed on here.
Keep going
My eyes are narrowed – my trigger-finger is itchy – I have you in my sights ……i
And sorry to hear about your
narrow eyes. Perhaps if you had your nostrils widened, that would offset?
(J/K, but I’m glad you’re back online.)
Not trying to be provacative or anything
but has it occured to anyone that the US desperately needs TW back, whilst the ROW is um – indifferent?
Not surprised Savile Row
is indifferent. Tiger wears Nike.
I would like it noted
that I made the first golf/TW related comment appearing on here in days – and look what I got for my trouble. Not that I’m sore loser or anything. Obviously.
Even if I did spell " provocative" incorrectly.
And how about that Kenny Perry playing in Doha? I mean, I’m happy for him to be there, but shouldn’t he be getting some (US) stick for not being at Torrey Pines?
