The LPGA Is So Boring and Forgettable This Year.
Golfweek writer Jim McCabe and someone else that escapes me right now are so right. I mean instead of having one player dominate every week and run away with the money title and Player of the Year awards, fans of ladies' professional golf are having to put up with:
- Two major Championships decided on the final hole by a birdie or eagle.
- Tournaments in Singapore and Corning won by final hole birdies from top five ranked golfers in the world.
- Tournaments, like this weekend's Safeway, that had six or more golfers (Pettersen, Redman, Hur, Miyazato, C. Kim, Nordqvist, S.H. Lee) with a piece of the lead on Sunday before being decided in sudden death.
- Veterans showing they still have game by winning tournaments, e.g., Pat Hurst, Karrie Webb.
- A top foreign player - Ai Miyazato - getting her long overdue first tour victory.
- The maturing of Michelle Wie, as seen at the Solheim Cup matches.
- A closely fought Solheim Cup match.
Oh, and the last thing that makes the 2009 LPGA season so boring and forgettable: The Player of the Year award and #1 on the money list have at least 4 golfers shooting for them at the end of August.
This is boring?! No. The guy at Golfweek , the other person, and anyone else who passes this pathetic memo around need to go see a proctologist. Why? To get their heads out of their arse where it has to be so firmly planted. That's the only way they can be so blind to how exciting the LPGA has been in 2009 on the fairways.

Bill, do you have some linkage for the Golfweek writer to be named and Sal?

Your wish is my command
I updated the post to include a link to Jim McCabe’s post at Golfweek. The second article I forget who said this year was boring. I thought it was Sal Johnson but I couldn’t find it over at Golf observer. Did Dave Seanor write about the Solheim or LPGA recently?

It's someone who I
sometimes pay attention to. Sal? Seanor? Bohannan? Reason? Shackelford? One of Golf World’s hacks writers not named Ron Sirak. If Sirak had said it I wouldn’t have forgotten!
Whomever, they were lamenting the absence of Annika(who hasn’t been very annikaish since late 2006) and no dominating player , that these have made the LPGA dull, boring, or a similar adjective. Which is pathetic when you look closely at how the 2009 LPGA season has turned out to be.

Ochoa was dominating very nicely for a brief time, but it seems these days that she’s very distracted or simply that her mind is not there.

Charisma doesn't correlate
Obviously I can’t disagree with any of the points you made — very accurate and intriguing, by the way — but I think one reason why writers like McCabe and others in the golf media could care less about what’s happened on the LPGA Tour this season is that the most charismatic players on Tour have done very little. Paula Creamer? Eight top-10 finishes, but no wins and a horrific third round at the U.S. Women’s Open. Morgan Pressel? Only two top-10 finishes. Natalie Gulbis? Just like Pressel, only two top-10 finishes, but unlike Pressel she hasn’t come close to winning a tournament (Pressel lost a playoff at the Jamie Farr). Lorena Ochoa? Motherhood takes priority, so 2009 has wound up being the worst seasons of her career.
And it’s hurt the Tour that no American has risen up as a truly dominant player — parity isn’t a bad thing, but it can hinder public interest when those succeeding don’t have a uniform level of notoriety. Just because Cristie Kerr is No. 1 on the money list, at this point her 2009 campaign is more notable for two majors she should have won, the Kraft and the U.S. Women’s Open. Angela Stanford looked ready for a big year after beating Wie in Hawaii but hasn’t won since. Brittany Lincicome hasn’t really capitalized since winning the Kraft. If these players make bigger names for themselves, then that will help the Tour and make the 2009 season more memorable.
Plus, I know what would really help — if Michelle Wie finally won! Unfortunately, she won’t have a chance to do so at the Samsung World Championship: http://www.southlandgolfmagazine.com/t-News_Michelle_Wie_Absent_Samsung_World_Championship0909.aspx
