Mike Whan Doesn't Want A Special Parking Space

Newly minted LPGA Commish Mike Whan is making the rounds - and hopefully I'll get to talking with him soon.  He spoke with Farrell Evans of golf.com about his first few weeks on the job.  Though Whan tipped that there may be some additions to the 2010 schedule yet to be announced, this was by far the most interesting part:

I hurt my back pulling my reserved space sign out of a cement base in the parking lot at the LPGA Tour headquarters in Daytona Beach. I don't want a special space. This isn't the Mike Whan Tour. It's about the players, fans and corporate partners. We're all in the same foxhole.

Maybe Whan was responding to a request for a new handicap space in the LPGA Tour parking lot, or maybe the guy is talking the talk.  Either way, what are you thinking, Mike?

At my day job, we have a raffle each year for an up front parking space and people go Lady Gaga for it.  They buy tons of raffle tickets so they only have to walk 20 feet to the building.  And I'm sure we have way more employees than the LPGA does.  Take the space, man!

I mean, Tim Finchem gets a special space at the Tour events he attends.  And as this picture from the Tour Championship shows, he often leaves it empty!

If you're going to bring swagger to the LPGA Tour, Mike, we're going to need you to act like you own that parking space.

Parking

Yep, it’s a slow news day here at waggleroom.com. Either that or Ryan broke out his old bong and is posting anything that comes to mind. Which by the way isn’t necessarily a bad thing….Here are a couple of research suggestions: Tim Finchem, boxers or briefs, Whan, just what kind of name is that? Why did Jim Colbert finally quit on the hair piece, Was that Stewart Cink at the open auditon for a new Mr. Clean?

No question TXQ, you're workin' it....

But if you don’t finish your comment with LOL, very few will recognize the humor…It’s sort of like a laugh track…

by pingforever on Jan 14, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Huh. Never knew that.

I always figured the authors were laughing at their own work. Anyway, I don’t like to hit the reader over the head. I’d rather give them some credit for grasping the fairly obvious. But thanks for the tip. (lol) (Just kidding, but you knew that.)

TXQ.....you're ok without the LOL.....we get it.

It’s only Ping that needs to let us know when he’s trying to be funny……………………………………………………………………………………………..lol

LOLITA!!!

Laughed Out Loud in Total Amusement (my own creation). I like the way all (read: most) of you folks can rib each other without getting gratuitous or obnoxious.

Ad Ryan never flies off the handle no matter what is thrown at him. Cool heads prevail on this post.

And thanks again, Ping, for your tip. Btw, should you ever go into the bong biz, the marketing would sell itself.

Ok – the guy hurt himself…trying to yank a parking sign that was CEMENTED in the ground ? I don’t mind that he doesn’t want special parking at HQ, the parking lot isn’t that big to begin with – but RB really hit the nail on the head – the Tour (not us) needs him to show some strong leadership…not to mention a little common sense. If you don’t want the parking space, DELEGATE ! Let the guy with the tools take down the sign.

oh – the picture shows that he occassionally leaves his parking spot unused – not “often”. He also has a driver who might be out doing something while Finchem is inside.

I was just ribbing both Whan and Finchem – more Finchem, though.

And Finchem can’t have a driver. I mean, if Tiger doesn’t, how can Tim? Right?

Anyhow, I’m pretty impressed with Mike Whan so far. He’s handling this the right way.

Actually, Tiger does have a driver...

From what I understand, Steve does all the driving when they’re out on tour.

After Thanksgiving, I think we all know why. ;-)

Not that day at the Tour Championship. Tiger left in the driver seat in that Buick SUV!

BMW – he was done with the Buicks earlier in the year. 30 VERY sweet BMW’s in the parking lot this year. I think Finchem was in a Lincoln.

Maybe it's not all the time then

I just know I’ve seen plenty of video where Tiger arrived at tournaments with Steve driving. Not that we have to worry about that for a while…

When life is good and all is well in your world you can flash your arrogance. When life is tough you need to show everyone, regardless of station, is working together.

CG, always the literalist, thinks he was serious about hurting his back.

When I moved here in 1987, the SF Giants and the Reds were in a tight race for the NL West in mid-September. At the time, Roger Craig, a long-time pitching coach who taught all his guys the split-finger fastball, was the manager of the Giants. I’ve forgotten whether the four game series was played there or here, but I do remember that Giant pitchers were serving up a steady diet of “splitters.” One of the local news sportscasters whined afterward that “if the Giant pitchers had been real men they would have thrown fastballs!” That was my introduction to Cincinnati fans. I don’t particularly care for any of the local teams.

lol – I never heard that comment – pretty funny. Guess he didn’t read the third word – Split Finger Fastball. What a devastating pitch – and Craig was a genius with it. Cincy’s been a tough place since the days of the Big Red Machine.

I really thought they would start getting better players there once they got rid of the old stadium and that artificial turf.

Like most bad teams in whatever sport, ownership is the problem.

Some of us really have to work on a few concepts here:

1. Understanding that I like to use hyperbole, but don’t really mean it literally
2. That a blog can actually doesn’t have to talk about boring game stories
