We May Know What Awaits Tiger Upon His Return to Golf

I've held since the Tiger Woods scandal broke out that things will not be the same for him in the galleries when he returns to the PGA Tour.  While golf fans are generally respectful, especially compared to the world's other great sports, there are always fans who shoot their mouths off first and ask questions later.  We've seen that at the Ryder Cup in spades, and also at other tournaments - for instance, when a fan got tossed at last year's Players Championship for catcalling "FIGJAM" at Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson is not the only player who has endured a surly drunken fan.  So far in his career, though, Tiger Woods has been relatively free of that kind of heckling.  That is, until he returns to playing golf between the ropes.

In this case, this picture from the Australian Open in tennis is probably worth a thousand words:

500x_alg_tiger_medium

via cache.gawker.com

This may be what awaits Woods.  It will be interesting to see how he handles being an anti-hero to a noticeable number of fans in the future - something that will be a definitive shift from his former status as a player that enjoyed near-universal adulation.  It is inevitable that Woods will hear mocking, salty slurs from the gallery.

For a man who already has rabbit ears at least as sensitive as Colin Montgomerie's, this may be unnerving.  While it's said that when he was a young player his father would do everything possible to distract him while he was swinging, Woods has been known to go ballistic when a fan makes a noise or, God forbid, a photographer clicks a camera at the wrong time.  He's tacitly approved his caddy, Steve Williams, response of taking a fan's camera and breaking it.  He's also been known to be rather sharp towards fans who break decorum, so we already know that Tiger may not be as impenetrable as he may seem on the surface.

Whenever he returns to golf, that zen-like focus will certainly be tested as never before.

The older woman wearing the red shirt, (center right) in the picture pointing at the sign as to suggest she too was with Tiger. LOL just an observation.

The New

I’m new to this blog, so I feel maybe just a tiny little bit of empathy to Tiger, but you have to love the Aussies. No niceties, no apologies, just Aussies being Aussies.

Maybe if Tiger plays this year,

he should start at the British Open. St Andrews, some of the most knowlagable fans there can be. And maybe with just enough decentcy not to resort to cheap shots. i would hope so anyway. Otherwise, at his own tounament in December.

by Easingwold on Jan 22, 2010 12:14 PM EST reply actions

yes – those British Tabloids would NEVER write anything untoward ;-)

I was just kidding. And that picture isn’t of golf fans either…at least not golf fans at a golf tournament. You won’t see anything like that at a golf tournament…at least not on TV. If someone tried to put up a sign like that at The Masters, they would be escorted off the property, badges confiscated and removed from the list.

Then again, get a few pints under the belt of a salty Scot and there might be a few phrases uttered.

The longer Tiger emains silent,

the worse it will get. You raise a great point…the British tabloids will be merciless with Tiger that week, should he play. Whatever is true or not, they will make it up anyway, crap sells !

by Easingwold on Jan 22, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Scots

are the least likely to make a salty comment at St. Andrews. The problem is that it only takes ONE idiot to call out a comment which will “hit the fan” so to speak.

No TW fan here, as you know, but sincerely hope that if it is going to happen anywhere, it won’t be at St. Andrews.

by WendyUK on Jan 22, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

So true, Wendy.

It’ll only take one idiot. Let’s all hope Joe Wilson isn’t a golf fan.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Jan 22, 2010 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well, thats my point

I would hope it is least likely at St Andrews…if it did anywhere, I would find it embarrassing for golf. Tiger has been a prat, but as I have said many times, he is not golf.

by Easingwold on Jan 22, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, Not Golf Fans...

…but you don’t need signs to mutter things out loud and we all know different stories about stuff that has come from the gallery.

Heck, it is legion in the history of golf, going all the way back to Young Tom Morris playing away games from his home course, the treatment that “Fat Jack” Nicklaus got in Oakmont in 1962 and so forth and so on.

The point holds, however, golf crowd or no — Woods is less likely to lead the charmed life inside the ropes than he had in the past.

by Old Man Par on Jan 22, 2010 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

“golf crowd or no” ? I’m confused. I thought it was the fan support you were talking about. If it’s not the crowds, what “charmed life” are you talking about ? Everything else is about performance.

And when Tiger wins – the crowds will be there.

by Easingwold on Jan 22, 2010 12:23 PM EST reply actions

I should hope so. The Open is one of golf’s true religious holidays and despite the changes in the modern game it is almost always played on a course so rich in history that it reaches back to the very beginnings of true tournament golf.

