Part of me wants to deem network news as anachronistic and irrelevant, but on the other hand I realize that Katie Couric’s last place news triples the best ratings of the highest cable news outlet.
Me, I watch none of the above. The closest I come to watching a news broadcast any more is Deutsche Welle, NHK or Canal, and that’s mainly to refresh language skills. That and the fact that neither have a jingoistic America-only point of view when they cover world news. And yes, I know that they have their biases, but what is interesting are the things they report on that never see the light of day here.
As for golf coverage, go no further than watching Ben Wright or Peter Allis’s coverage. Both were dry and quite humorous at times, and both knew when the heck to just shut up and let the action speak for itself. Typically, modern announcers consider themselves to be like radio guys where they have to explain each and every moment to an audience they apparently consider incapable of comprehending for themselves.
