Tiger Woods To Play The Barclays, But Why?
It has been confirmed by a press release from the PGA Tour this morning that Tiger Woods will play in The Barclays next week at Liberty National CC just outside of New York City. Hoorah!
The question, though, is why he is playing. Tiger skipped the event in 2007 at Westchester because he just does not like the course. (Why he missed last year is obvious.) This year, at a new course - for one year only - Tiger decides to commit.
Does it have anything to do with the defeat to YE Yang at the PGA Championship? After all, Tiger has secured his first majorless year since 2004. Perhaps winning his second of three possible FedEx Cup titles is enough to keep him interested for another month.
Maybe it is just Tiger showing some allegiance to the PGA Tour during these tough times, a la his entry into the final Buick Open at Warwick Hills.
Either way, this may be the last time that The Barclays is even a part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Playing Commissioner Woods has asked Non-Playing Commissioner Finchem to reduce the number of playoff events to three. No more, no less.

Only one reason for him to play all 4 tournaments – he is still working on getting his mental game sharp. He can’t be happy the way he played the weekend at Hazeltine – absolutely no aggression – and now there might be guys thinking they can make a move on Tiger after Yang’s win.

I think Tiger wants to get out there and get some reps in and show that he is still Tiger.
It will be interesting to see if he plays with some new-found aggression this weekend. Maybe bringing out his driver more often and playing some bomb and gouge would be a good way to vent some frustration.
Or may Charlie is a colicky baby who cries all night and he just wants some peace and quiet.
Keep in mind that young men want wine, women and song…and married men want peace and *@$ing quiet.

I have a feeling that this is an ego trip by Tiger to try to prove he is dominant and the FedEx Cup is an easy outlet.

I think Tiger wants to smoke the playoffs to overcome the loss at the PGA. I do hope they don’t listen to Woods and keep the playoff events at 4. I enjoy the 4 playoff events and it lets a wider number of players participate, which makes the Wyndham interesting for golf fans. I guess if they only did 3 they could only have the top 100, but there might be arguments against it from the players committee because of shutting a few guys out of a paycheck.
Been a Reds fan since 1996 and am desperate for a playoff run.
