The Starter - 8/12 - It's Not About Length, It's How You Use It
In today's Starter, Ryan explores the record length on the Hazeltine scorecard for the PGA Championship. He talks about how that length is deceptive given where the length is on the course and the par of 72. He also compares the PGA of America's approach to that of the USGA at Bethpage back in June.

Good stuff RB. Adding this kind of length is done to try to make the course play the way it was originally designed. These guys today hit the ball so far off the tee that they are left with too many short irons into greens. These 480 to 540 yard par 4’s bring back the 3-4-5-6 iron shots that the designers intended for golfers to hit into the greens. And the 600+ yard par 5’s put pressure on attempts to reach the green in 2 and a premium on good layups and approach shots to make birdie.

I kind of prefer this kind of length. Make the par 5s a little more fair, but longer. Keep the par 4s at a reasonable length.

I like the long par 4’s – make these guys hit a 4 or 5 iron into a green instead of an 8 or 9.

Yeah, but you can do that with a dogleg that’s 450-470, not 515.

huh ? guess you missed these guys taking drivers and 3-woods over the corners then pulling out a 9 iron. To quote the great Roy Mcavoy “I’m not going left of those trees or right of those trees. I’m going OVER those trees…with a little draw.”
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
That’s going to happen if you make it easy to cut the dogleg. All depends on the teeing ground.
