Anna Rawson Could Be Golf Digest's New Playing Editor

This week, I got the most recent issue of Golf Digest in the mail.  It's the Hot List issue where every new golf club gets rated as incredible because every new golf club is made in a CAD program and is perfect before a physical copy is ever made.

(The pictures are nice, though I am going to hear a lot from smaller equipment makers in Orlando about how the Hot List embodies how tough it is to breakthrough in the industry.)

Anyhow, the issue has its usual bevy of swing tips.  The names that are featured are Tom Watson, Hank Haney, Rick Smith, Jim Flick, Justin Leonard...and Anna Rawson.

Yup, Anna Rawson has a four page spread in this month's Golf Digest with three very simple tips to help your game.

351_medium

You have to be joking.  This article may as well have featured a 25 handicapper on the range that thinks he is chock full of talent.  "Three shots you need to score?"  I mean, why not throw in putting, too, and call it "The four basic golf shots with a hot chick demonstrating them?"

There is nothing to learn from this.  Anna has as many LPGA Tour wins as I do.  I defend and completely encourage her right to speak her mind, but this article just screams as an attempt to keep men interested in the magazine until the Viagra ad five pages later.  And if that's what Golf Digest is aiming for, maybe the Hot List can take on a new meaning.

I am NOT going to wear a pink babydoll golf dress just to fix my slice !!!!! Golf Digest has gone off the deep end on this one….but you have to give them high marks for not just printing the same old tired fixes – these clearly have better legs.

Freakin Funny...lol lol.....I guess I'll have to get a new subscription

to be able to “substantiate” as credible all the articles Ryan is reporting on. I had let my subscription go, as I got tired of Tiger looking at me while I sat on the pot……go figure.

Allow me to explain...

This is dramatic hyperbole to make a point. This LOL, LMAO thing is vastly over used. Besides, I think you’d agree there are few things more annoying or inane and someone that laughs at his own jokes. Salacious? You bet, but only to make tha point there’s been a lot of juvenile, frat-house vulgarity lately. Sure it’s fun stuff to laugh about over a beer with your buddies, but it’s not appropriate to put it in print. It was you that said waggleroom was “civil”. I’d just like to kick it up a notch. Most of the people commenting here are intelligent and knowledgeable about the game. For the most part people don’t attack one another on a personal level. That’s the way it should be. My guess is 95% of the comments made here are made by less than 10 people, you and I among them. If we set a standard of decency the blog will be the better for it…. OK I’ll get down off my soap box….

LMAO

LOL,, Sorry had to go there. No worries Ping. I actually feel that the conversation in here is very much like what we all have to discuss @ the 19th hole. The conversations in here are a LOT more CIVIL than many that I have taken part in at Sawgrass. Not that its a bad thing. convey the message that the comment or post is written in jest. Sometimes without that, it is hard to know what is or isn’t “serious”. And you know PG, there aren’t very many answers when it comes to golf….only opinions… Macer does have a sort of annoying lawyerish way sometimes. But I can’t recall him ever lashing back at 3irons for some of the vile, pejorative things he called him. 3irons might call that cowardly…I think of it more as self restraint…maybe even “turning the other cheek”…..

Last month’s issue of Golf Digest had a five page spread with Steve Stricker giving exactly the same advice as Rawson about the same shots. The problem must be the messenger, huh? Or, could the message have been aimed at the women who read the magazine?

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

by dianemarie on Jan 11, 2010 6:42 AM EST reply actions

Exactly...

After Golf for Women disappeared, if you had any remaining issues left, you received Golf Digest instead…GD did say they would attempt to put more “female friendly” golf articles in their publication. And of course there are many women who were already receiving GD so it’s not such a leap that, from a content standpoint, they were attempting to target female readers.

And to appease the male following, I think they probably chose the right gal.

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.

Let's not be so hard on Anna

GD posts monthly tips from teaching professionals who haven’t won anything either. Here’s a bulliten for ya,….just because Woods or Jack are great players, doesn’t make them great teachers. Butch Harmon played the tour briefly, but never won. That is not a pre-requisite to be a great teacher. Not saying Anna is a great anything yet, well,….she is a great looker LOL. Anyway, these tips and suggestions in the golf magazines haven’t changed in 50 years, and if these are all you go on, you most likely will not improve. Hands on instruction is far and away the most productive for many reasons. Most players need a hands on approach because we all learn differently and have different restrictions and body types. What works for Tiger most assuredly will not work for 95 % of players. Sure, I’m promoting what I do (teach) because I see the results. Helping a player get better or reach lofty goals is a challenge to student and instructor. You need somebody who can communicate with YOU, so ask around and you’ll get feedback. Now, as for Anna,…..I just enjoy the view,…hey, she’s a way easier on the eye than Flick or McLean. LMAO. Seriously, find a compatable PGA professional and spend some time. You’ll get waaaay better results than any of these generalizations you read in golf mags………………………Z.

