Free Shipnuck: Golf Fans Demand Corey Pavin Be Accountable
Alan Shipnuck is a writer for Sports Illustrated and golf.com. On Tour and in media rooms, he's known as Shipwreck primarily because it is an easy play on his name. He nominated Phil Mickelson as SI's Sportsman of the Year for '09. He answers fan emails each week. Christina Kim chose Alan to be her co-author on her forthcoming book, out in April. The guy is a good writer and a hell of an American.
Well, apparently Corey Pavin, the 2010 Ryder Cup Captain, and his wife are not fans of Alan.
Alan had just begun to use Twitter a few weeks ago. He sends out regular, insightful, and pleasant updates on golf. But for whatever reason, Alan has been blocked by Corey Pavin on Twitter. Shipwreck noticed and sent out a message about it.
Just discovered I'm being blocked by Corey Pavin, aka @RC_CAPTAIN_2010. That clinches it, I'm rooting for Europe.
That message prompted a response from Pavin's wife ,Lisa, who is also on Twitter.
Europeans....you just found yourself a new fan!!! Look at what I found....no wonder the Tour calls him Shipwreck.
Then, she blocked Shipnuck, too! What a jerk!
Shipnuck tried to respond in kind:
Now I'm being blocked by our Ryder Cup captain's wife @captainess2010 . Those Pavins are gangsta!
It has gotten so bad that Shipnuck had to address it in his weekly email column.
Well, you know what, I'm going to block Corey Pavin and his wife. They don't need to see the information that I pass along, and I want no part of a Ryder Cup captain that blocks a golf writer. In fact, I highly encourage all of you with Twitter accounts to block Corey Pavin and his wife out of your life.
While former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger probably has no use for a computer at all, I'm pretty confident that he would not block perfectly harmless golf writers from seeing his Twitter feed.
Join our cause! Free Shipnuck or block Pavin (and his wife)! But there is no freakin' way that I will go as far as to root fo Europe at Celtic Manor. Captain Monty is still way bigger of a douche than a technologically retarded American captain and his wife.

Come On
I read this too, but Shipnuck must have said SOMETHING to upset Corey & his wife. Let’s hear both sides of the story. I sent a message of welcome to Corey on Twitter and received a gracious reply. What’s the origin of “douchebag” as an insult, pls. I know douche is French for shower, but that explains nothing.
I block people on Twitter who follow me for no apparent reason. They don’t even have to insult me first!
I think Shipnuck is talented
but anyone who reads his stuff on the regular has to admit he can be a (rhymes with Nick).
Hey, I'm a hick
so I didn’t catch your drift and am therefore offended.
Just kidding. Not offended.
Wait....
…“pleasant articles”…in Sports Illustrated ??? Did they start putting bikini models on every page ? I quit reading SI a long time ago when they turned into a tabloid rag and got away from being the sports magazine I read growing up.
No way this is as simple and innocent as Shipnuck is making hmself out to be. Pavin’s a bulldog competitor – but he’s not a jerk.

First,
EM,,,who Dat baby….now sleep well tonight..Dear Wendy…please don’t be offended…It is only “man speak” and should have been tempered before being used…And I agree, what the hell is twitter? I hear the phrase all the time and just thought it meant twits, and I know a bunch of those…Please TX…don’t go into your Improv stand up routine….STUB
How bout I stop my improv
once your comments improve? Deal?
Your Saints looked
Super Bowl bound, EM. That Reggie Bush spin move was fantastic.
Tigerhead.....How about that!!! I don't know about you, but
I didn’t see any “rust” on Dem Saints yesterday. More like a precision machine hitting on all cylinders. Hopefully they can keep it up. Who Dat!!
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!
Cowboys humiliated !
Vikes and Da Saints,…..awwwl-riiiiight ! Loved watchin’ Dallas get drilled, especially the last TD. Jones looked he just got embalmed standing on the sidelines ,LMAO.
you're still away,...choke on it !
The best team won.
Congrats to da Saints. My Cards looked too banged up in this one, but defensively it really hasn’t been there all season. Strong D win championships. Gotta pull for Da Saints now. Anybody but the freakin Cow-girls !

no 3rd round thread...so...
…DID YOU SEE THAT BUNKER SHOT ?? Ryan Palmer at 16 – incredible
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
One of the best golf shots I've seen...
…in a long time. Required an incredible level of creativity.

