FedExCup Win is Pyrrhic Victory for Tiger Woods

The final putt of Tiger Woods' last round in the Tour Championship yesterday was devoid of emotion.  It was a nice up-and-down for par following a poor tee shot.  It was the proper conclusion to the day for Woods, who shot an even par round of 70 and finished in second place to Phil Mickelson.

Initially, fans probably thought that Sunday would become a showdown between Woods and Kenny Perry, who insisted that Woods bring his A game to East Lake for the deciding round.  After an early surge, though, Perry sputtered out rather quickly.  He was nothing more than a sympathy character on Sunday.

For a time, it appeared that Woods could lose on two fronts.  With Mickelson having had the tournament in tow early on in the back nine, the only question remaining was that of the FedExCup.  At the sixteenth tee, Steve Stricker had a temporary lead over Woods for the $10 million prize.  Consecutive bogeys on 16 and 17, though, dashed his chances to play spoiler and make Woods a loser twice over on Sunday.

In the end, Woods was able to watch Phil MIckelson lock up the Tour Championship in the group in front of him.  For his part, Lefty was not much more expressive about the win and the $1.35 million first place prize than Woods was about winning $10 million and the FedExCup.

Perhaps it was Mickelson's indignation that he could perform so well over the final three days of the tournament and still come up nearly $7 million short of Woods' bounty for the week.  Yes, Mickelson surged from 14th to 2nd in the FedExCup - netting $3 million in bonus money - but it may have wrung hollow.

He told NBC Sports' Mark Rolfing, "I want to see if I understand this right. I shot 65 and Tiger shot 70. He gets a check for $10 million."

The not-so-veiled shot at Tim Finchem and the FedExCup aside, Mickelson has other things on his mind than winning golf tournaments.  He can appear vapid until 2010.

For Woods, though, he is the only person that can make winning $10 million look like he barely won a Cheese Whiz sandwich in the clubhouse.  Understandably, Woods is frustrated that he didn't win the golf tournament.  But the least he could do for the middle-class fan is look kind of happy to win the FedExCup.  Everyone knows he is a billionaire and needs the money like Rod Blagojevich needs another 15 minutes of fame, but throw the people a bone.

It was clear, though, that Woods wanted the parlay - a win at East Lake and the FedExCup, and in that order.  The FedExCup may turn out to be Woods' second, but it may be one of the few times in his career that he felt like a loser while being the winner.

The Tour Championship turned out to be a Pyrrhic victory for Tiger.  Sure, he may have won a boatload of money to float on East Lake, but now Phil Mickelson has apparently returned prepared to keep Tiger's majorless mini-slump going.

Sigh…Tiger’s par put was “devoid of emotion” because he missed 2 putts inside of 5 feet on Friday for eagle (15) and birdie (16). Then he missed putts coming down the stretch on Sunday. You’re doing an old Three Stooges bit – looking for a quarter you dropped in the other room because this one has light.

Tiger wrapped up the $10 million by the 13th hole on Sunday. He lost the Tour Championship by missing fairways, then making bad approach shots leaving him impossible birdie putts and chips. He was done when he missed birdie at 17.

Last week, Shacklford tried to prove a point from a Steve Elling question that Tiger could have skipped the first three rounds and finished 3rd – that he didn’t need to finish 1st before East Lake. WRONG. If Tiger had come in seeded 3rd, then finished the way he did, he wouldn’t have won the FEC. Tiger knew exactly what and where he needed to be to win the big check…and that’s what professionals do – they play for the big check. Yes, he wanted to win the tournament – he always does – but top priority was the FEC check.

And how about MIckelson ? What a round !! The putter came to life – he hit some fairways (though the par at 5 from the rough on 1 was incredible).

There is no “indignation” – Mickelson knew where he stood and knew that he needed a lot of help to win both checks. He did his job.

He also knew that this wasn’t a “last day” thing…or a “last week” thing. This is a season long points chase – and Phil had other things on his mind for most of that year. He didn’t perform well enough to get seeded high enough at East Lake to have his destiny in his own hands.

His comments to Rolfing were said in humor – not indignation. There is a difference in taking a shot and giving the needle.

I think you said it best about Tiger feeling like the loser when he was the winner – and you’re right – he wanted both. It doesn’t look right and it doesn’t feel right to lose the last tournament, yet win the big prize.

Sunday was a VERY exciting day of golf – it just eneded a hole too early. Luckily, it was Tiger Woods coming in at 18 and not Kenny Perry, otherwise, NBC might have held the Tour Champion’s ceremony on 18 while Perry was hitting in, and NBC left the air for the Sunday news.

I’m pretty sure that Lefty meant every word of what he said to Rolfing. He’s just really good at making it seem funny. But Finchem got the message.

Still, that was a very good day of golf and I’m glad to see Mickelson reintroduced as Woods’ foil.

Don’t forget…Finchem doesn’t care as long as people are talking about the PGA Tour. :-)

"Pyrrhic"..?? Isn't that the word

that got Howard Stern slapped by Heather Locklear and fined $25m from FCC?

Good question, though. Given Tiger’s disdain for the FedEx concept, he may have rather been in the mix with Phil going down the stretch. He had chances to win that tournament and never capitalized. However, with his earnings during the past 35 days should make a few mortgage and yacht payments.

That’s my thing. He just won a boatload (literally) of money. At least throw me a bone and act like that’s kind of cool.
