Why the Bob Hope Classic Has No Sponsor
In today's Desert Sun, Larry Bohannan makes his case for why the Bob Hope Classic - going unsponsored for the second consecutive year - is worthy of an $8-10 million investment by a title sponsor. He highlights the tradition, the crowd, the pro-am experience, and other goodies that made the event so great when everyone's favorite USO ambassador was calling the shots.
Now, though, the Hope is in possibly the worst place that a fledgling tournament can be on the PGA Tour schedule. Not only is its date a huge problem, but so is the location. As, too, does the pro-am component pose a huge problem. In other words, everything that once made the Hope great, now weighs it down on the schedule.
The reason why Torrey Pines was able to secure a title sponsor almost a week away from the start of tournament week is because of the field it typically generates. Tiger would be there had he not crashed his car. Phil is usually there. For most of the elite on the PGA Tour, Torrey Pines kicks off the season because it is the first event on the US mainland. Further, it is played on a major championship golf course. And it is in San Diego (German for "whale's vagina"), which rarely has poor weather. And the players have no pro-am obligations during the competition. Basically, everything about the event is attractive to players which results in a solid field every season.
The Hope is not so lucky anymore. The rotation of courses in the desert has been in turmoil for the last several years. Fortunately, the Classic Club is out of the rotation. Most players found the course to be objectionable, particularly since the wind is very strong there during the January time frame. It made the experience tougher for players who want a nice way to ease into the year. It also made rounds even longer over the first four days because of having amateurs in each group. Tour players already take five hours to get around with other pros. Add in some amateurs and more than a fourth of the day could be consumed playing a round of golf.
More than that, the Hope lacks a real voice behind it. It was great that Arnie Palmer stepped in last year to host as a favor to the event. Unfortunately, that came on the heels of the unceremonious booting of George Lopez from that job. Like his late night show or not, but G.Lo would promote the hell out of the Hope were he still the host. Nightly, free press - even if the show is not all that funny? Way better than what they have now. God bless the very quotable Yogi Berra, '10 tournament host, but even his Aflac commercials are not on TV now.
The Hope also is trying to compete with what is arguably the strongest international draw of the European Tour's schedule. Abu Dhabi has its turn this week to compete with Torrey, but is still losing that battle for the attention of global elite, though the tide is turning. The Hope has the misfortune of battling against the Dubai Desert Classic next week. Last season, it faced off against the Qatar Masters and had the biggest negative difference in Official World Golf Ranking points. The Qatar Masters offered 54 first place points to 32 at the Hope. Dubai will be worse.
In other words, why would anyone invest in the Hope?
The PGA Tour would have to destroy the tournament or its own business rules in order to increase its profile. It would have to admit defeat to the European Tour, which it does not do. It would have to prohibit or limit players from using their three exemptions to play on other tours during the PGA Tour year. It would have to change the date of the Hope. They would have to abandon the pro-am format. Or some combination of those three.
Before anyone could make the sale to a potential sponsor, the PGA Tour would have to make a tough sell to the Hope and itself.

As much fun as the Hope is to watch for 5 days, and all the tradition it has – these guys don’t want to play 6 hour rounds for 4 days, then shift into tournament mode for Sunday. It’s a brutal grind. Add to that the weather this time of year and it gets even tougher. Looking at the weather reports, they could be in for either a very wet or very windy and cold week out there with possible snow. El Nino is building up – and last time it was running, the So Cal stretch was under water almost every week. These things, mixed with Yogi Berra as the face of the tournament, don’t add to a lot of sponsors lining up. How about 3 or 4 “title” sponsors to split the load ?
I thought Dubai was the strongest field – not Abu Dhabi.
Side note on Abu Dhabi – the full field will have to have the new grooves in the bag this week. Until now, they were allowed to use the old “modern” grooves – but that ends this week. Could be interesting.

Pardon me for waxing nostalgic… I became a Craig Stadler fan when he won the Hope in a playoff over Lanny Watkins. At the time he was the first Pro to win a tournament while having a beard… Who would ever think weather would be a negative in the Coachella Valley ? it’s likely "The Bob Hope Desert Classic will be the answer to a trivia question in the near future. The Las Vegas event was pared to the standard four rounds years ago to save it. It’s not inconceivable that the Nelson could disappear. I read this morning that Japan Airlines filed for bankruptcy. JAL was a title sponsor on the LPGA. This can’t bode well for that tour. The media would have us believe the economic crisis is coming to and end…Looks like it may be lasting for quite some time. Dubai was once bullet proof…not any more…
JAL is not an LPGA title sponsor
pingforever, JAL hasn’t been a title sponsor on the LPGA Tour since 2000. Before you post please check your information. Another thing, as an economic major, i can say that the economy is improving. Job growth always lags about 6 months to a year after a recession ends, just like job losses lag behind the start of a recession by about the same time. You need to dig a little deeper before you post.
Whassup?