I believe it’s sort of a 140 maximum character e-mail. Often used as a stream of conscious communication. I can’t buy into any communication modality with the root word “twit”….. As opposed to e-mail, there may be a per use charge. As I recall it was predicted that the Saints would lose…. em66: you said “one more step”…I think it’s two. But maybe you’re right, they’ll never get past the Colts.
Ryan Palmer?
Is he Arnold’s son??? FYI: I can’t stay awake long enough to finish the broadcast… I haven’t looked at the leaderboard yet this morning…. My guess is Ryan Palmer is no longer leading.
You’re confusing him with Palmer’s grandson Sam Saunders.
Saunders dropped out of Clemson to turn pro and missed the cut in Q-School.

amended 30 seconds later:
My guess is Ryan Palmer is not leading…alone….
Let's talk about the Ryder Cup shall we? NOT!
My guess this is little more than a manufactured event to get the Ryder Cup "into the conversation. Don’t peak too soon guys. You can be sure the press will do its level best to denigrate Montgomerie whenever possible. And Monte will give them plenty to chew on.
What does all this
have to do with Monte….I thought it was a comment on “Shipwreck” and the Pavins’…Has anyone actually read the article in SI so that we know what the heck we should get upset about…give us some clues, so TXQ has something to chew on besides his “beef jerk e”…Is it true that there is a Twitter charge?…Man, I have enough to do with just e-mails…well, cell phones too…this tech stuff is driving me crazy….well, not driving, just a short putt…HA HA HA TX, beat ya to it….STUB
Free Shipnick ?
WTF !
C’mon Ryan, this is a little juvinile. YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS !!!!
If this is humor, then I’ve missed the punch line. Wouldn’t be the first time.
Blocked from Twitter ? ? ? This now qualifies as newsworthy ? Gimme a break.

Not everything here is news Pro...
Most is “For Entertainment Purposes Only” These days, that’s a very good thing!
Reminds me of a great Simpsons
headline: Slow News Day Grips Springfield
Since when do we like
golf writers? Especially over Corey Pavin?
I block twitterers for various reasons. Like Wendy, sometimes because they try to follow me for no apparent reason. Or, often, because of advertising non-golf stuff or sending 40 back-to-back identical golf ads.
I’ve been as high as 1,000 followers, have cut down to 350 and now I am at about 600. Following, or being followed, is a privilege, not a right.
I'll keep an eye out for you...at www.oneeyedgolfer.blogspot.com

Free Twitter!
No charge STUB!
I follow golfers/golf bloggers/writers & a few odds & sods (e.g. Andy Roddick) on Twitter – you can get some good insights/comments from them. I do think it is quite entertaining, even interesting when the US Ryder Cup Captain/“Captainess” (!) block a sports writer so publicly.
When I get a message announcing someone is now following me, I quickly check their bio – it’s pretty obvious when it is a “spam” nut rather than a golf nut, so I block them.
I only ever post comments/questions in response to something I find of interest – much as I do here.
But for whatever reason....hmm.
That line looks like it needs some “reporting” done to find out the reason. Could it be that this article is somewhat biased towards a friend, or co-writer. I have no knowledge of the situation, but it’s kind of curious. Maybe some leg work, or actual digging might uncover the cause for Pavin’s actions. Then a true story could be written. As for now i can’t support a one sided “cause”. Just sayin’

So Red,
are you saying it was ok to call Corey a jerk, but not Lisa???…kind of smacks of women VS men kind of thing…LOL…STUB
If you are under the impression that this website is only golf news, you are sorely mistaken. I do interviews, reporting, etc, but I also find one-off stories, have humorous posts, and talk about stuff that you may not consider relevant. The best part about doing a blog is that I run it, so I get to determine what gets on the front page.

