2009 Has Been Rough for the PGA Tour's Pretty Boys
Just a couple of seasons ago, Sergio Garcia appeared to be surging toward a major championship. Having beaten Paul Goydos in a playoff to win the Players Championship, Garcia had secured his most significant win in his career. Since then, though, Garcia has done nothing to validate that win.
In fact, perhaps his play has validated his break up with Greg Norman's daughter, Morgan Leigh. This season, Garcia just has one top ten finish on the PGA Tour, which came in the US Open. It is almost as though the playoff loss to fellow pretty boy Camilo Villegas sent him into some kind of downward spiral from which his life has never recovered.
Flash forward (not to the ABC show), but to this weekend in Greensboro, NC. At the start of the week, Garcia was ranked 115th in the FedEx Cup standings - barely in next week's opener at The Barclays. Sergio Garcia positions himself atop the leaderboard entering the final round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield CC. Then, he wets the bed.
Today, he shoots even par 70 in the final round. Garcia had opened up a two shot lead part way through the final round. Then, he hit the the 8th hole and made bogey. Three holes later, made consecutive bogeys. He had lost the lead for good amidst Jason Bohn, Ryan Moore, and Kevin Stadler - all playing great rounds. Eventually, Ryan Moore won on the third hole of the playoff.
The thing is: this year has not just been a poor year for Sergio Garcia. It has been a horrible year for all of the pretty boys on Tour.
Adam Scott cannot find the happy side of 80. He has litany excuses, including losing his long time girlfriend, whiffing with Kate Hudson, and embarking on swing changes that clearly are not gluing together.
Interestingly enough, we have not heard much from the man that beat Garcia in the playoff at The Tour Championship last year. Camilo Villegas - after having won his first two Tour events in consecutive weeks - has not been heard from this year either. Following a couple of top five finishes at Torrey Pines at Doral early this year, he has not sniffed the top ten since. The closest is a tie for thirteenth at the Masters.
These three guys were doing so well last year. It was arguably each of their best seasons to date. And now...well, at least they're still good looking.

Sergio was whingeing about losing his girlfriend for a while too.
GTFOI Sergio. You are a young man and relationships come and go. And a guy like you has more access to interesting, accomplished and incredibly attractive women than most anyone.
Then again, maybe the ladies dumped these guys because they are whining Gamma Males.

While you were writing this
Garcia, Scott, and Villegas caught the eye of 742 women that are unspeakably attractive and who would never collectively give us a second glance.

Having once had a nice career in the glamor photo game working with professional models on paid assignments, I’ve gotten to know plenty of unspeakably attractive women that might not have given me a second glace.
The funny thing is that more of them than you think would complain about their inability to meet a decent guy.
The other funny thing is that at the end of the day night, they are just people like the rest of us.

unfortunately – their definition of a “decent guy” has to come in a stud body with Bill Gates bank account. (lol)

Not necessarily so…and I am sure you have seen plenty of guys who have hooked up well above their pay grade.
I know I did.

yep – the guys with the bank accounts. :-)
I’m just kidding…ok…jealous ! (lol) A lot of these women just want to be treated like regular people.

EXACTLY.
I know this for fact, so believe me tomorrow, yesterday or right now, younger fellows. A woman worth knowing — no matter how stunningly beautiful — wants to be treated special because she is WHO she is, not what WHAT she is. Yes, nearly all women want to be thought of us a “pretty” — much the same way you would like to think of yourself as attractive to them.
I remember once a drop-dead, extremely cool former and future Playboy model I did a few shoots with complaining about how she couldn’t meet a decent guy. It was extremely inappropriate for me to offer myself while we were working together, but boy howdy when she and her friends showed up together at a party a few months later, all bets were off. I liked her because she was a tall glass of cool water on a hot summer’s night.

You can’t get these kinds of life lessons at any other golf blog.
OMP, I’d like you to start a column on this!

Great sentence.
I liked her because she was a tall glass of cool water on a hot summer’s night.
That’s awesome. 100% awesome.

So – the next question is – no matter how much she SAYS she wants to be treated like anybody else – can she really get by without all the perks beautiful people, especially women, get in life ? I have met a number of stunning women who work hard and make a good living – yet they expect…some demand…that men give them everything. They have never bought a drink in a club or bar…never bought dinner…have men who buy them clothes and trips… Then they have the audacity to tell me they want a regular guy and to be treated like a regular girl – when they don’t know how a “regular girl” lives.
A girl I went to high school with STILL tells me the same thing. She was one of the models for the opening introduction to the CBS Mystery Theater back in the day. Did a lot of modelling and TV work. She has married to two very rich men and lives a very lavish life…and thinks that is “normal”. (she and her implants get teased a lot over that line) She is VERY nice and a great friend – but doesn’t know what “normal” is.
Just one of those things you have to find out when you get to know people – but not as a stereotype.

All I'm saying is
how rough of a 2009 can it be for them?
