Condi Rice Joins Infamous Shoal Creek GC
Remember a few months ago when Jaime Diaz wondered if Condi Rice would soon become the first female member at Augusta National? Well, that may still happen someday, but we have other news filed under "What golf club will Condi Rice join?"
The AP reports that Condi Rice has joined two clubs in Birmingham, Alabama: Greystone G&CC and Shoal Creek CC.
If you'll remember, Shoal Creek came under serious fire as it was preparing to host the 1990 PGA Championship because it had no black members at the time. Hall W. Thompson, the club's founder, was quoted before the Birmingham paper saying that his club wouldn't be "pressured into accepting" a black member.
Nine days before the PGA Championship was televised with $2 million less in ad revenue from withdrawing sponsors, Shoal Creek offered an honorary membership to a black man.
Since that time, Shoal Creek hosted last year's US Junior Amateur - it's first major championship event since 1990.

if it was infamous – Rice wouldn’t be a member. things have changed. it used to be a private club that lived by its own rules, then decided the dollars from a professional tour event were worth more than their prejudicial rules.

It’s still infamous in the public’s view, but things have clearly changed. Thompson’s son is quoted in the piece saying that he wished they could put this behind them faster. And the USGA said that no club should get the death penalty. Should check it out – pretty good read.

like I said – the public doesn’t give Shoal Creek a thought anymore. still a great course – and they are getting a junior event.

I'm waiting for...
…her to be labeled a typical rich racist Republican for joining a club with a history of racism in these “post-racial” times. Oops, wait a sec…

I’ve actually got an interesting post coming about club memberships that I think you’ll really like. Should spark some good debate.

Interesting. I can’t wait. And I’m sure my comments will be highly predictable.
