Around SBN: Hugh Douglas Admits To Stealing From Jaguars

Sony Open in Hawaii, Round 1 - Game Thread

The first full field event of 2010 is underway at Waialae.  Zach Johnson is defending champion among a field featuring some 25 rookies, including the supposed next savior of golf.  That savior, Rickie Fowler, is +4 through 11 holes in his opening round.  Scoring, though, has been pretty generous overall.

Jinx

He just made double bogey on 15. But he’s 2-under par overall, and anything in the red today is solid.

Quinney

Former U.S. Amateur champ Jeff Quinney combined to make over $3.5 million in 2007 and 2008, then was all over the map last year. He opened this season with a 4-under 66. I always get a bit a queasy whenever I see him or Matt Kuchar swing because their club positions are so flat at the top of the backswing, but as long as they repeat that position, I guess it doesn’t really matter.

I keep wondering how Kuchar ended up with that swing plane. He used to be really upright – now he looks like he’s swinging under a door frame.

Puma's Main Man

was 6 over after seven holes, so maybe he can bring it back. Last time I looked Jesper was stinking up the place. And TGC’s lead story John “Second Chance” Daly was a couple over after 7…. I’m more curious than interested these days… Court: They commented on Kuchar’s new swing last week… Maybe he wants to look more Hoganesque. Whatever, it seems to be working for him..

First rounds for most of these guys this year. They’ll get the rust off. Which direction is the wind blowing ?

Yeah – I heard them trying to make the comparison – but Kuchar is even flatter than Hogan. He looks more like some of the pictures you see of the 19th century St Andrews players.

I like Kuchar

did you notice that Glover was also +5 like Jesper? Is he still mad at himself for last w/e?

What does “swinging under a door frame” mean, pls?

by WendyUK on Jan 15, 2010 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

outdoors – no ceiling – swing away
indoors – 8’ ceilings (usually) – gotta watch out or you’ll dent the ceiling or break a light
doorframes are 6 1/2’ to 7’ tall – even less room to make a swing

Oh yeah.....I jumped on

that "Foul"er band wagon, and +6 gets him benched tomorrow, and he’s done, unless the top 110 make the cut….lol

I almost did too…but I went with Cabrera because I figured I might not use him 10 times…I still can’t believe a 2 time major winner is in the C group. Cabrera saved me. Although DLIII is my back up!

Zach is my back up – DANG! But I’m not giving up on Els… When Sabbatini started out with a double yesterday I think I yelled at my computer screen – it took a lot for me to take him because I just don’t like him. A good bounce back -2. So far all of my squad is under par – barely. :)

are you guys bashing the baby….my gawd, he has to get his bottle and be burped and if you keep being negative, who will do it???…sorry, i have my own group to worry over the finish line…and oh yea, I think I got the winner again..lol…STUB

66's

“Foul” er…. Looks like TXQ ? has raised the comedy bar a notch. Few golfers live up to hype, Michelle Wie immediately comes to mind. Rickie must hear the tacit message that he’s THE guy with the potential to bring excitement back to the Tour. Remember he was in that Frys.com playoff but hooked into the grunge at a critical moment. As I said some where else, I’m more curious than interested…

another notch in Rich Lerner's resume...

…Anybody see his interview with Ernie Els ? Mostly inocuous questions…but how about that finish ? “Thanks, big man.” Seriously ? “BIG MAN” ?? Did he think he was talking to some 10 year old on the driving range ? Lerner didn’t even offer Els an ice cream cone.

Lerner has now added “dork” to his resume.

ONE GUY LEFT ?

Did I miss something last night ? Was there a weather delay ? Or is the pace of play already running behind schedule after one day of the first full field event ?

Play was halted due to darkness, but by rule, players are allowed to finish the hole they are on if darkness is called.

Get this – ONE GUY decided not to finish…not one group…one guy. Tom Gillis decided not to putt out at 18, but the other two in his group (Kris Blanks and Yokoo Kaname) did – which means Gillis has to get up extra early to finish the 18th before getting ready for his 9:00 tee time today. Not a terrible thing – but he must have some kind of tough putt to want to wait until the next day.

by courtgolf on Jan 15, 2010 10:03 AM EST reply actions

my bad – he has to putt out on #9 before they can move the hole location for the second round, so he has to be there before 7:10 when the first group tees off.

What a selfish guy........

he held up posting the fantasy numbers…..actually it’s ok, as I got to stay tied for 4th one more day. I WILL be dropping like a rock today. I had Allenby sitting out and Fowler really hurt……ouch

Did that mean

that his playing partners also had to go with him to observe the putt? If so, bet they’ll have his card marked for the future.

John Daly, The King of Second Chances

Right at the out set, I have not heard any post round interview stuff from Daly. I hoping he doesn’t use the standard “early in the season, getting the rust off my game” excuse for his round. If John Daly were serious about being a member of the PGA Tour, he should have been working his butt off prior to the Sony. While other tour players in the top 70 or so can afford to use the Sony as a season tune up, Daly can not. For the sake of the tournament I’d like to see him make the cut and give a good accounting of himself. If not, it just more of the same we’ve seen for several years.

Wendys'

question got me thinking guys…I can’t remember a single instance where one guy goes back out early….Now, wouldn’t the official scorer and yes the player keeping his card also have to go?…checked the book on rules of golf, and nothing even close, so it has to be a tour ruling…STUB

by thinker on Jan 15, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

there would have to be an official on hand to make the score official. kind of doubt they would force a player to get up early – just check scores up to the point of the last shot played.

by courtgolf on Jan 15, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

But doesn't

there have to be ANOTHER player keeping his card – the official can’t do that. Oh wait a minute – there are occasions when a player is solo – and the official can verify score. Think I’ve answered my own question.

Wendy,

Tell Easing, that you can’t break the light if ya swing flat….a tennis forehand is flat Easing…Red, don’t encourage Court, we’re trying to get him help, but until it arrives we’re supposed to keep him down with his feet elevated….STUB

by thinker on Jan 15, 2010 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Thanks stub...

never made the tennis connection before…I must have been swinging the club like a serve, lol

by Easingwold on Jan 16, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

A flat forehand against

a decent volleyer at net loses the point. Gotta have that topspin.

by TXQ on Jan 16, 2010 4:19 PM EST reply actions

I've never forgiven

the golf pro who told me that my (old, obviously) swing looked like a hockey player. He could have said “a very good hockey player”. I was also a mean little lacrosse player, so I should have been grateful he didn’t make that comparison. Jim Furyk anybody?
