Fare Thee Well, Juli Inkster?
This week, Juli Inkster found out that she was getting a sponsor exemption into the hyper exclusive, 20 player Samsung World Championship.
The Constructivist wonders if Juli Inkster may well be signaling that not only was this year her last Solheim Cup, but her last year period.
It wouldn't take much to argue she doesn't deserve this and didn't deserve the last captain's pick for the Solheim Cup, at least based on her play the last 2 seasons. But in terms of honoring her place in golf history, both are exactly the right call. I can't see Daniel and Samsung doing what they did unless they, too, have the same feeling as me.
Totally agree. Inkster knew immediately after her match with Gwladys Nocera that this was it for her. I think she knows the same about her LPGA Tour career.

Juli Inkster’s picture is beside the word “class” in the dictionary. She plays with it and she will leave with it. That in mind, I think she may retire, sans fare the well tour, and enjoy the fruits of her fine career.

Juli Simpson has been on my
golf radar since winning three consecutive women’s amateurs in the early 1980’s. When I use Charles’ dictionary, also next to her picture are competitor, spouse and mother – all first class.
She is not qualified to be the LPGA commissioner, but if I were the commissioner, she would be on my staff…

to quote a few great Monty Python characters…“I’m not dead yet.” Let’s not roll Inkster into retirement just yet. I agree with you guys – she doesn’t seem like the type to hang around if she can’t compete – but greats like Cathy Whitworth, JoAnne Carner, and Nancy Lopez played well past their prime to support the Tour.

I believe we’ll see Juli occasionally after this season (next year’s KNC and a couple more events plus one or two the next few years) but I feel certain her days of playing 18-20 times a year are over.

Fare well
There are few people in ANY sport that can be named who have brought more grit, competitive fire and drive to the game they play than Juli. Couple that with pure class, an unabashed appreciation for everything she has earned, a true love of the fans, and an awesome record and you may never find her equal in any sport in the world. I have had the privilege of playing with her in two pro-ams in her career. Let me tell you she is oen of the finest people I have ever had the privilege of sharing the links with. She DID deserve to be the second Captain’s Pick for the Solheim cup because of what she brought to the team. WRT the Samsung, I will be in attendance and watching her closely. Last year in the Samsung, on the 16th green, playing with Lorena Ochoa, Juli drained a 25’ birdie putt right after Lorena had done the same thing. They walked off the green to tumultuous cheers, laughing with each other in the sheer joy of the game and the competition.
The day that she retires will be one of the saddest for the LPGA and for fans of great champions everywhere.
