USA Wins 11th Solheim Cup

Morgan Pressel's victory on the 16th hole to go over LPGA Champion Anna Nordqvist 3&2 provided the assurance of the USA retaining the Solheim Cup.  Christina Kim's victory on the final hole against Spain's Tania Elosegui secured an American win in the 11th Solheim Cup at Rich Harvest Farms.

There were a lot of fantastic performances on Sunday by both sides.  The match of the day has to go to Michelle Wie, though.  Wie was locked in a great battle with Swede Helen Alfreddson in what was expected to be a pivotal match.  Both Wie and Alfreddson settled their match with great shots, not hiccups.  Ultimately, Wie's 3 Up lead was eventually reduced to All Square, but Wie then took the lead for good.  Her second shot to the par 5 18th set up the match victory.

The turning points of the matches, though, really were in unexpected places.  49 year old Juli Inkster, in what is her final Solheim Cup, turned around a match against Gwadys Nocera.  Two down after thirteen holes, Inkster rallied to win 14, 16, and 17.  Ultimately, she lost the 18th hole to Nocera, but for the match to go from losing a point to gaining one-half point was huge.

The same thing happened in the match between Laura Davies and Brittany Lang.  Davies was dominating the match through 10 holes - was 3 Up.  As time passed on the back nine, Davies' lead eroded to a 1 Up lead on 18 for the Euros.  After Davies pumped her second shot at the last into the hazard, Lang was able to secure another crucial half point.

Those were the turning points in this Solheim Cup.  The more talented American team made good work of the opponents they were supposed to beat.  Paula Creamer set the pace with a 3 Up win over Suzann Pettersen.  Angela Stanford bested Becky Brewerton by a 5&4 margin.  Brittany Lincicome took care of Sophie Gustafson.

Now, the United States is 8-3 all time in the matches and is yet to lose on American soil.

To the Europeans' credit, they made the matches much closer than was anticipated.  Forging out a tie in the team format was quite an achievement for a team that was expected to get waxed by these Americans.  Though they ultimately were beaten - as expected - the Europeans made a great showing for themselves.  The result may not turn out to look as close as it actually was, but make no mistake that this Solheim Cup likely preserved its format because of what Alison Nicholas' squad achieved this week.

Gwladys Nocera

Despite her faltering down the stretch against HOF Juli Inkster, Gwladys Nocera really did well this week.

I think this is a great for her, for a player who has taken a lot of grief for faltering at the Evian and WBO year after year, she’s shown why she’s been so great on the LET all these years.

Getting some background on her story (turning pro at an older age, forgoing her senior year golf season to work and make money), made me really like her too. It’s a pity she couldn’t pull out the win today, but at the same time I can’t be mad at Juli doing what she did in her last Solheim!

Nocera played great throughout the week. She just had a bad three or four hole stretch. Good to see her, Brewerton, and Elosegui play so well.

Since the LPGA needs some money, it might make sense to go a Presidents Cup-type format in the years where the Solheim Cup is not being played. This makes more sense as it would involve the LPGA’s Korean players, Lorena Ochoa, and Karrie Webb. I think you could more easily get sponsorship for the event and some publicity if you had some of the higher ranked players on tour meeting each other in a Cup event of that magnitude.

Been a Reds fan since 1996 and am desperate for a playoff run.

There were a lot of questions about how close the Euros would be able to keep things – I think they did an excellent job. The future of the Solheim Cup looks pretty solid to me.

The only thing I didn’t care for was the over the top, “I wanna be like Paul Azinger” cheerleading. You can’t muzzle a Christina Kim (at least not without losing a few fingers in the attempt) – but fist pumping on 2 foot putts ? The gallery knows who made the putts, you don’t have to wave your arms after every shot.

I agree that the first pump for a two foot putt to win the hole was a bit much, but anything outside of 10 feet was ok by me.

Just depends on the situation – a little pump on a 10 footer is one thing, but all the jumping up and down and arm waving was a bit much. Have little dignity. Beating an opponent is one thing – but show some class.

Yeah, I’m in agreement with you there. There is a line, but I’d prefer overcelebrations as compared to too much of Tiger Woods’ club slamming and cursing and stuff.

umm – I’ve never seen anybody curse or slam a club when they make a putt to win a hole.

You’re totally missing the point, so let me rephrase: what is more annoying – too much celebrating or too much groveling?

I know what you were saying – but the swearing and club throwing is pretty rare compared to the jumping up and down after hitting the green with a wedge and fist pumping for a tap in par…although Cristie Kerr let loose on a couple of bad shots. :-)

Ryan, do you have any idea what TV ratings look like for the Solheim? I think Golf Channel did a decent job, but I had the advantage of being able to fast-forward through Lerner’s commentaries. What I have trouble with is the poor quality advertisers during the tournament. What sound-minded person would fall for paying $30.00 per week forever for a $250.00 computer? Couldn’t they come up with something more audience appropriate?

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

I don’t have numbers for Solheim yet, but I’m betting they’ll be out in the next day or so.

I think GC did an ok job, but some of the stuff was just awful. And the advertising segment was very lousy.
