I Want John McEnroe Calling Golf Tournaments
We golf fans lament a lot about the lack of bench depth for the commentators calling our golf tournaments these days. NBC did a very nice job this weekend with the coverage of the Deutsche Bank Championship, but Johnny Miller still gets on my nerves. Despite that, they are eons better than CBS' efforts, which have devolved into some kind of attempt at "golf entertainment" that mightily fails on both parts of the phrase.
In the meanwhile, ESPN and the aformentioned Eye Network are doing a fantastic job with the US Open. And I'd like to credit John McEnroe as a big reason why. I don't know a ton about tennis, but I learn something everytime I listen to McEnroe. He explains situations, critiques players fairly and without using the first person, and is entertaining. Hell, the players love him so much that Novak Djokovic invited McEnroe down to center court after his match last night to hit a few balls on court.
Even better? McEnroe won a point! Take a look at the video.
Could you imagine Johnny Miller risking being humbled by Phil Mickelson in a flop shot contest? How about Peter Kostis trying to take on Tiger Woods in a putting contest? No?
The US Open is a unique tournament - incredible night matches and electric atmosphere - that only occurs once a year. Golf has its majesty (the Masters) and its trials (US Open), but seems to lack something like this during one of its biggest events of the year. It just seems stuffy on course and in the booth sometimes.
Moments like these prove that individual sports perceived to be boring and only for the wealthy can be engaging and fun. And why golf needs someone like McEnroe doing color commentary - though not Johnny Mac himself.

Lately, NBC has been. CBS has been awful of late. Very few shots. Promos all over the place. Little analysis.

Thanks, Court for mentioning that. My wife would certainly count among one of the many “casual” golf fans who don’t care for Miller.
I also think that her opinion carries some weight, too. She is an advertising executive, and she has a very good feel for what causes people to tune in or out of a given media event. It’s what she does for a living, after all.
And, oh by the way, you have seen some of her firm’s work that they do for the PGA Tour.

I can’t stand Johnny Miller, but the complete production of NBC Sports is far and away better than CBS these days.

Commentators
Johnny Mac & Peter Fleming are two of my favourite commentators at tennis tournaments. They are honest, witty and informative, often self-deprecating – yes, even Mac – occasionally critical, but not in the Miller style, although thankfully we don’t have Miller on UK coverage of golf tournaments. Who would be your equivalent of Mac & Fleming for golf commentary?

Peter Fleming calling tennis ? Where ? I would love to hear that.
Far more intelligent than Brad Gilbert, Mary Carillo, and that godawful Luke and Murphy Jensen team – the Michigan surfer boy wannabe’s.

Golf/tennis commentators
Sorry CG – you’re out of luck – unless you can get e.g. BBC tennis coverage. Peter Fleming is a great favourite with us. He & Mac only commentate together at Wimbledon I think, where they are as great together as they were at tennis doubles – & then Mac has to go off and commentate for the US channel whereas Peter stays with us. We do get other guest commentators, Tracy Austin and Boris Becker, for example, who are pretty good, but Peter is a one-off for sure.

Peter Fleming!
Co-incidence or what?! Watching US Open tennis whilst following golf on-line (6 hr. difference so no live coverage until late this pm), reading blogs whilst waiting for PGA leaderboard to up-date …………Fleming just interviewed Del Potro.
