I Sure Hope You Love The FedEx Cup Cause The LPGA Tour Is Next
Jon Show is doing some serious sleuthing at Sports Business Journal. He obtained a proposal for the ultimate in sponsorships - "ownership of the entire LPGA [Tour] season."
The structure sounds an awful lot like the FedEx Cup or its poorer cousin, The Race to Dubai.
[T]he sponsorship provides "ownership of the entire LPGA season" through a seasonlong competition that either awards a bonus prize or ends with a championship tournament sponsored by the same company.
[T]he sponsorship could cover the entire season or a smaller number of events, depending upon the wishes of the prospective sponsor. Players would qualify for the bonus or tournament by earning points, or finishing in certain positions, in series events.
Given that the ADT Championship is the most ingenious format for a golf playoff out there, I'm hoping that the LPGA Tour wouldn't screw something like this up for everyone. Unfortunately, though, the LPGA - which now owns the defunct former ADT - wants to have that format be the first event of the year. There's almost no way that the Tour would dip into the ADT well (for lack of a better term) twice in a season.
And, no, there will not be a foxy boxing match to determine the season champion of the LPGA Tour.

I must say that the “poorer cousin, the Race to Dubai” is a masterstroke of punnery. Very well played, Mr. Ballangee.