It’s been 10 years since the last JAL Big Apple Classic? In a lame effort to save myself, I did say JAL WAS a title sponsor. And as a function of the bankruptcy they won’t be returning. But that’s not my only error. Craig Stadler did not win the Hope with a beard. He was the first pro to PLAY with a full beard. It was in fact Lanny that won.
Ping.....
Unfreakin Believable!!! Two errors in one post! Yeah, Whassup? For your “transgressions” you are remanded to the “Bloggers Addiction” clinic in Mississippi. During your 6 week “visit” you will not be allowed to blog, no masterblogging……and NO LOL’s or LMAO’s. We will need a full report when you return.
Saints are no longer killing me!!!!!!!!
I know, I know....em66
Maybe it was Blue Monday that was responsible… Unfortunately by responding you’ve now become an enabler… No clinics for me! I’m going to watch archival Brit Hume shows instead.
Ok, Ping...That's it......
You’re headed to Mississippi……“Blue Monday”……I think not! How about Black Tuesday. Your flight leaves at 3pm.
Saints are no longer killing me!!!!!!!!
I'm siding with Ping
on this one…Ryan, who in their right mind (corporate wise that is) would sink 8-10 mil. in a soon to be defunct tour stop…Not only would the board of directors force you out, they would bodily throw you out….and the stock holders would be waiting with the tar and feathers…Now if we could persuade Court and Jumpin to put their funds together, maybe it could be revived…If not, lets just hold the funeral and be done with it…It’s going back to shareholder equity, and never mind all the goodie frills of years past….See, Ol Timmy has another wrinkle on his brow….goodie, goodie….STUB
I used to enjoy watching
Jack Lemmon play this tourney. He’d hack it up for approximately 18 holes but loved every minute of it. Great guy.
And
rumer has it he never took lessons between the years…Don’t know if that’s true or not, but his play kinnda bears it out…Clint Eastwood had a classic comment, one year when Lemmon had on a new yellow outfit…Can’t remember the lines, but I do remember Phil Harris rolling on the ground laughing….Never made the cut did he?…STUB
Phil Harris
was hilarious. Ahead of his time. Like Ernie Kovacs, aka Percty Dovetonsils.
nostalgia
Everyone loves the Hope. We fondly remember the days of old when the Rat Pack and other big time Hollywood types would participate. It made great television back in the day. Not so much anymore.
Those days are gone. They are not coming back. The format stinks. It’s time for this tournament to die quickly. Crosby’s been dead for awhile too, so the Pro-Am doohickey at Pebble should die as well.
PS: I can’t believe Firefox spellchecker had ‘doohickey’.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
Is there anything that can be done to reignite the format? Why did it die?
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
RedT's:
Those are very good quesitions. Unlike Dianemarie, I’m not old enough to remember the “Rat Pack”….OK, that’s a lie. Maybe the pros interpret the format as working overtime for the same pay… Maybe the advertising revenue for that first round on Wednesday can’t pay for the broadcast. Then there’s the “celebrities”….. As Dianemarie said, Old Hollywood is gone. The New Hollywood is almost unknown to me, and maybe to Dianmarie as well. I’m trying to be polite to say Bill Murray and his antics are trite. Since I’m not at the golf course every day anymore, I don’t know if the game is being embraced by young people. Sure there are the high school and college golf tems, but somebody is buying those skateboards that made Tony Hawk a millionaire. As I see it, young people thought Tiger Woods was cool, Phil Mickelson….not so much… It might help the Hope if the tours "stars’ didn’t all go to Abu Dhabi….
like Ping said – we don’t have very many universally beloved celebrities anymore – and even fewer who play golf. Places like Riviera and LA Country Club were just packed with huge stars who had nationwide appeal. That just isn’t so anymore. Celebrities could count on a least a tiny bit of decorum from the media. They didn’t have to deal with bottom feeders like the Papparazzi at every turn. The galleries enjoyed being close to the stars, and the stars interacted with them. Today we get a couple of “for TV” moments with Ray Romano and Kevin….whatever his last name is. Kevin Costner seems to think he’s Roy McIvoy trying to win the US Open, he’s so serious. Bill Murray isn’t a clown anymore, but people want him to act the way he did 25 years ago, so he tries, but it’s old material. Ron Silver passed away, and he was about as close to the classy star as these tournaments used to get. He smiled and chatted and played his best.
Now they bring in boy band “stars” who want to wear cargo pants and run around like mental patients. It’s a different world.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
They should hire Michael
Jordan to coach these golfing celebrities.
leaving on a jet plane
Once upon a time there were few private jet airplanes with sufficient range and capacity that would give players the capability of playing events on multiple tours during the same year. Back in those days golf had an off season, so players would “pick” a tour and stay with it for the year, playing as many events as they could. Playing a couple of pro-ams each year with the “stars” was reasonable. Now golfers at the top of the money list are at least as pampered as so-called celebrities and have the wherewithal to play where they want. They obviously don’t want to play with D-Listers.