with all due respect...
it’s occasionally hard to find your humor, especially when it is all mixed in with newsworthy and sometimes “exclusive” coverage – humor is definitely in the eye of the beholder – and I think we all know that in writing you can’t always “see” the sarcasm or joke (still wishing there was a sarcasm font!). I’ll be honest – funny or not, I didn’t find the humor in bad mouthing the Pavin’s. My sense of humor is fine – I guess I just appreciate a different delivery of funny.
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
It’s kind of funny that you brought up that it’s hard to see/sense sarcasm or humor sometimes. I admit that my humor is often very subtle. Even when I do a post that I feel is hyperbolic and ludicrous, it may not seem that way. Anyhow, there was a funny article this week talking about how someone invented the punctuation mark for sarcasm, which I thought was hilarious. It looks like this:

Sarcasm, satire, comedy etc.
Great writers never needed emoticons, inventive punctuation or prompts like LOL to express themselves clearly. George Carlin or Dan Jenkins didn’t need smiley faces or LOL’s to write comedy. It may very well be that in this age of texting communication, short cuts are replacing language.
George Carlin wasn’t a writer – and Dan Jenkins isn’t funny. When your intention is to write humor, there is an understanding between the writer and the reader. With these modern written communications, the intent isn’t always clear, or the author as talented.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Carlin was most certainly a writer. Jenkins was the only golf writer I could think of who tries to be funny.
These "modern written communications use words, the English language….But I think you’ve spotted the problem….talent…

Dan Jenkins tried to be funny ?...
Maybe he should have tried a smiley face. :-)
Feinstein likes to think he’s funny…he’s not…but he thinks he is. Try PG Wodehouse.
Carlin’s books were more biographical than humor. His comedy isn’t nearly as funny when read as when hearing or watching it performed.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
It makes a difference...
on the who, where, how. Carlin is a comedian, so yes, I would expect him to be funny. I would also suspect that if he wanted to get serious about a topic, he’d probably say, “I need to get serious for a minute” because it just makes sense to think that whatever he’s going to say is going to have humor or sarcasm tied to it.
When I read David Feherty, I expect him to be funny/sarcastic, too – (I don’t know Dan Jenkins enough to know if he’s funny). In that same way, I don’t expect for Feherty to be giving us “news”.
In Waggleroom, there is a wide mix of information – most of it news-based/information sharing…it may end up as someone’s opinion, but it usually has a source of information provided to base that opinion on. I wouldn’t say Humor is the basis of most of the posts started here, although some of the responses can be hilarious.
I am all for Ryan writing and editing to his heart’s content – but then I have to keep remembering – this is a blog, not a news source – and I forget that a lot because there is often so much good news here – but when you mix in opinion, satire, humor, etc the actual news can get lost or the credibility of the actual news information can be questioned…especially when it’s all filtered through one main page – I would certainly appreciate a news section, a humor section, and a blog/opinion section, but that’s not how this works.
If it weren’t for emoticons, smileys, and LOL’s, I’d think Court Golf was a real jerk.
(Just Kidding!! LOL – a little Monday morning humor!) ;-)
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
I think you raise a good point – having one big page may make it tougher to spot the comedy/hyperbole. And since I write in a lot of different styles, I can see how it can get confusing. I’ll try to make it more clear in the tagging, etc.

One off stories and humorous posts ?
Got it ! This must be the humorous post then. My bad,! ! ! …..like I said," I missed the punch line,…..again". I know CP via mutual “golf wars” and he’s a terrific fella, a real gentleman. But a jerk,???……sorry,I’m still looking for the humour. Perhaps one needs to be a Twitter-head to catch it. That’d leave me out. As for Shipwreck,…..I’ve heard about him, nothing worth repeating though. Haven’t read him either FWIW. Mooooovin on.

I’m going to try to get a hold of Shipnuck for the podcast this week. I gotta find out what he thinks ticked off Pavin and his wife in the first place.

dollars to doughnuts, Shipnuck made some sort of crack when Pavin got the Ryder Cup captaincy.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I’m willing to wager that, but then Corey Pavin has extremely thin skin.

No one else seems to
know either…..My suggestion fair Wendy, block the sucker and lets move on….STUB
Ryan has a responsibility
nay, a DUTY, to his faithful readership to get to the bottom of this.
I loved Shipnuck’s “That clinches it, I’m rooting for Europe” – no emoticons needed.
I can’t believe that Lisa took that seriously.
It can't be
the joke Shipnuck made that Cory wants Skip Kendall to come back on tour as he needs someone to look up to him, can it?
Obviously as the shortest person on these posts, I look up to you all. No problem.
