What If The Tour Championship Was Played Like The ADT Championship?
Geoff Shackelford ran a great experiment over the weekend at East Lake to answer the question of how the Tour Championship would play out if they PGA Tour opted to use the ADT Championship format?
For those unfamiliar, the ADT Championship is an LPGA event not being played this year, but has a very innovative format. 32 players play 36 holes to get to a low 16 players, with sudden death playoffs if needed. Then, a 54 hole cut is made to the top 8 players in aggregate score. Then, the final round is an eight player free-for-all for the million dollar first prize.
Given the 30 players at the Tour Championship, here's how it would have all played out if they used the LPGA's format. (Their payout is determined using 2008 figures.)
- Phil Mickelson 65 - $10,000,000
- Sean O'Hair 69 - $3,000,000
- Steve Stricker 69 - $2,000,000
- Padraig Harrington
69 - $1,500,000
- Tiger Woods 70 - $1,000,000
- Steve Marino 71 - $750,000
- Ernie Els 71 - $750,000
- Kenny Perry 74 - $600,000
In other words, Woods would have lost $9 million in this format.

That’s a conclusion you can only draw on paper. When you change the format – you change the mindset of the players involved – but it’s still an interesting format.

Interesting Idea
It certainly would give it a true playoff feel and maybe some buzz going against a full football weekend.
