Hire Phil Mickelson To Lead Your Monday 9AM Snoozefest Meeting

The PGA Tour has realized that some barons of industry get really nervous when playing a round of golf with some of the best players in the world.  That's why they're introducing a concept next season called the "sponsor value program."  What does that mean?  The NY Times' Larry Dorman explains:

Next season, as a way of giving choices to sponsors other than the pro-am, the tour will unveil a "sponsor value program" in which the sponsor can ask as many as five players to substitute a different activity like a clinic, a breakfast meeting or dinner rather than play in the pro-am.

Now, I don't think that the Tour players will be on the hook - not hooker - to pick up the bagels from Panera Bread.  But, I know that a decent number of players just despise getting up for these pro-ams, so it may well be a win-win for everyone involved.

Even better, players that finish in the top 30 on the money list (note: not the FedEx Cup standings) will be able to request to be put into one of these SVP events instead of that week's pro-am.

While I'm sure that some of Tiger's classic surly jokes would really liven up my Monday morning meeting, I would much prefer to just meet him at his office.

This has been done the last two years at The Tour Championship and has been well received. Companies have been able to invite non-golfers for the festivities (breakfast – lunch – dinner things), and the clinics go over very well since the participants get to hang out with more than one pro and actually get some help for their own games instead of just watching the pros hit shots they can’t hope to incorporate into their own games.

That is my favorite Mickelson commercial – especially the Asian guy at the end. Hilarious. I wonder how many takes it took for Mickelson not to crack up and stay that deadpan.

I do like the clinic idea. I think that’s equally as useful as the pro-am. But I don’t really wanna have breakfast or a meeting with anybody, much less a pro golfer that’ll just make it awkward.

Maybe if you started wearing pants to the table…. (LOL !!)

At the Tour Championship, you don’t actually sit down with the players – there is sort of a reception before where everybody mingles – then breakfast or lunch where the players are on a daeus for some Q&A. I think they had Phil, Vijay, Kenny Perry, and one other guy. It was hilarious – the guys were very entertaining and had no problem giving each other the needle.

Tiger Hatred

Seems like a whole lot of Tiger bashing the last few days. Can you post a clip or recap of exactly what he did? I saw the video of the girl, but I still missed the original.

Here’s the link to Tiger’s club flinging incident: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy7U_duBloM&feature=player_embedded

But, the GQ reference goes back to a 1997 article in which the reporter took jokes Woods thought he was telling off the record and used them in the piece. They were kind of insensitive to the sensitive.

I thought 1997 was the Fuzzy Zoeller joke incident. Tiger’s jokes were a few years more recent.

Pretty sure that article was in ’97.
