Brad Faxon Joins NBC: Just What Johnny Miller Needs?

NBC Sports announced that Brad Faxon will be joining their announce team this season.  Fax is 48 and still looking to continue his PGA Tour career, but will join the booth on the Peacock's telecasts in 2010.  As Local Knowledge points out, Faxon has been trying to recover from ACL surgery in '07.

From the NBC Sports release:

"Brad Faxon possesses invaluable experience that I'm confident he will articulate to our viewers," said NBC Sports golf producer Tommy Roy. "As an active player and a member of the PGA Tour Policy Board, he has inside-the-ropes and inside-the-locker room knowledge of current players plus a broader understanding of the game."

I don't take Faxon as the kind of guy that will create the Faldo to Miller's Azinger, but maybe he will surprise us all.

Frankly, I'm waiting for the day that Rory Sabbatini gets in the booth.  That is going to be awesome.

Brad the announcer

It seems I heard Faxon do some coverage. It was after he had knee surgery. I can’t remember the tournament. As I recall he did OK. I wish him him well. Somebody over at TGC asked who he would be replacing. Anybody know? Or would he be an addition.

I think an addition. Maybe give Gary Koch a break when he wants to play Champions Tour events?

Another good announcer prospect

I caught Steve Flesch in the booth at some point last year, and was very impressed. He was funny and entertaining, but also very insightful, all along with a very casual and comfortable delivery.

Say WHAT ??

“Brad Faxon possesses invaluable experience that I’m confident he will articulate to our viewers”…ok…granted this is an NBC executive making this statement, and we’ve seen how good they are at decision making lately – but come on – they already have the sum knowledge of ALL golf sitting there…Johnny Miller !! Why would they need another person to say something Johnny already knows ? :-)

But seriously – it’s a temporary gig – I hope he does at least half as well as Freddie Couples did when he sat in.

(Letterman was ON last night – here’s his discussion of NBC’s late night decisions – HILARIOUS !)

Faxon must have passed his Tiger Sycophancy Test…now he will be given a trial to see if he can find new and innovative ways of praising Tiger, whether Tiger is leading the tournament or not, or whether he is even playing in the tournament or not.

I think Brad will do a pretty nice job. He’s very thoughtful, can give a good explanation of technique without sounding like a jerk, and has a load of experience on Tour.

it’s that “not sounding like a jerk” thing that might not work sitting next to Miller.

True, and Miller needs a foil.

Easy EM,

I just got Court figured out…anyone who thinks Letterman is HILARIOUS, is having problems…I THINK, and notice how I prefaced this, that He is a sarcastic jerk, who has never gotten over the fact he didn’t get the Tonight Show. See EM, thus his try to be funny with the saran joke LOL…all that said, I remember Faxon doing a telecast some time back, and he was pretty articulate and yea, knowledgeable…after all, he is on the tour…should know golf…Has this thought hit anyone…Maybe the network is casting about for a Miller replacement?…seems I remember an interview where he mentioned retirement…Faxon to me is in the same mold as Nabilo…Wouldn’t mind that if he didn’t use Franks disclaimer of “however”…STUB

wow – wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, Stub ? A lot of people think Letterman is funny – and if you watched the video – he was on last night. Sorry the Saran wrap / foil joke was too high brow for you. :-)

Why would NBC be looking for a Miller replacement…especially with a guy who is a long way from retirement ? Faxon is doing a guest spot while recovering – not looking for a new gig.

Ya never know,

Miller has said more than once, he’s getting a tad tired…might want to go off and be with the family…They can’t get Frank, so maybe Faxon, if he proves out…we all got the Saran/foil thing, but it was so bland, most of us just dismissed it…I’ve watched Letterman over the years, and most often he is taking bully pulpit cheap shots at folks who have no forum for retort…sort of like a bad whiskey, the taste it leaves in your mouth…STUB

I haven’t watched Letterman in years – but last night was really funny

wait – was the joke Ogilvy “bland” ? I’ll take that :-)

Showing my age

I stopped watching late night TV when Johnny Carson exited. NBC has taken the Tonight Show, as it’s being called, a “Legacy Show”, and thrown it under the bus. I know it sounds VERY old, but I’m glad Ed McMahon and Johnny didn’t live to see this debacle. I think Fax will surprise a lot of people…….my lame attempt to re-direct….

How about JM & CB?

Johnny Miller, and Charles Barkley would be fun to listen to. Johnny Putting Charles Down, and Charles making fun of Johnny. It would not be boring, and it might be fun. think Cosell…..Meredith…….Hicks would be the straight guy…..Just sayin’

More like Johnny putting Charles down…Charles putting Johnny through the backscreen :-)
