eBay Would've Been A Better Way to Bid Out the '18 Ryder Cup
Six nations are bidding with the European Tour to host the 2018 Ryder Cup matches. France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden could all be the next host - all but one would be doing so for the first time. How will that be determined? Of course, by how much money they bid to show how badly they really want to host the Ryder Cup.
The European Tour held a symposium today with representatives from these bidding nations to basically outline how much money each should expect to bid. And, oh yeah, stuff about the course, environment, etc. But it was about the money. After all, before they went bankrupt, Dubai thought they had a chance to land the '18 Ryder Cup.
In the end, it may have been a big time saver to just put the Ryder Cup up for auction on eBay. It's so useful for selling stuff and you can put all the information there.
Here's how I would imagine that eBay posting would look (click to view full size):

LMAO !
Brilliant ! :-)
Holland and Sweden ? What’s the weather like that time of year ? Would the wives/girlfriends be walking into the opening ceremonies in those wooden shoes if it’s in Holland ?

Since the European Tour and the PGA Tour are battling for the hearts and minds of the emerging Asian market, having it in Korea or China would be a marketing masterstroke.
I wonder if they’ve thought of that yet.
Oh, and let me add that they would need to find a way to include Asian golfers. Perhaps the Americas (both continents) versus Europe and Asia?
And who would get the Aussies?

Has to be
geographical Europe – otherwise we wouldn’t be able to watch it prime time.
Blood would be spilt!
Love to see the "current " list of US players – Tom Watson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes!!!
definitely
The Ryder Cup isn’t about Asia – it’s Europe and the US. Even Dubai was a bad idea…except for the weather.

Bad ideas often get implemented to gain market share.

The world doesn’t have to go to China – this has already gotten silly with all the fawning over “growing the game” and taking it to communist China. How have people forgotten the human rights protests against China ? How about all the protests to “free Tibet” ?
The Ryder Cup is US vs Europe – it should be played in the US or Europe. Asians have nothing to do with the Ryder Cup – and, as Wendy correctly noted – WHY would you want to have it in China and make everybody either watch it in replay or stay up all night to watch ?

“The world doesn’t have to go to China "
No, but a lot of our cash already does…they are the #1 exporting nation now and have only gotten started.

I do like the idea of Americas v Europe/Asia
but NOT for Ryder Cup.Can’t believe any Asian gain would make up for European revenue loss.
Such sacrilege OMP! I gather my provisions for the 3 days, accept no phone calls, or visitors and am GLUED to my TV screen thoughout (I am impervious to mockery re
provision of bedpans, sounds of people pretending to fall down the stairs, etc). If played in China or Korea my world would come tumbling down.
is it just my computer...
…or is the page loading really slow today ? Or is it all of our collective brilliance in all these posts that’s weighing it down ? :-)

You really should upgrade that ’386SX to something faster. ;-)

Seriously, this site is a hair slow today, but ’net traffic is tremendous today.
Something about a little disaster in the Caribbean Basin, I would presume.

Court,Wendy,OMP,
I agree that it is the USA VS EUROPE, but just for the sake of argument, have you forgotten why that wily weaselly ol Commish went to China?..Weaselly, loved your description Wendy, hope you don’t mind my using it…dipped ;his toe in the water to get control of something or other…and we haven’t see what yet and Court, yes, with China’s records in most things, why cater to them….grow the game my arse…I can’t help think of Gen. MacArthur’s comments to the news media after he was relieved of command…“mark my words, some day we will have to fight the Chinese”…and OMP your right, again it’s all about …MONEY….If American companies hadn’t exported all our mfg. to China and Asia in general, .I can’t help but think our unemployment would not be in double digits, never mind the finance issues…that’s a whole other issue…STUB
You all have good points, and it’s sort of fun to play Devil’s Advocate to an argument I really don’t support myself.
Ryder Cup aside, China is and will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say that American global dominance is waning and that Chinese dominance is rising, and rising very quickly. That’s because we have not only exported our manufacturing base to them, we have also borrowed ourselves blind to pay for Middle Eastern oil.
We did this to ourselves, and it no political party can be given ownership of the problem, because they both did it.
Meanwhile, our European friends have a wee little problem with the diaspora of Middle Eastern immigrants into their own country, so much so that their own culture have experienced a sea change beyond mere dilution. One only has to visit London, Lyon or Leipzig to the see that with their own eyes.
Back to the Ryder Cup, I would like it to be played in Great Britain or Ireland, without exception, and in America on traditional, classic courses, without exception. I prefer to honor and continue the great tradition on the competition, however, I fear that it shan’t be long until the Ryder Cup joins in with too many other things and chases the money to the Near East or the Far East.

lots of good thoughts, OMP – but they will cancel the Ryder Cup before playing it in China or the far east. It makes no sense whatsoever to play the matches in a place where neither team has a fan base. Half the fun of the Ryder and Presidents and Solheim and even the new “Royal Trophy” between Europe and Asia – is the gallery cheering.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
As Seve saved the Ryder Cup
And Ollie, Langer and the rest of the Europeans…it’s Europe…and we in Britain shouldn’t expect it to be played here all the time. Time it went to Germany, France and Italy before it goes back to Spain. It’s the right thing to do.
I think China holds a lot of $$$
I don’t blame either of the tours for trying to grow the game, get money, etc; surely that’s their job, even that weasel Finchem (if I knew how to post pictures it would prove beyond reasonable doubt the accuracy of my description). I just don’t want MY Ryder Cup going there.
Finchem is a weasel for sure..
Wendy, remember when there was talk of the Premier league talking about playing regular season game in the far east to cash in on the market there ? It’s wrong, but it could happen. We all love the Ryder Cup but it has become obscene the amount they charge the fan to watch . It’s a money making monster now. I love Sky TV but I’m still glad the Open is on the BBC…it keeps a sense of reality about it. If they take it to the far east, well, it isn’t the Ryder Cup anymore, is it ?
I do remember
the suggestion, but didn’t believe it would happen.
I also like mentioning that The Open has no commercial breaks whatsoever on BBC. For some reason this seems to annoy some people.
The Korean war had Chinese support, so in a way, we already have
China was always going to take the market, undercutting even countries like Sri Lanka. Who undercut us. We want cheap goods, well we got our wish.
And Viet Nam too
The Chinese were hip-deep in Viet Nam, against both the French and the Americans.

