You Gotta Be Freakin' Kidding Me, Norman. Adam Scott?!

The Presidents Cup captains, Greg Norman and Fred Couples, announced their Captain's Picks for the competition set for four weeks from now at Harding Park in San Francisco. (Really, it's South San Francisco. And the place is literally right next to Olympic Club.)
Fred Couples chose the two guys he basically said he would pick a few weeks ago - US Open Champion Lucas Glover and Ryder Cup standout from last year Hunter Mahan. Though I am a tad bit disappointed that he didn't go with the gimmick selection of Tom Watson, I can completely understand his decision making.
In that same press conference, Greg Norman basically said he had the whole universe of non-American or European golfers on his watch list. That led some to speculate that Norman would select Michael Sim, recipient of the Battlefield Promotion a few weeks ago. After all, Sim is Australian and ranked very high in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Other speculation hinted that Norman may go with Ryo Ishikawa. Given the very sizable Asian population in the San Francisco Bay area, Norman may think that Ishikawa can draw some support from the home crowd. Additionally, Ishikawa has had a very good season on the Japan Pro Golf Tour.
Ishikawa was picked by Norman. The Shark's other pick? Adam-freakin'-Scott.
The guy who can't break 80. The guy who finished DFL in Akron in a no-cut, limited field event. Sure, he's 16th in the ranking system employed to make the automatic selections to the squad, but I think I have a better shot of making the Green Bay Packers as their starting middle linebacker this year than Scott does of doing any kind of damage at Harding Park.
Maybe Norman picked Scott in the same vain as Ishikawa. Perhaps Norman hopes Scott will have the same impact on the San Francisco females as Jack Parkman did in Major League 2. (At least while he was in Cleveland.)
In the PGA Tour press release on the picks, Ishikawa got 3.5 paragraphs of praise for his play this year. Scott got 1.5, and even that was a struggle.
Scott’s last victory was the 2008 EDS Byron Nelson Championship, and he has posted two top-25 finishes on the PGA TOUR this season, including a T2 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He was T4 at the Barclays Scottish Open in July on the European Tour.
Wow. Ouch.
Go Internationals...
Here are some of the reactions from my blogging brethren.
- Shane Bacon uses Scott's (and somewhat Ryo's) selection as an explanation of why it's tough to take Pres Cup seriously.
- Nice Ballz takes its crack at why Adam Scott got on the Pres Cup team. I LOL'd at them.

This IS a bit of a head shaker. Aside from wanting a countryman on the team, I don’t see much of a reason to take Scott.

Presidents Cup = Complete Mockery
For Greg Norman’s sake, I hope Adam Scott pulls some great play out of his ass. This is the most ridiculous captain’s pick ever. They should seriously consider removing the privilege of captain’s picks, to prevent this from ever happening again.

Terrible choice!
Greg Norman made a travesty of the Presidents Cup. I don’t see the logic behind it at all… Maybe they should add a rule that gives the team the privilege to VETO the captain’s pick!!!

Adam Scott isn’t some 10 handicapper – he is still a highly ranked and respected player.
That doesn’t make it any less of an odd pick since he hasn’t had a very good year. If nothing else, it guarantees Norman that he won’t be asked to do this again.