The only changes I would make to the Open are to hold one again at Portmarnock and if at all possible another one at Prestwick.

It may not be so bad

The majority of golf fans are respectful, well mannered, and carry themselves more class than that. Yes there will be the drunken “screaming get in the hole” type to deal with and there’s probably not a lot that can be done about that. But I think if Tiger’s smart and just ignores those individuals, it will be short lived and become few and far between.

surely.....

A golfer who can win the US Open with a torn ACL, and leg fractures, can stand a little “poke” from the galleries. Let’s remember he has many supporters too, they will be boisterous in his support. What may break out is some gallery tussles, which would be new to golf also. What it all adds up to is interest. Which golf 2K10 needs more than anything. Sad as it is…….the tour will exploit what ever publicity it can get this year. gonna be interesting.

Commenting on a blog is not blogging in my opinion.

And for those of us who play tournament golf at our clubs and on the am tours, the handicap system’s inequities are quite near and dear to our hearts.

by Old Man Par on Jan 25, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

OMP......I have played on

a tour for the past 7 years, and the handicap system is not perfect, nor will it ever be. Our tour had done a great job in bringing equity to the players. If your expectations of a handicap system is perfection, you will always be disappointed. If you guys, (OEG) have a perfect system, I’d love to hear it. Our tour bit the dust last year when the owner stole over $75 thousand from our Tour Championship. First prize was $20K…..I had won over $14K over the years and loved playing for the money, so I’m hoping for another tour to start up here. Your input on the perfect handicap system would be appreciated.

Tours like that keep a pretty good eye on sandbagging – the cheaters generally don’t last more than a week or two.

I always get a kick out of the reverse-sandbaggers who write and report low scores to get a low handicap, then when it comes tournament time and they have to play with legitimate low handicappers….errr…indexers….they get their clocks cleaned and complain the whole way around that they never play courses this long or they just don’t have their “A” game today.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Jan 25, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I've heard all the stories

Our tour used only tournament rounds in calculating the handicaps and had built in protection against the “baggers”. Exceptional round rules, probation period low round limits and other things protected the integrity of the handicaps. Our tour paid out almost $400k during 2007, so there was a lot to cheat for. The average winning score was around 71, so the system seemed to work well. Most people wouldn’t play if they didn’t feel protected by the system.

Your comment above regarding the Super Bowl and people coming to Baltimore to get ya have nothing to do with the topic of OMP posting. So are you guilty of what you just got finished spewing about “US” new people. This my friend is an open “worldwide forum” and you my friend appear to be the only one that is complaining. I’m not usually one to say anything about anyone that comments in any blog as we all have the right to our opinions and comments, but your way out of line here my friend. I’ve read many of your “POSTINGS” and I can’t see anything in any of them that would win you a Peobody Award. About 12 of us joined waggleroom, having left TGC. This moving recomendation “BY ME” came as a result of a guy I played golf with in New Zealand last December. He recomended this site highly. Your whining to Ryan, saying, “only 10% of our comments are worth reading” , is just your opinion. Nothing more nothing less. If our entry into your private boys “n” girls club bothers you that much than I would recomend joining a new club somewhere out in cyberspace. To the rest of the waggleroom golf membership “THANKS FOR HAVING US”. I certainly like it here and I know for a fact that many of the 12 that came with me, enjoy it as well.

CN8 had been a super-regional channel serving Comcast customers in Baltimore; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Harrisburg, Pa.; and D.C. It is splitting into two channels, each of which will be called the Comcast Network. One in Philadelphia will serve the Philadelphia area, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. The one based in Washington will serve Baltimore and Washington. Thats all I know about CN8 up your way. CN8 is a comcast owned and operated channel, just like TGC. but has it occured to anyone that the US desperately needs TW back, whilst the ROW is um – indifferent?

Not surprised Savile Row

is indifferent. Tiger wears Nike.

I would like it noted

that I made the first golf/TW related comment appearing on here in days – and look what I got for my trouble. Not that I’m sore loser or anything. Obviously.

Even if I did spell " provocative" incorrectly.

And how about that Kenny Perry playing in Doha? I mean, I’m happy for him to be there, but shouldn’t he be getting some (US) stick for not being at Torrey Pines?