OMP,
that is why MacArthur made the remark in congress…He showed Truman that the Chinese were not only supplying equipment, but manpower also….The Secy. of State we had at that time quashed the whole thing, and the battle of the egos was over…Easing, your right…cheap goods…I used to wear Hagger slacks, than they started to have all the sewing done in Mexico….dumped 2-300 sewers here in the USA…just here in Texas where they are headquartered..you could see it in the workmanship…seams opening up, patterns just slightly off kilter…I stopped wearing them, even tho I got them free…STUB
Now I understand this LMAO....
Court, I’ll bet you smoke a joint before your log in. I remember getting stoned in the 70’s…I thought Mayonnaise was funny… I wondered how in the name of heaven, China got into this conversation…I re-read Ryan’s article…no mention there…then I saw it was OMP that brought it up hypthetically and from that point China was off an running. I’m thinking the moon would be a great venue. When they say the bunkers are like craters, they really mean it! The ball carries forever… Best of all we find out Tiger Woods really is from another planet. Ryan, VERY creative touch with Ebay!
Actually, although I definitely do not always see eye to eye with Court’s every opinion, his posts are generally pretty well thought out and lucidly written. Like One-Eye, Ryan and others here, I think that were we all members of the same golf club, we would likely be pretty good friends.
Discussions here have always had a pretty wide range and often with a pretty acerbic tone to them.

I cannot stress this enough!
We may argue a bunch here, but we all take it with a good nature, and that’s why I love most about doing this website. So don’t take anything here personally – we usually don’t mean it that way. :)

Why are you telling us that on this thread?
’Fess up – have you heard something from China or Korea that you should be sharing with us?
Signed " Concerned"
ping – the moon came up a while back…but the players wanted $1.6 billion apeice to play (to give to local charities, of course) plus dry cleaning expenses…that moon dust is a bitch to get cleaned off. The PGA and R&A just couldn’t get the guaranteed money from TV and NASA. ;-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Nahhh, we can’t even get to the moon.
Not us, not the Russians, nor any other nation in the world.
Even if we started now.

Ping, if you leave it out too long,
mayonnaise can get a little funny.
On a more serious note.
I’d like them to take the matches to Spain, if for no other reason than to honor Seve. He’s the father of modern European Golf. He brought a new level of excitement and had a boat load of charisma and never seen before skills. He defined the term “World Class”. Breathed new life into the Ryder Cup Matches too.
Excellent choice and reasons – not to mention it’s a LOT warmer on the Mediteranean and it’s never a bad thing to have the sun dresses in the gallery.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
then OBVIOUSLY they should find a golf course that’s not on the plain…
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
exactly – which is why you find a course that is NOT on the plain….since that’s where the rain mainly falls…in Spain :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
We should consult
BTuck of TravelGolf on this one.
In the meantime "All I want is a room somewhere … warm toes, etc. Oh wouldn’t it be luverly, luverly……….luverly
Mary Poppins
shown over Christmas holidays (as usual). Spent the whole time machine-gunning & lobbing hand grenades (wih sound effects) at Dick Van Dyck, but the blighter still kept singing.
NB I was outvoted on what to watch and possibly wasn’t the most graceful loser.
yep – it’s a Broadway revival right here on Waggle Room…as long as we don’t do Cats or Rent.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Cats is sort of the “You Light Up My Life” of musicals – it got old really fast….to me at least.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Cats shouldn't have gotten held over ...
but run over.
I’d love to see that. Great call, ping.

Ping,
that’s a damm good Idea…bring that up at the next board meeting…there Court goes again, always thinking about the ladies…STUB
The matches have already been in Spain....Valderrama 1997 and
Seve was the Euro captain. Europe won 14.5 to 13.5.
Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!

Right after I posted my comment, I remembered that….but it was too late to say," in Spain, again." And while I have you on the phone, you probably didn’t see my comment about the complimentary nature of being called “fungoid”. I explained what a unique and wonderful life form a fungus is, morels, shiitaki, portabellas, and the $350-500/lbs. Black Truffles. You can call me a fungoid any time! Bon Apetite!
This is the only reason that I doubt Spain will get it again – the only place to have held them other than GB&I.

Ryan, why not Spain again?
Was it “one and done”? Moving the Ryder Cup around Europe would be a good step toward a greater globalization of golf. Langer’s had a lot of impact on European golf, take it to Germany. There’s nothing sacrosanct about GB&I (sorry there Easingwold and Wendy)
Totally agree with you Ping
I felt a bit guilty about it always taking place in GB&I, so was pleased with Spain (although I would have put Seve in a straightjacket, or at least handcuffed him to his golf cart throughout). Maybe we could relook at the timing of the RC to give Sweden a chance, (no. of players from there on team) but otherwise I would be happy for Spain again or even Germany.
We all know that RC has become a “money making monster” (Easing) but I love team competitions/matchplay, so try to turn a blind eye to this aspect.