Teaching school ??? No thanks bro,….those are a ton of work to put together. However,….golf schools are very good places to learn and even review. We sure have a lot of them here in Az. Best all around is the John Jacobs school. I’ve never heard a patron bitch or complain about them. Old school theory, but recreational golf hasn’t really changed much in 50 yrs. Same basic principles apply. Now, if you have Pro aspirations, thats different. Old man Flick is awfully good. I can call him that as long as I’m smiling,…he says so. Do yourselves a favor and flush anything regarding" stack and tilt "unless it refers to a womans anatomy. LOL Same for the 1 plane or 2 plane hype. Don’t reinvent th wheel, just find an experienced guy/gal that players can vouch for. Mike/Sandy LaBauve are two of the best over at Kierland in Scottsdale……………………………Z.

LOVE John Jacobs. How can you NOT have a great time around that guy ? I flew to West Palm last October and sat next to one of the guys who was on the CBS show (before the US Open) promoting the USGA’s “Prepare to Play” or whatever it was called. (if you remember the show – this was the young studly looking guy who was there with his very hot blond wife – he played defensive end at Penn State for Joe Pa – big guy). He went on and on about the lessons, but Jacobs was his favorite.

Have you been over to Pia Nilsson’s place for any of her Vision 54 training ?

Court,

John Jacobs the American playin’ the Champions Tour is not connected with the John Jacobs Golf School. The JJ golf school was formed by a English fellow of the same name who played in Europe mostly, and was inducted in the WGHOF in 2000. He was a former Ryder cup captain for Great Britain. He hooked up with American Shelby Futch and they started the golf schools here in AZ back in the mid 1970’s. JJ’s schools are considered the best in the world. You are correct about the younger, Champoins Tour player,… John Jacobs being a very funny fellow. Simple case of mistaken identity here.

Well I thought you were taliking about the good humored John Jacobs who hangs with McCord and plays the champions tour. The other Mr.Jacobs, who founded the golf schools, is 85 years old and has not been on this side of the ponds for many years due his health.. Shelby Futch runs the schools world wide as a result.

Excellent points all, 3.

Don’t you wish more people would put down Hogan’s “5 Principles” book ? As great as Hogan was, copying his swing is extremely difficult for 99% of the golfers in the world. Butch Harmon tells a story about a guy who came for a lesson with his dad in “The Pro”. The guy wanted Harmon to teach him to swing like Snead. Harmon headed to the practice green – the guy headed toward the driving range. Harmon dropped a ball into the cup and asked the guy if he could pick the ball out of the cup without bending his knees. The guy said, “no.” Harmon said, “Snead can. If you’re not as flexible as he is, you can’t swing like him.”

by courtgolf on Jan 11, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

I agree court

I love that book, I think the main thing about it when reading it is the love of the game Hogan had. He described the swing in a way people could understand. His weak grip to cure his hook is not for all but a student of the game can see this. A lot of the magazine tips do repeat themselves, of course. Most of my golfing friends ( 5 handicap to 28 ) find instruction boring. I personally like to know why and what works and love practising. Half of my mates just like to play, so when they go through a bad spell a tip is not always embraced. Hogan had it right…“a teacher is as good as the student’s ability to learn.”

Wendy, so

your still house bound…sorry about that…notice Easing didn’t say how warm it had gotten..Here in the USA of Texas, it was 53 yesterday, and almost 60 today…that after 2 weeks of below freezing…anyhooo…I see you would take lobsters from Jumpin, but ignored my offer of a cold bird and good wine…I have to tell you, the expression is from the theater…it ment dinner and drinks after the show…nothing to do with a “cold bird”..I don’t know if Court is done sewing or not..I think it was the red dress that got him…STUB

by thinker on Jan 12, 2010 2:21 PM EST reply actions

There was I

consulting my new cookbook “The Game Cook” (easy Easing!) for the best birds eaten cold so as not to disappoint you! I should have googled it as I did Grey Goose and even fig newton. My own reference to “Who is this cold bird” – “bird” = " girl/woman" in English slang.

This is the first time I have ever known snow in S. Hampshire to last for more than one day. Yes, still housebound, but it’s warm & cosy inside with an open fire, good company, good food & good wine.

I’ve attempted to stitch Court up enough for this week – do you think red is really his colour though?

If ever you’re over this way, the dinner and drinks are obviously on me.

Southsea - In my pulling days!!!!!

The 400 Club? Joanna’s was a dump – shoes stuck to the carpet ( eeuk) and they had plastic glasses – even in those days. It wasn’t Neros – but there was a gambling club where one could get free bites after 2 a.m. as I recall. Must ask one of my (more) frisky “sisters”! Didn’t you see my post re Tiger Tiger nightclub at Gunwharf Quays?

Resigned to no golf for time being – had good childhood hols. on IOW but didn’t even play crazy golf in those days. Am resolved to being totally “focused” when I get out there. Focused on what yet to be decided. Waiting for Heather @RealWomenGolf for guidance.

Ahh I may go back further..

I was based at HMS Dryad in ‘75 and Joanna’s was the first place we went to. I was usually based in Plymouth, but in ‘77 during the Silver Jubilee we had a great few weeks there. The atmosphere was great that week and we went in Joanna’s more than once. I seem to recall a tree or something like in the middle of the dance floor, where we could lean against when dancing got the better of us. No plastic cups then…we still had the good old pint glass, lol.
