In Defense of Christina Kim's Rebel Rousing
In case you haven't noticed, there has been quite a bit of reaction in the press and in the blogosphere about the kind of celebrating and showboating that the Americans did during the Solheim Cup. While some it centered around the incessant Hustle butt bumping (Is this the 70s?! Do the Mackarena for crying out loud!), a lot of it was focused on Christina Kim's celebrating.
Check out the thoughts from John Huggan, Mark Reason, Fanhouse (on a separate note: please, Greg Couch, just stop), Golf Digest's Local Knowledge, Stephanie Wei, the SI Golf Group, and the banter at Geoff Shackelford's joint for a taste of what others are saying.
Here's my thought on it. Not to rip off of Rich Lerner, but golf needs more people like Christina Kim. She is like the female Tommy Bolt for this generation. Kim is engaging, has a potty mouth, and tells some awesome stories. My round caddying for her in a pro-am in like '03 was one of the best experiences that I have ever had playing golf. It is difficult not to like someone that charismatic as a playing partner or watching.
It's not like she or any other American pulled a Terrell Owens after each holed putt. No Sharpie ball signings. No signing of the television cameras. No snow angels on the green after dropping a bomb for birdie.
Kim didn't ride her driver down the fairway like Boo Weekley did at last year's Ryder Cup - a tribute to Happy Gilmore that I loved. She did a lot of fist pumps, shouted to the crowd to get them going, and danced a lot. Isn't that the kind of thing that critics say is missing from the game?
So many modern professional golfers are stiffs on the course, resigned to show as little outward emotion as possible because they think it may miff their mojo. Mojo is psychological. Crowd pleasing is part of entertainment. And in case you haven't been reading the headlines about the LPGA Tour on your local business page, the LPGA Tour is in need of some serious entertainers that can both play golf and play up a crowd. Christina Kim can do that.
I am fairly certain that Kim's style brought out some of the best of Michelle Wie. For as much as the angle about Wie's parents being banned from clubhouses and team meetings is overblown, Christina Kim's influence on Michelle is clearly positive. It helped her become more expressive and appreciative of the nationalistic adulation going on around her. If this event turns out to be the springboard for Wie's personal career - as I suggest great caution about predicting that - then no one will remember the kind of influence that Kim and Wie's other compatriots had on her lifting an enormous burden off of her shoulders. 3-0-1. And some of that came because of the positive emotion coming out of her friend.
Should any player be jacked up when 6 down in a match? Probably not, but a comeback has to start somewhere. Tiger jumped around several US Amateur venues when he made his match play comebacks during his six year run in the US Junior and US Amateur events. Fist pumps, shouting, cheering to pump himself up. And we laud him as such a competitor even if the fist pumps are seemingly equally balanced out with f-bombs. If it is ok for him to do it, it's ok for Christina Kim to do it.
Kim reminds me a lot of JJ Redick. In my time at Maryland, I booed that guy more than anyone I have ever booed. 17,000 of my fellow Maryland students and I chanted "F*%$ you, JJ!" at him several times when he made the trip to College Park. We hated that guy. Why? Because he was so smug and he knew he was good. But, even worse, we hate (and still hate) him because he was damn good. Christina is damn good. She went 3-1-0. It's not like she didn't back up the celebrations by losing. She won.
And to the victor goes the spoils.

Please please PLEASE ! Don’t EVER insult yourself by comparing yourself to Rich Lerner. You have too much fun with the game and have never come across as arrogant or condescending. :-)
CK is a blast – sometimes she gets a little carried away – but she is rarely disrepsectful to her opponents – though it could be argued that in the Solheim Cup, her constant cheerleading could be a distraction to other matches on the course with sudden outbursts. But what the heck – if Alison Nicholas doesn’t complain about anything other than an area not marked as ground under repair – there were no serious complaints. The Euros were having a blast in the galleries – singing and cheering.

Why is it every time the US wins on American soil in a Ryder Cup or a Solheim Cup, something comes up about what poor sports we all are?
Cheering is part of international golf competition. Playing to the crowds is part of it too. CK was respectful while her opponents were preparing to hit the golf ball, and that’s really all she owed the European squad.

I was thinking about putting a line to say that Kim is the quintessential American, but that would totally open it up for people to call Americans boorish, cocky, etc.

Is she American
The same writer who complained about Kim’s nationalism was the same one to put her(Remember she was one of those golfers with a Korean Dad) in another country’s grouping that is supposedly ruining the tour. Is it all right if I ask Mark Reason in a post if the considers Kim, Korean, American or both?
You can’t argue with me that Mark Reason’s logic varies from column to column. Or even paragraph to paragraph.

I dunno...
…I felt a bit awkward at times watching it because it felt a bit like playing to the cameras as much as the crowds.
At the same time I felt like it was fun to watch.
And then again I didn’t see the Euros demonstrating anywhere near the same umm…flailing about ;).
So…I’ll just blame the media.

A change...
I personally had fun watching the Solheim Cup. It was a much needed break from the seriousness and stoicism of regular golf tourneys. Also, it is a BIG thing to be representing your country in any sport. If I am good enough at anything to get an opportunity to be part of Team USA, I’m sure I will be running on pure adrenalin as well and be as hyper (or even more) as CK. Bottom line is she backed it up with her talent. She played awesome golf at Sugar Grove and thats what counts.
Cheers!

I don’t know if I was watching a different broadcast then some of these people, but I’m pretty sure Christina Kim wasn’t the only person pumping up the crowd. I think nearly everyone on the U.S. team would “raise the roof” or tell the crowd to come on throughout the weekend. Kerr, McPherson, really all of them.
Christina is, if nothing else, genuine. If I was going to point out anything it would be Elosegui’s mimic of one of Christina’s celebrations (pointing the #1 after sinking a putt) is a bit unsportmanlike.. That’s not genuine, that’s premeditated, but in any nation vs. nation format this only makes me more excited to see the passion!
It really makes me wish that the golf format proposed for the Olympics was a team format, rather then another stroke play event.

Don't judge CK strictly by the Solheim Cup...
…she gets WAY over the top for this team event. She gets excited and mad and loud during regular tour events – but she gets really cranked up for this team event – the girl likes to party.
Remember, too, that she was broken hearted when she didn’t make the team 2 years ago – she knew she didn’t deserve a spot by her play – but it hurt all the same.
Personally, I would like to see a LITTLE more decorum – but the same thing gets said for the Euros who yell, sing and get drunk on their own soil to the point of being obnoxious – but they do have fun with it.

"Rebel" Rousing?
A rebellion against whom? The word you really wanted is “Rabble” (def: disorderly crowd) not Rebel"

I would agree if she was inciting people to rebellion. Clearly, that wasn’t her intent.

Who says Christina wasn't inciting a rebellion
For fans to ditch the notion that golfers of Korean blood have no personality……………..
