Liberty National: Down in the Dumps
After Phil Mickelson hit his approach to 18 green in another one of those preposterous collection areas at Liberty National, Nick Faldo said:
Aww, he'll be down in the dumps about that one.
Totally deadpan. It was awesome. Kelly Tilghman could not have tried to move on faster.

Those Brits are
really punny people, especially Sir Nick of Faldo…
...from the land of pleasant living, Baltimore.

LOL !!! I love cheesy jokes like that. Give Faldo credit – he has to sit next to Tilghman all day – sometimes you just crack and do whatever it takes to amuse yourself or you go crazy. :-)

Didn’t Sir Nick date Ms. Tilghman for quite some time?

no – Tilghman doesn’t date…umm…the other team

I love Faldo on commentary. I like him a lot better than Lanny Wadkins when he was in the CBS booth.

lol – as nice a guy as Lanny Wadkins is – he was pretty bad in the booth. I play poker with a couple of guys who have the Wadkins voice down along with some of his favorite lines. the game usually has to stop for all the laughing.

I liked it yesterday when he said that the computerized on-screen putting lines were visible to the pros “if they squinted a bit.”

“one of those preposterous collection areas”
Ever played the Old Course, Ryan?

the collections areas at LN he is talking about take the ball off the green and up against the rough. collection areas aren’t supposed to do that. at the old course, the collection areas take the ball down into a bowl area – not against rough.

I have no problem with the Old Course’s. Court pretty much covered my gripe.

Faldo Humour
He was totally deadpan because he had no idea of alternative meanings. He’s really not very bright – his Ryder Cup opening speech proved that. Bloody good golfer in his day of course.

wow – if Faldo isn’t very bright…what does that say for Kelly Tilghman ? Or Johnny Miller ?
Faldo may not be a Rhode’s Scholar, but he’s no dunce. He shows respect to the players by not insulting them after a bad shot. He knows they didn’t intend to hit the ball in the water…unlike Johnny Miller. Just because someone doesn’t give a Gettysburg address speech doesn’t make him dumb. (and don’t get me started in the other direction)
You don’t get to be the best golfer on the planet with no intelligence. The man knows golf – and he has a pretty quick wit about him. Maybe not classic satire or Robin Williams – but I’ll take Faldo over the rest 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Golf commentary is often more about what you DON’T say.
At that, Peter Alliss and Ben Wright were two of the best. When they did say something after an untoward shot, it was usually so dry you almost had to laugh.

OH – I could only hope…let’s see…I have SO many things these “professionals” could not say. :-)
It only took Tilghman one sentence at the opening of today’s broadcast to say something stupid – “TIGER WOODS IS MAKING HIS MOVE !!!!!!!!!” (in her most manly voice, of course) They showed him hitting one shot – but he was even par through 8 holes. Five minutes later, he rolled in the birdie – but her definition of “making a move” is that the rest of the field is shooting 3 shots higher than yesterday.

Making a move today is just shooting even par. It’s sad.

Yeah. I know its because of the horrid conditions, but I can’t help but get frustrated when guys can’t shoot a decent/consistent round after they post a good score.
Also, pgatour.com has the same problem because their front page makes it seem Tiger is charging up the leaderboard/in the top 5, but really he’s tied for 11th.

Commentators
CG – I wasn’t comparing Faldo to either Tilghman or Miller – I do rate him more highly than either of them, although for most tournaments UK TV has completely different commentators anyway (like Peter Allis). I do stand by my comment that he is not terribly bright however, (that’s not the same as “no intelligence” is it?) and there is a helluva difference between a Gettysburg address and an opening speech which had players (his own) and the audience cringing in embarrassment. I just don’t believe that the connotation of “dump/Liberty National” was in his mind when he made his comment about Phil Mickelson. I actually quite like Faldo’s commentary when he is being serious, but like his contrived schoolboy jokes/“wasn’t I wonderful” comments somewhat less.
