The Decider: What Has Been The Best Tournament of 2009?
It's a slow news day today. We have the Women's Canadian Open kicking off today, but that action is just getting moving. The PGA Tour doesn't begin in Boston until Friday, so there's no additional action to analyze. Rather than do that, let's just talk about what already happened this year.
The Decider this week is simple. Which tournament - on ANY tour - was the best this season?
For my money, I would think you could narrow it down to two events: the Open Championship and the Solheim Cup.
There's nothing quite like a nationalistic-based competition that is competitive to get the golf juices stirring. Sending a Chris Matthews "shiver up my leg," so to speak.
And we all know why the Open Championship was incredible - the emotional roller coaster that was hoping Tom Watson would make history.
So, tell me, what has been the best event of 2009?

I would go with Bay Hill, since it kept me on the edge of my seat during the final round AND had the finish I was hoping for.
The Masters got interesting when Phil & Tiger heated up, but cooled down after they came up short. KP’s tee shot on 16 was amazing, but it was quite a letdown when he gagged away the green jacket and lost to a guy who half-shanked a ball off a tree during the playoff.
The US Open had some drama and some potentially exciting story lines, but ended without much to cause you to jump out of your seat.
The Open Championship was by far the most exciting tournament of the year for me to watch, but I turned off the TV wanting to throw up after it was over.
The PGA Championship kept me on the edge of my seat, but again I turned off the TV disappointed.
This year’s big events have seemingly all been compelling, but have not had the endings that I was hoping for. Had Kenny Perry won the Masters, David Duval, Phil Mickelson or Ricky Barnes won the US Open, Watson won the British, and Tiger won the PGA then this would have been an awesome and truly memorable year in golf.

I’ll go with The Open followed by Solheim Cup too. Not only was The Open compelling, watching players like Westwood, Wood, etc, fall by the wayside, but it also had the ending I dreamt of having been a fan of Stewart Cink forever. I did feel sick for Tom Watson who is adored over here, but if Tom had won, I would have felt even sicker for Stewart. I love the team events, (and never agree with the putdown that they are merely “exhibition”), and was pleased that the Europeans put up a good fight on Sunday morning. If David Duval had won the US Open, I would have to put that in 2nd place.

I have to put the PGA first because we actually DID see something we’ve never seen before, and it wasn’t a scruffy finish – there were great shots by both players.
After that – I have to go with The Open, then the Solheim just for the excitement and excellent play.
I enjoyed watching Brian Gay at the St Jude’s in Memphis – that was a dominating performance.
Have to give the players good marks for their performances last week at The Barclays despite a not-so-hot golf course. Heath Slocum had 4 very big names breathing down his neck all afternoon and still buried that putt.
Bay Hill was fun – can’t believe there’s no love for The Valero Texas Open ! :-)
The Masters and US Opens had spurts of excitement, but none that really lasted, and Perry didn’t put up much of a fight in the extra holes.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
