Pro Golfer Jerry Rice? Captain Paula Creamer? WTF?

Noted dancer and NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice is now entering the next stage of his career. He's now going to be a pro golfer. He will make his Nationwide Tour debut next April at the Stonebrae Classic in San Francisco. He was offered a sponsor's exemption in exchange for serving as tournament host.
It took Tiger Woods some 60 PGA Tour wins to earn a tournament of his own to host on the PGA Tour. For Rice, it took nothing but beating Stacy Keibler on a show that makes a mockery of ballroom dancing.
Meanwhile, Paula Creamer is just 23 years old and is now captaining a team. It's the American team for the Spirit International Golf Championship on Nov. 4-7 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas. Creamer will captain a squad of four American players, including Alexis Thompson, in a individual & team competition against 20 countries.
A few weeks later, Creamer will return to Texas for the LPGA Tour Championship near Houston.
Not that this picture of Rice screams "Captain!," but doesn't this picture of Paula Creamer suggest that she could be a great dancer?

You must have some wild dances up their in Maryland. Down here, we dance on our feet. :-)
I didn’t know the Spirit Cup teams had captains, much less a top ranked pro. That team has to be looking forward to a little time with Captain Creamer. (warp 7…make it so !)

geographically speaking
Stonebrae is across the Bay from San Francisco, not in. But, if Jerry Rice or Joe Montana put their name on anything in the Bay Area, it has instant credibility until proven otherwise. As compensation for use of his good name, Mr. Rice is getting an exemption. That seems reasonable to me.

I have no problem with that exemption at all, just had no clue that Jerry is a pro golfer now.

He’s not a pro golfer – you don’t have to be a professional to play in a professional tournament. You just have to abide by the rules of amateur status.
I’m with D – nice to see Rice using his name for things like this. When I lived out in San Francisco, Rice was second only to Montana in The City (or is it Ci-tay ?), but he was constantly whining that Montana was getting all the endorsement dollars. Occassionally, he let a racial slur out – but it was mostly whining that he wasn’t getting “his”.

court, stop teasing us. Give us
some info from back then..!!
I could forfeit my amateur status today and turn professional anytime I wished. The only thing that is keeping me from doing so is severe lack of talent. My index is 9.2, but, if I played the courses THEY play, from the tee boxes THEY do, I would be at least a few points higher.
I used to hear a saying that goes like this, “Fill your mouth with a bunch of marbles. Every time you shoot a 65 on your home course, spit one out. When finished, try the tour, because you’ve lost all your marbles..”.
You are not a pro if every other round is in the high 70’s or low 80’s…

Are you asking me for specific examples of Jerry Rice complaining that he wasn’t getting the endorsements like Montana ? Can’t give them to you – they were things he was saying that I heard on the radio and saw in the local fish wrapper. Didn’t make him any less a beloved Niner – just had people occassionally saying “quiet Jerry – of COURSE he gets the endorsements – he’s the QB !”
Here’s a crazy thing – I have a friend who plays a “professional” tour that allows players to use their handicaps. It’s crazy.
If you become a PGA professional, or a PGA TOUR professional, you lose your handicap. You might not be a scratch golfer – but you give up the right to have a USGA handicap.
